Saturday Morning Rants Over Roti Canai & Teh Tarik

May 31, 2014 | 7,496 views

Roti Canai Raju

The infamous roti canai from Raju @ Jalan Gasing – Still RM1.50/USD0.50 per piece; 3 years on. At least the price is sustained. This IS Raju after all. The chutneys here are good; with your thosai or roti or whatever else you’re having.

Happy Saturday dear readers. As May is drawing to a close, it suddenly dawns on me of how much had happened over the past 5 months. Tragedies in the headlines aside, several events affected my life adversely while some others elevated the credentials slightly (writing for Yahoo! Makanation & Malay Mail Online, filming for another food show), and yet the deluge of surprises did not end there.

Another life-changing moment beckons in slightly less than 2 months’ time. Remember this post in 2010? That was “Goodbye Ipoh” after 2.5 years of writing primarily about food from Ipoh and surrounding towns in Perak. Another 3.5 years later, Motormouth is making a tough decision to leave again. To where you ask? Read the rest of this entry »

The Sweeter Times – Kalai Oh Kalai!

November 4, 2010 | 3,372 views

A Big piece of Poori

The Giant Poori Face?

Pardon the lack of posts/passion/intensity/energy as of late. You would have realized that the writing’s not like my same witty self (hehe, self praise pulak) nor as punchy recently. Many things are happening in life now, and even during this moment when you’re pondering over this post sipping on a cup of teh tarik (Malaysian famous Indian-style pulled milk tea), Motormouth’s somewhere in the Klang Valley and adapting to situations. Or tribulations?

Banana Leaf Curry Rice

A complete set of ‘Banana Leaf’ Curry Rice @ Kalai Curry House in old town of Ipoh

Anyway, since tomorrow’s the Festival of Lights, or ‘Diwali/Deepavali’ as we know it, I would like to take this opportunity to wish all the Indian readers (and those celebrating the occasion, no matter you’re representing what faction/background) a very HAPPY DEEPAVALI! I initially planned to share a post on Buntong kacang putih (conversely speaking, the nuts ain’t white per se) but did not plan that this KL excursion would have taken me more than 3 days. So no pictures of the snacks. Yet.

But here’s a long delayed post I wanted to do on Kalai Curry House. Yup, used to be my absolute favourite place for South Indian cuisine in Ipoh (read my rave back then), but things started spiralling down during the last two visits. Read on to find out why …. Read the rest of this entry »

Lip-smacking Indian Fare @ Sri Ananda Bahwan, Old Town, Ipoh

November 19, 2009 | 11,309 views

Ananda Bahwan Staff

Remember this hunk of a model back then?

A summary of all the Ipoh food I have written before revealed the rather unflattering truth; I REALLY need to push on and write more on other cuisines, especially Malay food, and Indian food. The smattering of knowledge with regards to the existence (or the lack) of worthy Malay restaurants, ‘warung’, or even roadside shacks in and around Ipoh, renders my search for blog-worthy materials close to futile.

But thanks to the encouraging (notice I used the word ‘encouraging’, instead of aplenty) number of Indian colleagues and friends, I am slowly getting accustomed to the myriad of Indian cuisines in Ipoh, from the classy North Indian food, to the spicier and robust South Indian fare. Read all about the banana leaf escapades for a gastronomic journey of the most fiery kind.
