A Hainanese Kopitiam Story – Double Roasted Coffee to Kickstart a Sunday?

September 23, 2012 | 12,242 views

Toasted Round Bun with Kaya & Butter

The Star Metro started a marathon of 10 highly-regarded kopitiams across the country yesterday; featuring a story about this almost unheard of Hainanese coffee shop bestowed with close to half a century’s worth of legacy in Taman Eng Ann of Klang.

You must have noticed my fascination with Hainanese style of coffee stall (the recently retold story of Ah Weng Kor in Imbi kept my faith in check); a casual joint routinely featuring the breakfast ensemble of thickly brewed coffee, tea or Hainanese Tea which in its essence should be renamed to ‘cham’ and not forgetting the half-boiled eggs with runny yolks to envelop the toasted breads sandwiching a cold slab of butter and ‘kaya’ with.

Authentic Hainanese Cuisine @ Wan Li Restaurant, Taiping

June 6, 2010 | 10,435 views

Hainanese Chicken Chop

Hainanese Chicken Chop (RM6.50/USD2.00) – Gravy-licious serving of a tender chicken chop battered, fried and topped lavishly with the brown sauce with onions, carrots and peas.

I wrote about Yut Sun Restaurant in Taiping before, a famous kopitiam that serves a wide array of Hainanese dishes, including the perennial favourite of many; Hainanese Chicken Chop, as well as the not-so-common Roti Sayur, and they even have an ‘Egg Steak‘ to pique your interest. Best of all, Yut Sun’s PORK-FREE, hence you’ll see people from all races dining together in harmony …..

Corny but true. 🙂

However, this time around, I was aiming for Wan Li Restaurant on Jalan Kota instead. Situated on the same side as Kok Beng Hainan Chicken Rice (amongst the TOP 10 Chicken Rice in Malaysia!!) and opposite of Kum Loong Dim Sum, most people would pass by this place without even batting an eyelid; judging from the disdain and rather rundown outlook of the premise. But DON’T come to conclusion just yet. For more often that not, it’s places like this that holds promise, and dishes out foods that arrest your attention; ensuring perpetual revisits …….   Read the rest of this entry »

Kuala Kangsar in a Whirlwind

August 18, 2009 | 9,986 views
Kuala Kangsar – The Royal Town of Perak, Malaysia. Not a destination listed in a common tourist’s itinerary. Easily accessible from the highway, though not necessarily translates to higher traffic. A simple town in general, it was only my third visit to the comparatively serene town.

Yut Loy Coffee Shop (read about them from rasarasa.net) has been in existence for more than 50 years now, spanning three generations of the Chong family. A ‘MUST’ stopover for outsiders in town, for a taste of their traditional (and immensely popular) Hainanese pau, coffee/tea, and even Hainanese chicken chop, steak, or fried rice. Proclaiming my Undying Love …. Curry Mee, anyone?

June 4, 2009 | 8,557 views
My undying love for anything remotely resembling curry mee, be it dry or wet, santan-full or santan-less, spicy/sour/sweet, from north to south and everywhere else, led me to this place near to Medan Gopeng in Ipoh, a hop and skip away from the famed cave of Sam Poh Tong.
DA boss himself in action …..

This stall is operated by the owner of the shop itself. Specializing in Hainan style curry noodles, as well as other items such as Hainan toast with butter + kaya, and steamed bread, it seems the husband to the owner of the shop (her name’s Elise by the way) is a relative of Yee Fatt’s, hence the specialty of Hainan curry noodles.

Chong Kok Kopitiam, Klang

March 28, 2008 | 7,836 views

Continuation from KL Food Tour 2nd edition, haha, as the backlog of places I’ve eaten remain as many, and poor old memory kept failing me often, better rush through all the old picks before turning to newer ones.
This old kopitiam has its own history, and the special thing is you can find Malays, Chinese, Indians, etc sitting on their tables, sipping the coffees and enjoying their toasts, all under one roof. How ‘muhibbah’ can you get?
