Beyond Conventional Chinese Dining @ AEON Ipoh Station 18 – Dragon-i & Canton-i

February 11, 2013 | 6,653 views

Custard Cream Bun

The captivating part about Ipoh food is that … good food are in abundance almost 24/7 and there would always be something new to discover during every visit back to my hometown. This, in spite of the nearly three decades of my life spent growing up, educated and even worked here.

And close to 5 years of writing food and travel stories on this blog.

But, and that’s a huge B-U-T, I find it a struggle to embark on any food hunt during Chinese New Year. Yes, only this particular Achilles heel-of-a-festive season in the entire year whereby either  most of the good hawker stalls are closed for a few days (some up to a week!) or the ones opened are cashing in by increasing prices and compromising on quality/quantity.

Shrewd business acumen ma …… More grandfather stories ahead. Read the rest of this entry »

The Hype That Was AEON Station 18 & The Mia Eating House @ Ipoh

April 10, 2012 | 10,035 views

A Carnival Life @ AEON Station 18

Life’s a freaking carnival @ AEON Station 18, Pasir Puteh, Ipoh; the new and easily largest shopping mall in all of Perak. (And no, the Golden Retriever does not come with the experience)

A few posts back, I was actually very keen to explore this brand new shopping mall in Ipoh; a new Jusco (now a blanket rebranding to AEON across all outlets). I still vaguely remember how back in 1997 the first Jusco opened its doors in Ipoh, effectively burying the ghost of Super Kinta’s past. Although one might say that the Jusco Kinta City has seen better days, yet the shopping mall is rarely empty even on weekdays. Try to visit on weekends or public holidays, or worse … the festive season (CNY especially!) and you’ll be wondering what the fuss was about over this two-floors departmental store.

Then, AEON Station 18 arrived on the scene. A good 15 years later, and I guess folks staying around Ipoh Barat must have been overjoyed at this development. Rather than bracing an astounding 10km drive (don’t laugh, here in Ipoh every km feels like miles …) to Ipoh Garden East, they can literally hop over to Station 18 instead.

Plentiful of Noodles @ The Mia

And I know a post without any food will sound dry and bland. So here’s a menu featuring 20 types of noodles (!) to tie you over @ The Mia Eating House; within a short drive away from AEON Station 18.

As usual, if you’re ready for the insanity, jump on the bandwagon ….. Read the rest of this entry »

Sungai Wang Seafood Restaurant & The NEW AEON Station 18 @ Ipoh

March 27, 2012 | 9,309 views

Bitter Gourd Salted Egg

Salted Egg Bitter Gourd (RM10/USD3.30) – Deep-fried to perfection, coated with a delectable batter of salted egg and lightly spiced up with finely-chopped red chillies.

I don’t know which part of the title attracted you most. The fact that there IS one Sungai Wang in Ipoh (albeit this is not a shopping mall, but a ‘dai chow’ seafood restaurant tucked hidden in the neighbourhood of Kampung Simee), OR the part that made many hearts a-fluttered and tossing in bed relentlessly from the sheer excitement;

AEON Ipoh Station 18 – A spanking new mall in Ipoh come 29th March (Thurs) 2012. And the largest, easily.

Read on to find out the intriguing saga behind BOTH ….. Read the rest of this entry »
