An Old But Never Forgotten Curry Laksa @ Lum Kee, Medan Selera Section 14, PJ

January 8, 2014 | 7,423 views

Collage Lum Kee Section 14

Mostly Penang delights; Curry Laksa and Siam Laksa are two wise (and sumptuous) choices here at Lum Kee stall; manned by two elderly brothers

It’s not often that you see me writing about good street food in the Klang Valley these days. This could be due to a multitude of reasons; the most obvious being the absence of real, intense effort to venture all out for a decent food hunt after a day’s work (usually an energy-sapping routine), saving up the weekends for a splurge somewhere else instead (more often than not, back to my beloved hometown of Ipoh) or possibly due to the lack of information.

Or sheer lack of interesting spots worthy of a detour.

Don’t get me wrong. KL and Selangor when combined, have a good handful of gems deserving a nod. Real, delightful hawker food stalls that have stood the test of time. But these are either few and far in between, or closed down … giving way to commercialisation and dawn of the new era of cafes, burger bars and fine diners. Or wannabes.

Random Bits From Ipoh : Of Siam Laksa, Pork Chop & The Lost Energy

February 23, 2013 | 4,134 views

Siamese Laksa

Siam Laksa @ Restoran Ko Pi Tim (the name sounds like an overkill, really) in Medan Ipoh Bistari; aka the ‘Little Japan’ of Ipoh. Don’t ask why … just go and see for yourself.

Almost a week of disappearance. And no, I have not been traveling outstation, holidaying overseas or strapped to a chair and bombed to oblivion. The sheer barrage of workload and pending matters post-CNY (okay, technically speaking, it’s not even over yet. It’s Chap Goh Meh; the 15th day tomorrow!) got me hurling myself towards the monitor on a 24/7 basis.

Plus, no thanks to the crappy Internet speed lately, the frustration just kept building up to a crescendo of flames in my head.

Phew. And then there’s always light at the end of the tunnel. Or a shimmering glimmer of hope to feed the dire soul. Sunday’s always the best day to recharge and expel the accumulated toxins over the week.

Wantan Mee, Hakka Mee

Wantan Mee & Hakka Mee @ Ko Pi Tim

So here goes nothing. A story conjured up to feed the cravings. Wanted to write about the Lou Sang experience at Gao Ren Guan, New Paris and subsequently Le Meridien. Yet, the lure of reliving the pleasurable moments of digging into a slab of greasy pork chop from the hawker stall or a plate (yes, a plate) of Siam Laksa bursting with coconut milk is so much stronger.

Siamese Laksa @ Family Cafe, Ipoh

June 15, 2010 | 7,942 views

Siamese Laksa

Siamese Laksa @ Family Cafe in Ipoh (RM6.80/USD2)

Ever since the ‘demise’ of Sharon’s Laksa recently, I have been receiving comments, queries and mails asking about where to go for Siamese Laksa in Ipoh. Most suggestions point to this place, named Family Cafe situated in Taman Ipoh Permai, off the main road from Jusco Kinta City leading to Tambun of Ipoh.

I have tasted Family Cafe’s Siamese Laksa once (which is only available on weekends), before Sharon’s Laksa even came into the picture. Yes, I do agree that I prefer this type of richer, less sour and spicy, yet equally as satisfying bowl of laksa, than say, its counterpart the Assam Laksa, or Curry Laksa.

So how did this bowl of Siamese Laksa at Family Cafe fare? Read on ….. Read the rest of this entry »

Bee Home Cafe (Sharon’s Laksa) @ Ipoh

October 28, 2009 | 4,438 views

27 March 2010 – Sadly, this cafe has moved/relocated/closed. The premise is occupied by a Wan Stop Cafe now. I have no idea yet, on where Sharon’s Laksa has moved to, or are they still operating. Anyone?

4 June 2010 – Sharon’s Laksa is not operating from any premises. But you can contact her through this number : 012-518 5562 for small parties, catering services and such. She still cooks for such occasions.

Bee Home Cafe

Those with an exceptionally stellar memory would be able to recall my previous post on Sharon’s Laksa, inclusive of my constant rants with regards to the weekends-only Siam Laksa, and the other dishes I sampled way back before I even moved to my new domain here. (You can of course, choose to relive those good old days of viewing my blogposts against the black background HERE)

Pan Mee

Home Made Pan Mee (RM6.90) – Wednesdays Special

But of course, the feedbacks from the gluttons (or eager & hungry ones) who have paid this charming cafe a visit ranged from the positive/glowing ones to the not-so-favourable replies. But indeed, credits to be given where they’re due, Sharon’s Laksa had only been operating for a few months, hence QC (quality control) aspects may not be in check YET, but rest assured the lady boss herself (an affable Sharon Chin) is constantly on the prowl, doing check and balance while still whipping up a storm. The Siamese Laksa recipe belongs to her, by the way.

Food Fight – Clash of the Titans?

October 3, 2009 | 3,375 views

Chilli Crabs

From – Crabs for New Year in Pandan Indah, Kuala Lumpur

Back in our childhood days, we used to fight over petty matters. We would scramble for the last piece of candy, proclaiming war over trivial objects (pencil box fights, anyone?), and proudly claiming ‘patent’ over our very own, erm, creations (crayon-painted landscapes that reminded one of Picasso’s masterpieces?).

And to think that we all matured with time. Bah ….. The current fiasco surrounding the ‘Food Fight’ between two neighbouring countries had me sniggering no less, a strong reminder of our past when quarrels over who-owns-what was prominent.

Sharon’s Laksa – The BEST Siamese Laksa in Ipoh

July 9, 2009 | 2,733 views
Updated Sept 2010 – This outlet is closed now. Please be informed.
There’s a spanking NEW outlet in town, so rejoice fellow Ipohans (or Ipohites, whichever suits your fancy) !!! Recently opened for business, the proprietress was formerly with Kafe Happy Valley in Old Town of Ipoh. This outlet opened without much fanfare, so save for the residents of Ipoh Garden East, or those passing by on the way to Tambun, many would not have known of its existence.
The spacious al fresco dining area is a welcoming change, for a meal & the ensuing lounging session …..
Those baby-boomers of yesteryears, (aka antiques like me) would certainly agree that we did sworn by the extremely hip (and almost legendary) Antap Cafe in Ipoh Garden East, waaaayyyy back in the late 90’s.
