The Aussie Burger (275 baht for Regular, 340 baht for Large) – Beetroot, Grilled Pineapple, Crispy Bacon, Cheddar Cheese & Fried Egg with Vegemite Mayo.

And so, in the last post, there was a glimpse of a Pork Samurai Burger from McDonald’s in Bangkok that we could not help but savour again and again. And again.

Like during every trip, I was like enamoured, and enthralled by the thought of sinking my teeth into a PORK burger. At a fast food joint that’s almost synonymous with the American culture already so ingrained into the Asian blood now.

But wait, shouldn’t Bangkok be Pad Thai, Khao Man Gai, Tom Yum & street food? Where does a burger chain or taking it a step further; a gourmet burger specialist come into play?

Bangkok Burger Company probably has a whiff of charm tucked underneath their sleeves somewhere. Churning out bowls after bowls of the famed Boat Noodles of Bangkok; watching them in action was akin to poetry in motion; seamless transition between every single process.

If it’s your first time here, and wondering why the flurry of Bangkok food posts in a Malaysian food and travel blog, don’t worry. This site ain’t spammed, hacked or the author gone bonkers. Well, I might have. That would best explain the current under-the-weather spell that I’m in. Bang Rak; a community of foodies and overflowing with hospitality

Following up on the stories of Nang Loeng market and Or Tor Kor market in Bangkok, we decided to venture slightly off-radar to this old neighbourhood of Bang Rak; alighting from Saphan Taksin BTS (skytrain) station; right before crossing Taksin Bridge to the western continent (Khlong San/Bang Lamphu Lang districts) separated by the famous Chao Phraya river.

Now, Bang Rak may not be featured prominently in guide books or TV shows, but there are a few good gems worth dropping by for, and the plus point of having everything within walking distance (under 1km) from the BTS station. Or Tor Kor Market @ Bangkok, Thailand

You know sometimes, the mere thought of walking into a wet market will irk the most conventional of tourists. Imagine the moss-covered walls, damp and humid air trapped within a close vicinity; the stench from live stocks gathered in extremely packed proximity, butchers having the time of their lives with machetes drenched in red liquid, and a hawker centre that caters more to the workers and locals, rather than the unsuspecting walk-in customers without a clue.

That could have been Nang Loeng Market (full story by clicking HERE), oozing with rustic charm and an incomparable environment; coupled with delicious finds possibly unrivalled elsewhere. Certainly not at the commercialized Chatuchak.

 But what if you’re trying to settle for the best of both worlds? Where the locals and foreigners still mingle within arm’s length, and you won’t end up waltzing through the premise and coming out on the other side drenched with sweat and smelling unpleasant?

Everything’s well-spaced out, with good ventilation from the high ceiling, and cooling system in place.

Or Tor Kor Market; within walkable distance from the famous Chatuchak Weekend Market will please you both ways; either you’re a “Tai Tai” (rich lady) born in Thailand, or from another country, you’re bound to find something you fancy here. Idling ladies with mortar and pestle; grinding freshly-julienned young papaya for the perennial favourite salad of the Thais; Som Tum, sweet and juicy pineapples, and salted fish flattened to lift that crispiness factor.

Nang Loeng Food Market :  Sounds like a charm; luring unassuming adventurers in with the sights of fresh produce from the farms, rivers and ponds of Thailand. More than a century’s old now; Nang Loeng was officially opened on 1900 (!), and back then was one of the most popular, modernistic and flourishing wet market existing in the town of Bangkok.

If you’re familiar with Damnoen Saduak Floating Market in Thailand, or Chatuchak Weekend Market in Bangkok, then I guess you’re not one who’s completely oblivious to what markets are in Thailand. But then again, the former floating market has been featured in countless documentaries, plastered across postcards and written about incessantly in various forms of media. And Chatuchak is well, a huge labyrinth of stalls that cater more to the tourists than locals; selling everything under the sun (literally).

But wait, why is this shabby, seemingly unheard-of Nang Loeng market  located to the east of Banglamphu featured on this blog? Has Motormouth gotten lost, or married a Thai?!! ….. Read the rest of this entry »

It was almost blissful. That I left the cold/emotionless cubicle, the piles of work heaped on these strained shoulders, the manic chase for numbers, and the country plagued by impossibly ridiculous stories (the Ms Tow Truck saga being the icing on the cake throughout the hiatus).

And stepped foot on Thailand’s soils, once again.

Pardon the lack of notice. As if you ever needed one in the first place. Some might be heaving a cyclone of a sigh of relief without the constant doses of ramblings these past few days. Others might felt dejected, longing, craving and tantrums being thrown around (ahem, ahem … I can dream, can’t I?!).
