For something Lite, yet Desire-able? (Lite Desire @ De Garden, Ipoh)

November 12, 2010 | 4,100 views

Tri Colors Fish Fillet with Lai Fun

A very healthy looking dish, aesthetically-pleasant as well with blanched ‘lai fun’ aka rice noodles, braised in a light stock with bean sprouts, julienned carrot, and basil. The slices of grouper fillet were succulent with no fishy aftertaste, garnished with black sesame seeds on top. (RM12.80/USD4.20)

Pardon the cliched title of the post. But Lite Desire did bring to mind another one of those cafe-cum-kopitiam-cum-bistro that serves nothing but deep fried snacks readily available from supermarkets, nasi lemak without the santan (coconut milk) = Blasphemy, say you?!, various pre-mixed white coffee masquerading as the real brew, and diluted soup from the can.

Goji Longan Chrysanthemum Tea

Goji Longan Chrysanthemum Tea (RM5.80/USD1.90) – The first sip was awkward, as I tasted sweet chrysanthemum tea, but with the aroma and essence of wolfberries, and the sweetness of dried longans. Then it dawned on me that the combination might work wonder for healthy purposes.

But I was wrong. This quaint, homely cafe (still refuse to categorize this as a restaurant given the tight space with a cozy ambience) parked on top of Pappa Rich at De Garden in Ipoh (YES, there IS an eatery on the first floor!) has been around for 9 months now.

And I definitely would not have paid this place a visit had it not been recommended by a few readers, and a friend of my family’s. Read on to find out why this restaurant deserves to be mentioned alongside the other eateries at De Garden, and still hold its head up high …. Read the rest of this entry »

Aun Kheng Lim Salted Chicken

June 29, 2008 | 21,113 views

Short post today, to answer a query regarding Ipoh’s salted chicken. In fact, nowadays, the number of shops selling this Ipoh’s specialty are on the rise, but one brand manages to stand out among the crowd, and it’s no surprise Aun Kheng Lim had stood the test of time for an impressive 21 years, no less.

My picture does NOT do the chicken justice … Trust me …. it tastes WAY better than it looks.

Impostors are aplenty, but none that I’ve tried can wrest the crown from the defending champ. At RM16 per chick, on weekends and public holidays, you may have to call and book your chickens (no, not THAT chickens. Drop that naughty thought now … =P).

The portion is not big, but adequeate for sharing among 2, or gobbled up by one hungry soul. (which I normall do!) Herbs such as Dong Guai and Gei Zhi (Wolfberry) combined with the flavourful salt crystals used to bake the chicken wrapped in paper, creates a divine dish (or snack, depends on how you look at it). Tender meat falling off the bone, the best way to eat it is to incorporate your bare hands, barbaric instincts unleashed, and tear the pieces to oblivion. Muahaha …. =)

Location : No 24,Jalan Theatre, 30300 Ipoh. Tel : 05-2542998.

The other barbarians who have torn their way into the poor chickens :

Tummythoz, WMW, KampungboyCitygal, Jackson, Jason and countless others.
