Good Rejects? – Just like an abundance of GOLD; a tray full of irresistible Heong Peng (fragrant biscuits) will just have to do for now. And who cares if the biscuits were not of top notch quality?

In the previous post, I did summarize some of the food haunts I have visited over the course of one week; when the festivities granted everyone with an opportunity to indulge (sinfully) without guilt for once. And of course, the aftermath’s deadly ….

Ingredients for Heong Peng

To make Heong Peng of uniformed sizes and of the right texture, with a standardized dollop of molasses; this takes skills.

If you have been one loyal/keen/ardent follower of this blog (please make my day and nod in agreement!), you would have noticed that generally, I stick to eateries and confectioneries that still pride on their original roots; the most authentic of flavours can only be savoured if you’re using charcoal to fry your noodles, charred claypots to cook your claypot chicken rice, and nothing beats ‘heong peng’ (or heong peah) broiled in a specially constructed cement contraption fuelled by coconut husk.

So if you do not mind the extra miles taken to grab something of sentimental values, worthy of your effort (satisfaction guaranteed) of venturing all the way into the residential area of Gunung Rapat in Ipoh, then by all means, do read on ….. Read the rest of this entry »

Famous Aulong Heo Pia (“Fragrant Biscuits”) @ Taiping

Aulong Famous Heo Pia Biscuits

Heo Pia or Heong Peah, or Heong Peng in Cantonese is literally translated to ‘Fragrant Biscuits’; a type of confectionery believed to have originated from Teluk Intan of Perak, but there are detractors who claim that Gunung Rapat in Ipoh was the place that started baking this biscuit.

So where does Taiping come in the picture? Seriously, I do not care much about the origin of Heong Peah, for you can’t get the same generic taste in Ipoh, Teluk Intan or even Taiping.

I have written about Seng Kee; the coconut shell-broiled in large urns heong peah in Gunung Rapat of Ipoh and how the fantastically crispy and flaky pastry won me over …. not to mention the sheer delight in knowing that they STILL bake the biscuits in the most traditional manner.In Teluk Intan, you can find various confectioneries selling Heong Peah, from the famous Tiger Head brand named Sin Joo Heang to Ta Sin Guan Tin and Sin Guan Hoe.

For this post, let me bring you up north … to the serene town of Taiping where we ventured to seek for this legendary Heo Pia (‘legendary’ for the famed biscuits, as well as the notoriously hidden location) in Aulong; a small township to the west of Taiping town.

Heong Peng, or Heong Peah, or Heang Peah (literally translated to Fragrant Biscuits) is one of Ipoh’s most famous pastry (if not THE most famous), widely marketed and commercialized thanks to the commendable efforts of Yee Hup, one of the most popular brand of Heong Peng originating from Gunung Rapat.
“Sweat … sweat …. why this fella snap my picture one?!! Now lemme stack em up and build a Twin Tower from the biscuits, fit for a Spiderman from France …”

Meet The Floggers (Chapter 3) : Right Round Gunung Rapat in Ipoh

Third time’s the charm they say. Thus, this 3rd instalment of Meet The Floggers will round up the saga nicely. Where else to conclude the chapters, but in my hometown of good old Ipoh itself?
Come early, else risk standing around waiting for empty seats @ Kwong Hong
Since Jason and Citygal were both back in Ipoh for an early Father’s Day celebration (how filial!), I took the opportunity and dragged myself and Jason over to Gunung Rapat (Citygal’s territory …. not mine. So NOW you know whom to call and ask for help in this area!) for that elusive Yong Tau Foo. OK, slightly exaggerated here, as the shop is in fact, ON the main road, in clear view, but me and KYT missed the shop not once, but twice.
Talk about lost sheeps. We might as well audition for a role in Lost; no artificial panicking necessary.
Yup, you’re NOT seeing super-imposed images of Yong Tau Foo. They practically stuffed those fish paste into ANYTHING imaginable ….
