[...] Western food in Ipoh has grown leaps and bounds since the days when it was either Rendezvous, First Coffee House, Scotch Pub, Miner’s Arms or to some lesser extent (catering to simpler, fuss-free palates of the younger ones), Crazy Ice Cream House. Back when we were still watching Ultraman, Voltron and still idolized turtles with weapons and talking trash (somewhat), dining out at any of the above was a cause for rejoice. [...]

Thanks Farah. Good to hear that. Aside from Pizza Hut outlets, pretty hard to find halal pizzas in Ipoh.

Hiya. My husband and I had steamed fish head at Ngan Woh Bercham for breakfast and then rice + dishes including 3-ways egg and stirred fried watercress for lunch at Wong Koh Kee Lrg Panglima while in Ipoh today. Both were extremely good. I especially loved how everything at Ngan Woh worked together – the classy and super-fresh head, the interesting addition of bitter gourd, the special green basil dipping sauce, the extra touch of chopped Japanese cucumbers on the side. The guy was also super-nice – I wanted to buy home some sauce and he refused to take any cash – just gave me plastic bags and said to help myself. Neither of these are on the usual ‘top of the pops in Ipoh’ foodie lists and we wouldn’t ever have stumbled on either without your terrific posts, so thanks a bunch !

You’re most welcomed, Su Sian.
Your comment made my day, really.
Rarely will you see Wong Koh Kee or Ngan Woh in the MUST-EAT list, lesser of a chance to be featured in Lonely Planet etc.
But ask the locals, and trust them to surprise you with fantastic finds …..

I love your blog! I’m a food hunter too. Just that I don’t blog them, hah!
Recently, I found a place with the best asam laksa so far in ipoh. The restaurant is big with the laksa stall just located at the small corner. But I have to admit that the laksa there is delicous. And apart from that, they also sell yellow glutinous served with curry chicken which is also very nice. You guys should give a try.
The name of the restaurant is Sun Guochow, or people call its nickname “Zhuk Lum”, located just behind the ‘Tong Shui gai’ opposite Sam Tet primary school. And the laksa stall only opens on friday to sunday. Lunch time would be preferable.

Oh the food court there? Yeah … never been there all my life actually. Pathetic right?
Okay, but I’m not a fan of asam laksa. So this won’t come as a top priority. Yet.
But thanks for the heads-up.

I was told that the real originator of Ipoh white coffee can be tasted at Kedai Kopi Chang Jiang, Jalan Pasir Putih (opposite Ipoh Classic Spa which used to be the Post Office). It’s really, really smooth, and not bitter like the Old Town White Coffee. Must try!

Thanks Peter for the information. Chang Jiang is the origin of white coffee?!
Hmm … interesting. Chang Jiang, Xin Xiang Er Nong and Sin Lean Lee in old town essentially serve the same thicker, more robust coffee without the usual addition of excessive milk.

Hi there nurul ain, for Halal steamboat I cannot recommend you any that I know of.
But MP (the bungalow) restaurant and steamboat in Greentown is a pork-FREE restaurant, and
they serve steamboat at night. Or maybe you can try contact the various hotels, like Cafe@6 in Tower Regency or Hill City for
sometimes they do have steamboat promotion, I believe.

I have been to a hawker centre in Ipoh some years back and the Hor Hee noodle is quite nice. I am told that is the best place for Hor Hee at night. It’s near an old cinema, the stalls are arranged along a road side.
Can anyone let me know where is it and what other food is nice there ?

salute Ipohites!
i come in peace and in search of great bites!
i especially like: sarkot and the darkish chewy pungent fish cakes.
can someone enlighten me wot name these enigmatic bites be called?
i always have trouble asking people where to find these because i don’t know what is the vernacular name and they come in all shapes and sizes, though mainly flat rectangles, through cuboids, to even wedges.
i liked those served in
1) kg simee wet mkt chee cheing fun stall
2) gunung rapat laksa shop (next to a ‘doris’ tailor)
3) little stall inside keng nam
do tell where else i may find these deluxious morsels!
viva la ipoh bites!

Sar Kok Liew is called … erm as such. Or stuffed yambean.
Chewy pungent fish cakes?! Beats me. Got photos ah?
Try the famous Big Tree Foot (Dai Shu Geok) at Jalan King in Pasir Pinji, Jalan Kampar’s Nam Fatt Fishball Noodles, Sar Kok Liew at Bercham’s Ngan Woh Coffee Shop that also serves fish head with bitter gourd, Gunung Rapat’s Kwong Hong with a variety of other ‘liew’ and also Desa Rishah Beef Noodles and other stuff.

Dear admin and all,

Which one is the original white coffee in Ipoh? Or is it not even inside Ipoh (Kedai Kopi Chang Jiang, Jalan Pasir Putih) as commented by Peter Chang above?
