Jelapang Famous Rojak & Laksa Stall

March 29, 2014 | 9,456 views

Dipping Prawn Cracker to Rojak Sauce

Possibly one of the few places that serve the rojak dipping sauce separately from the ensemble of cut fresh fruits; Jelapang Rojak Stall could be one of Ipoh’s best kept secret.

Are you back for Qing Ming Festival? The filial ones would be paying their annual tribute to the departed loved ones/ancestors; visiting and cleaning up burial grounds despite the relentless scorching weather and gathering with family members back in their hometowns.

What happens after the prayers and tribute? If you’re back in Ipoh, then you should really be eating. Already bored of the usual tourist haunts and seeking to avoid the crowd? Let me share with you a rojak (rojak is a typical Malaysian style of fruit salad served with crackers and a black sauce concocted from shrimp paste, sugar and crushed peanuts) stall nestled deep within the neighbourhood of Jelapang that has been the talk of town for decades now.

Allegra – A Jaunty Joint Amidst the Serenity

September 14, 2011 | 9,709 views

Lamb Bacon Bruschetta

Lamb Bacon Bruschetta – Crisp and savoury lamb bacon with a briny tinge; with ratatouille and crumbled feta cheese on toasted sourdough bread.

13th Sept 2011 : “If I have to summarize today in three words, let them be …  Hectic. Rambunctious and Beautiful.”

14th Sept 2011 : And then the words stopped flowing. All of a sudden what was supposed to be one of my finest days in ages turned out to be a misplaced hope. Like shattered dreams, my world took a drastic downward spiral … crashing back down to earth. Or maybe 6 feet under.

I paused in the midst of that sentence, and left this draft in the lurch.

Breath Taking Golf Course View

Oh sunny skies, endless greens and gentle breeze …. how I missed thee ….

The time spent away from the office was at least … mildly consoling. Like how a child’s pitiful tears might not get him an ice-cream, yet a handful of sweets would do just fine. After all, life’s not always so rosy ….

So happened I will be spending the remainder of my weekdays in a golf resort here in Klang Valley. And no, lest you think this Motormouth has gone all ‘atas’ (premium. high class. snobbish), this is for WORK.

For tonight’s story, I’ll take you back to Meru Valley Golf Resort in Jelapang, Ipoh …. and discover this new and reclusive gourmet deli named Allegra.

Jelapang Famous Roast Duck @ Tai Sai Hee Duck King

April 29, 2010 | 12,384 views

Pei Pa Roast Duck @ Tai Sai Hee, Jelapang

Gorgeously-glistening & crispy skin of the marinated roast duck @ Tai Sai Hee in Jelapang, Ipoh

Mention Char Siew, or Siew Yoke for lunch or dinner (or breakfast also can lah …) and you’ll see me flooding the entire street with my drool. Especially those proportionately cut pieces of lean-fat meat with a 50-50 ratio preferably, or in some instances, 60-40 also can, with the higher percentage of melt-in-mouth fat more than the tougher lean portion. Better yet, pair them with white rice, oil rice, noodles, or porridge, and you’ll have a balanced feast of porky haven.

Tai Sai Hee Duck King Price List

Squint if you have to, but the ducks at Tai Sai Hee are priced from RM14/USD4.40 (half a duck) to RM28/USD8.80 (one whole duck). Except for the special XO Duck which is priced higher, and piqued our interest indefinitely.

There are several restaurants/food stalls that are famous for roast ducks, and various other roasted meats in Ipoh. One being the famous Sun Yeong Wai in Ipoh Jaya, somewhere within the vicinity of Gunung Rapat of Ipoh. Another old classic in Tasek is Kedai Makanan Hong Kong, that prides on their oil chicken (crispy chicken bathed in oil), roast ducks, and my personal favourite; the Fried Crispy Nam Yue Pork. Not forgetting the recent find at Falim’s Sri Taman Mas that has gained an admirable following nonetheless.
