The New Vietnamese/French Kid in Town – Alex House

June 29, 2013 | 6,782 views

Alex House @ Ipoh - Vietnamese & French

More Vietnamese street food than haute cuisine/fine dining, Alex House sits at a corner of this quiet (well, almost) neighbourhood where the vegetarian restaurant used to occupy.

With the haze all but gone, it’s time to go food hunting/day-tripping again. The Friday evening traffic was horrendous in PJ, a positive sign that people are indeed on the road, going home, traveling to malls, sucking in the fresh(er) air compared to a week ago where all we had was dust and smoke.

Catching up on lost sleep over the past week (on average of 4 hours per night, seriously), the precious minutes of relaxation were all invested in short naps and lengthy periods of apathy.

A new restaurant in town, Alex House opened to low fanfare, until a reader dropped me a mail on this interesting concept of French-Vietnamese cuisine. A stone’s throw away from home, of course Motormouth’s interest was piqued. Here we go … an Ipoh food review that was way overdue.  Read the rest of this entry »

Flavours of Saigon – Day 3 : Cho Da Lat (Dalat Market), Bun Rieu & Banh Mi

“Previously … on Motormouth From Ipoh ….”

Flavours of Saigon – Motormouth’s Priceless Tips & Rants!
Day 1 – Ben Thanh Market & Around Saigon

Day 2 – The Journey to Dalat

Good Morning Dalat

A gloomy morning @ Dalat; waking up to almost complete stillness … saved for the gentle roar of a few bikes. You can see the town from afar; separated by a canal lined with a beautifully landscaped garden and trees.

And it’s finally Saturday! Talk about survival skills. Been a few weeks since I last had a full 5 days week, hence the past week was every bit of a chore than how the boring weekdays have already been notoriously branded as. Yeah, and that day trip to Batu Pahat in between kicked things up a notch; partially thanks to the local rendition of Wantan Mee tossed in a spicy and sour sauce; almost ketchup-like condiment.

Enough about that, let’s embrace the weekend with open arms! Saigon stories continue with an alluring morning recap of the Dalat market experience. More captions than actual writings (it’s the weekend after all!), and we’re good to go ….

Hotel Breakfast

Buffet breakfast; consisting of more or less generic buffet spread combining local items as well as the regular sausages, bacons etc. Oh, and do grab a cup of the artichoke tea; a Dalat-only special.

Flavours of Saigon – Day 1 (Ben Thanh Market, Hoa Su Restaurant, Water Puppet Show & Nam Son Beefsteak)

August 26, 2012 | 7,043 views

Grilled Fish Saigon Style

A close resemblance to our “Chicken Fish” (read my Teo Chiew Restaurant post for another shot and more information on this peculiar fish with an identity crisis!); this grilled fish dish at Hoa Su Restaurant was simply brilliant.

And finally we come to Day One of the Ho Chi Minh trip (let’s call this Saigon for short). After a good two weeks of delay, I figure that let’s get this over and done with, before my memory cells dissipate into oblivion and I cannot tell apart the street food from one another!

Have your toilet break. Or light up and go fog some mosquitoes out from the bushes. This can get a bit …. elaborate. Ready? Let’s jump into the thick of action then. Read the rest of this entry »

Vnam Kitchen Restaurant – Vietnamese Food in Ipoh

September 29, 2009 | 16,575 views

VNam Kitchen Decorations

Very down to earth motto printed on the menu, and the vibrant decor inside of Vnam Kitchen.

A new restaurant serving Vietnamese cuisine opened its door to the public recently in Ipoh, at the same spot occupied by the previous Soon Fatt Restaurant on Jalan Seenivasagam around Greentown. Click on the link for the post on the NEW Soon Fatt Restaurant.

Vnam Kitchen is in fact, owned and run by a couple who had been operating various stalls and outlets serving delectable and authentic Vietnamese cuisine in the Klang Valley, located in several food courts by the name of Vietnamese Cuisine.

Vietnamese Drip Coffee (RM4.50)

Since then, they’ve ‘surrendered’ their premises in the Klang Valley to their sons, and subsequently moved to Ipoh and opened up a stall by the name of (what else?) Vietnamese Cuisine in Woolley Food City in Ipoh Garden.

Day 4 (Back to Hanoi) – Triple Breakfast for the Hungry Souls?

March 15, 2009 | 7,015 views
Continuation from Day 3 – An Even Harder Path in Sapa, Vietnam ….
Pho Bo Gia Truyen @ 49, Bat Dan Street, Old Quarters, Hanoi – One of the BEST around?
For those who might be complaining/throwing tantrums/tearing the house down (heh) reading Motormouth From Ipoh only to discover more and more posts on travelling and sceneries, sans mouth-watering shots of sumptuous food (Oh Glorious Food!) can heave a sigh of relief, at long last …..
Opens daily from 6.30 am onwards, catering mostly to the BREAKFAST crowd. Don’t come during lunch hours. But they open for dinner as well.
Vietnam boasts such an amazing repertoire of noodle dishes, from Pho Bo to Pho Ga, and Bun Cha to Bun Rieu. Sounds alien eh? They’re mostly noodles with soup, and served either with beef (bo), chicken (ga) pork, seafood, or even with beancurd or plain vegetables. Read the rest of this entry »
