Curry Wild Boar @ Son Wun Nam Restaurant, Tanjung Malim

November 15, 2010 | 7,970 views

Curry Wild Boar

Curry Wild Boar (RM12/USD3.90) – Cubes of chunky, gamey meat from the wild, paired with potatoes in a thick, robust curry paste. Typical Chinese style of dry curry dishes.

Talk about hectic. Pardon me, for Motormouth just returned from another short excursion to Kuala Lumpur, and suffering the wrath of heavy, torrential downpour somewhere along the expressway.

But as they say; ‘When life gives you lemon, you make lemonade?’ The saying somewhat rang true when the foodie instincts suddenly kicked in and off we went for an early dinner at Fu Man Restaurant in Tanjung Malim. Or so we thought, already contemplating on the prospects of licking our fingers from the delicious deep fried salted pork belly or even a serving of the almost extinct dish of stir-fried pig’s large intestines with pineapples.

Lo and behold, Fu Man was packed to the brim! A few tourist buses were parked haphazardly by the road, and we suspected something amiss when a few diners were standing around waiting impatiently although there were a few vacant tables here and there. The restaurant was booked by the tour agency, and this called an immediate alternative around town ….. Read the rest of this entry »

Deep Fried Salted Pork Belly @ Fu Man Restaurant

October 22, 2010 | 28,650 views

Fried Pork Belly

The signature fried salted pork belly from Fu Man; if you don’t mind the fatty cuts, then this platter of absolutely scrumptious and crispy pork belly should be up your alley.

Aside from the famous Tanjung Malim pau from Yik Mun (which was nothing to shout about anyway), I have never ventured out of my cocoons and seek for good food around Tanjung Malim; the southern most town of Perak sharing its border with Selangor. (Although Hutan Melintang/Bagan Datoh to the southwest of Perak also shares a border with Selangor’s Sabak Bernam).

Rather, on most days we settled for the same old Pun Chun duck noodles in Bidor, Choy Kee’s famous pork knuckle in Sungkai and even Slim River’s claypot fish and bullfrogs.

Fu Man Restaurant @ Tanjung Malim

Fu Man Restaurant can’t be seen from the main road, hidden by the current construction works (maybe widening of roads, but JKR works in mysterious ways ….). But just follow the signs to UPSI (Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris) and you should be on the right route.

Imagine of all people, I heard about Fu Man from a group of foodies from Singapore! Yup, thanks to Martine and his battalion of food enthusiasts when we met in Ipoh (albeit for a very brief period), I came to know about this somewhat hidden gem in Tanjung Malim; serving fresh and delicious seafood, pork dishes and at affordable prices to boot.

We ended up buying home a DOUBLE serving of their famed deep fried salted pork belly, and a portion each of the braised pork belly with yam slices and the appetizing vinegar pork trotters. Read the rest of this entry »

Breakfast in Kampar, Tapah or Tanjung Malim?

August 31, 2009 | 21,997 views
Happy Merdeka everyone !!! A little late, but better be late than never, right? A rather eventful journey back from KL moments ago, with a 10 cars pile-up on the highway heading north, creating a helluva ruckus, mainly from the slowed down vehicles no thanks to the over-eager and caring crowd (read : nosy), and the traffic on the opposite side that’s heading south snaking from Ipoh all the way to the accident scene at around Tapah.
Goes to show how united we Malaysians are, especially in such dire situations (or interesting, depends on which side of the fence you’re on), as people from all walks of life, from the young ‘rempits’ to the old-timers, we never failed to come to a halt on the roads, and express our ‘concern’ towards such unfortunate incidents befalling others. 1Malaysia indeed ….

Yik Mun – The Famous Tanjung Malim Pau Since 1926

January 4, 2009 | 20,769 views
A much, much belated Happy New Year to all readers, and ‘avid’ followers of Motormouth From Ipoh (as if there’s any … but I enjoy being delusional. Shoot me … )

For a good 82 years (way way way older than any of you readers, I supposed), Yik Mun has been serving generations after generations of ‘pau’ lovers ….
Reeling from the extended holidays, from Xmas to New Year, and then some, here’s a short post for those (fans and detractors alike) who missed the daily dose of Motormouth’s poison.

Pau Kari Ayam (Chicken Curry Bun)

Yik Mun in Tanjung Malim, Perak, has been around since 1926. A household name serving delicious pau and simple Hainanese fare to the local community, and as time progressed, to mostly tourists who stopped by for a cuppa and some yadda (yak-fest).

One word comes to mind ; Nostalgia. Oh, and “Muhibbah”.
A corner lot on Jalan Slim River, Tanjung Malim, many purposely travel utilizing the trunk road from Sungkai towards Tanjung Malim, or exit at the Tanjung Malim toll exit, for a taste of Yik Mun’s offerings. VERY famous for their pau, and various Hainanese fare such as Roti Kahwin (bread with butter and kaya – which has since, reached a point of extinction. Yup, they seem to RUN OUT of white bread on most days, for some reason), Hainanese Chicken Chop, noodles etc, the shop has been certified HALAL, and now serves mostly Malay dishes.
Other than their famous Pau Kari Ayam, they have other fillings as well, from red bean to minced beef curry (pau kari daging). The fluffy and soft skin enveloping the rather scarce fillings makes the snack a delectable (albeit non-too-filling) one, perfect as tea-time accompaniment to a piping hot cup of Hainanese tea or coffee.
Location : 6043, Jalan Slim River, 35900 Tanjung Malim, Perak.
For those who may need more precise directions, erm, feel free to ask. But I was ‘miraculously’ transported there, courtesy of my uncle. Hence, sorry for the helplessness ….. I’m tipsy. =P
