Let’s Talk About (The BEST) Chicken Rice Now …

December 20, 2010 | 13,512 views

50 Years of History

Satellite Restaurant Chicken Rice – As old school as it gets, Satellite has been retaining that alluring charm of mosaic-tiled floors, tables with scratched surfaces, plastic chairs, and a semi-al fresco dining area on the outside complete with coolers.

And according to a poll conducted by Friedchillies, this restaurant at a corner lot on Jalan Gasing was crowned the BEST Chicken Rice in Klang Valley.

That’s saying a lot, as you know how densely populated KL-PJ are with all those chicken rice stalls plying almost every corner in every coffee shop in the neighbourhood. Just mention the chains of Nam Heong or New Restaurant Ipoh Chicken Rice and you get commercialized Hainan chicken rice there.

Not to include the awkwardly positioned Chicken Rice Shop here, for that’s a different story altogether.

BEST Chicken Rice in Klang Valley

Was the accolade justified? You be the judge people … or hear more from the horse’s Motormouth after the jump …..

Kick Start the New Year with A Burp?!

December 18, 2010 | 4,140 views

Fresh Oysters in Abundance

Fresh oysters on the Rocks – Go crazy on these and guaranteed satisfaction. In every sense of the word.

I once stayed at Holiday Villa Subang, sometime back in 2008 or 2009. Good experience though, still remember how spacious the room was, and the easy access to everywhere around PJ and Subang. That experience (back when I was still with the civil service) was definitely one of the better ones throughout my tenure in the service. If you’ve been following this blog since 2008, you would have realized that travelling’s part of the job. (To some extent … eating as well)

Anyway, fast forward a couple of years and here I am, stranded relocated to the almighty madhouse that is Kuala Lumpur. But good to know that I am in good company, surrounded by foodies with a deep passion and penchant for everything and anything edible. 🙂

Grilled Lamb over Spitfire

From the look of it, this poor baby ain’t gonna miss his Mama too long …..

Holiday Villa Hotel & Resort Suites Subang (that’s the full name, btw) recently held a tasting session for the media; launching their inaugural New Year’s EveCarnival – BBQ Poolside Buffet. As far as Christmas and New Year buffets go, every year we’ll see tough competition amongst the F&B players and no doubt the thousand-and-one hotels in the Klang Valley.

Routinely, to set each other apart from the competition, the hotel would go to the extent of organizing a feast surrounding a particular theme. A gimmick or a timeless business strategy, it all depends on the execution of the tactics.

For this year, the management of Holiday Villa Subang has decided to embrace a carnival-like theme; and judging from the camaraderie of wacky costumed personnel, fancy decorations and the experience of eating beside their Olympic-sized swimming pool; caressed by the warm breeze of the night ….. Tradition Still Rules @ Koon Kee Wantan Mee in Damansara Uptown

December 14, 2010 | 16,487 views

Tai Kor at Work in Koon Kee

If he says wanna chop you into 18 pieces, would you have run or still stand around and snap? 🙂

Okay, since we were on yong tau foo, fish ball noodles and the gang, today let’s see some wantan mee for a change. And given the fact that KL’s populated by floggers (food bloggers, not the ones in prison), bloggers, vloggers (video bloggers?), and logheads (hehe, everywhere also got …), getting a breakfast-brunch-lunch-dinner-etc partner ain’t exactly hard.

Nor rocket science. Just ask, and guaranteed someone somewhere will have an idea on where to eat, what’s new and chic, as well as what NOT to eat.

Wantan Mee with Char Siew

Plain Jane of So Bland? Not really. For sometimes, the simplest works best. Trust Koon Kee Wantan Mee to bring back the flavours of the yesteryear’s ….

And so, Ken of Foodpoi became my victim one fine morning. Hahaha …. though you can’t say that you’re not privileged (ahem, cannot ah?) to be doing good deeds like bringing Motormouth around for food in KL, given the fact that I’m new and looking for quality street foods in KL can be categorized into an Amazing Race-impossible road block. 🙂

Let’s read up on why this certain Koon Kee in Damansara Uptown is far better than that other Koon Kee on Petaling Street …… Read the rest of this entry »

Ah Koong Eating House @ Pudu, Kuala Lumpur

December 11, 2010 | 13,397 views

Various Food @ Ah Koong Eating House

A splendid spread of a fish ball noodles and various stuffed items for breakfast at Ah Koong Eating House in Pudu of Kuala Lumpur. Good enough to give some of Ipoh’s better ones a run for their money, really.

And so, let’s backtrack slightly and see what I ate when I was in the process of relocating to KL. We were staying in a fairly new business lodge named Leisure Inn on Jalan Changkat Thambi Dollah somewhere behind of Times Square (more information in a later post), hence naturally the foodie instincts kicked in as soon as we ventured across the same road; laden with eateries bearing the most authentic of Chinese names and cuisines. I actually did a review on Dong Bei; a restaurant that specializes in Beijing-style of cuisine.

Various Seafood and Yong Tau Foo

Pick your noodles, your seafood (look at those fresh large prawns and even oysters!), fish cakes, stuffed fish paste (yong tau foo) and much more …..

Ah Koong Eating House is only a hop and a skip away from Leisure Inn (though I wouldn’t recommend for you to be hopping around like mad). We had our breakfast there one morning, since the whole Pudu area seemed to be slightly desolated …. maybe you can find good street eats around the corner on Jalan Pudu/Jalan Sayor (or whatever) but we settled for this since the eatery was already half-crowded that early on a Sunday morning.

When Frogs Meet Clams … (Lala Chong Seafood Restaurant @ Ara Damansara)

December 9, 2010 | 16,977 views

Fine time to be writing a piece on KL food for a change? Yup, almost a week now since I have settled down here in the city pumped with adrenaline from dusk til dawn. Still have yet to fully go on an eating spree, for unlike Ipoh, food hunting in KL can only be done after office hours (if you’re lucky and not caught in the jam for hours, or stuck in the office staring into the blank soul of a computer wishing to close that deal), OR on the weekends or public holidays.

Siong Tong La La

That is, if you’re still left standing from the 5 tormenting days of tough, labourious work.

Nah …. I was exaggerating. Truth is, almost everyone is in the holiday mood. From school children to working adults desperately seeking to clear their remaining leave, I wouldn’t be surprised if the traffic double come 2011.

Anyway, enough rambling already. Set that napkin into place and let’s do this, once more. Drool with me, people …… Read the rest of this entry »

Shin Kee Beef Noodles Specialist

July 15, 2010 | 15,503 views

Shin Kee Beef Noodles Specialist

Would you have trusted this “beef noodles specialist”, if not for the positive reviews?

Let’s talk about beef noodles in the Klang Valley today. I have tried Soong Kee beef noodles, Lai Foong beef noodles, and Yang Kee beef noodles over at Taman OUG. But none that managed to entice me for repeated visits over the years. Except for Shin Kee beef noodles on Jalan Tun Tan Cheng Lock, a stone’s throw away from the entrance to Petaling Street … Read the rest of this entry »

Mo Sang Kor Bak Kut Teh @ Pandamaran, Klang – Is This The Best?

July 2, 2010 | 24,846 views

And I thought I had them all. The BEST of them, so to speak. And then came the hoo-ha on a certain Klang Bak Kut Teh (bored of kept on repeating myself what Bak Kut Teh is, so read it up here on Wikipedia) that finally broke out of its mould; venturing not only out from the township of Klang with a branch in Puchong, but possibly the first Bak Kut Teh outlet to open in a food court of a major shopping complex – Hutong @ Lot 10.

(Though some might beg to differ, as Pao Xiang Bak Kut Teh have branches in One Utama, Pavilion, Centro Mall etc, and in Penang, there is a branch of BKT in shopping malls named Rou Gu Cha King or something)

Bak Kut Teh in Bowls

Mo Sang Kor Bak Kut Teh @ Pandamaran – Hokkien-style Bak Kut Teh that is thicker, darker in colour, and with a punchy, robust flavour you can’t forget after the first sip. Take that in a positive light, or vice versa.

I spied Mo Sang Kor at their Berkeley Garden branch, back when we went for a sample of Pao Xiang’s novelty of a BKT, with the pork cuts all tied up in the cooking process. I lost all hopes in BKT served in bowls (which by the way, happens to be the most traditional way of serving them, NOT in claypot … or so the die-hard, true-blue fanboys would say). Only Seng Huat; the one under the Klang bridge managed to impress, but the others have faltered.

Pandamaran Best Bah Kut Teh

Ah Xian said it’s good, the auntie could not care less in the presence of Motormouth, and wondering how the BKT feast fared? Read on …….
