Oodles of Noodles & Go Crazy With the Chili Sauce!

Chicken Feet and MushroomNoodles

Sexy, slender and gelatinous feet of a chick. Braised and served with earthy bites of shiitake mushrooms, a few stalks of Chinese mustard greens and of course, the star of the show; heaps of fresh noodles.

I have been eating noodles more than rice since coming to KL. Not that I have an aversion towards one or the other, but the abundance of shops and stalls selling wantan noodles, beef noodles, pan mee, fish ball noodles got me dizzy from all the extensive choices.

And can’t deny that when you’re not in a large group, ordering dishes with rice sounds kinda silly. Hence, individualized portions are the way to go.

This was last week, when the Witch thought of a late lunch with this Motormouth who’s almost perpetually stuck around Subang area. (hint hint … so now you know where to find me?) A random search on the web found me this not so encouraging review from vkeong on Uncle Seng‘s, and I had doubts. Nevertheless, we soldiered on since Witch has been there, and there were rave reviews on the eatery too. So how did this go?

Deep Fried Pork Noodles

Deep Fried Pork with noodles – Note that you can order the LARGE portion for about RM1 or so extra. But be aware that the regular serving already packs a rather heavy load.

It was almost 3pm, and the shop was still crowded like mad. Imagine crowd flowing to the sidewalk and people standing around waiting for vacant tables. YES, this was THAT famous, albeit in the slightly deserted lanes of SS15 on a weekend afternoon. Scorching hot one, at that.

Mushroom Noodles

Witch had to settle for the chicken-less version, since they ran out of shredded chicken. So she got more mushrooms than she bargained for.

Cut the story short, I parked myself right beside a mother and son combination, with the kid happily (and sloppily, I might add) slurping on his plate of bland noodles looking bleached and almost tasteless.

But he was darn into his serving of noodles, making slurping noises as if he’s downing a hearty good bowl of ramen, and fingers coming into play picking up noodles randomly strewn all over his plate. Damn, how could a kid enjoy a plate of bland, barren noodles without any meat or greens?!!!

Chili Sauce @ Uncle Seng

And yes, this was THE must have if you’re having noodles here. Unless you’re going for the natural taste of the noodles smothered with lard. I suspect it was lard that made the noodles more palatable than they appeared.

A quick glance at the paper menu revealed a very bare mechanism and limited options. Noodles with either char siew, wantan (dumplings), deep fried pork, chicken and mushroom, chicken feet and mushroom, curry chicken and a few others. Everything was priced reasonably, with nothing above RM7/USD2.30 if I’m not mistaken.

The wait was longer than expected, since most patrons were still patiently waiting for theirs. One thing of note here, you can see many college students hanging around since it’s SS15 to start with.

Special Chili Sauce

Don’t go overboard. But you CAN if you’re sick like yours truly (on some days, but on this particular afternoon on the brink of heatstroke, I held back the sickening thought), and help yourself to the bottle of chili sauce conveniently placed within arm’s reach.

Verdict? Not as tasteless/bland as some might have said. Nor was this extremely tasty and warrants repeated visits. But credits to be given to the noodles, cleverly pathetic in appearance yet packed quite some flavours, owing to the light coating of lard (or shallot oil, or some other oil I was not able to put my fat finger on it) and of course. …. generous amount of their special chili sauce. I witnessed some fans (they had to be) almost drowning their plate of noodles with the blood red concoction; a scary thought since you might be spewing fumes from the mouth and flames from the other orifice the very next day …..

Uncle Seng Fresh Handmade Noodles

Almost 4pm when we left. And they close at 4pm daily. To imagine the amount of business they’re doing since morning! (8am – 4pm daily, except Mondays)

Yeahloh… hehe, but the noodles was the main star of the meal. Even the deep fried pork was mediocre. I forgot to mention.
