Bak Kut Teh @ Yap Keat, Subang Jaya

November 22, 2009 | 1,211 views | 20 Comments »

Bak Kut Teh Soup

Yet another Bak Kut Teh post you ask? Don’t fret, this one’s a short and sweet post. For it’s a perfect, rainy Saturday here in Ipoh. And the cravings for something warm, hearty and wholesome can not be any greater. Sigh …. What wouldn’t I do for a serving of piping hot Bak Kut Teh in a claypot brimming with an appetizing array of pork, from the ribs to the tender and fatty cuts, to the offals (innards, intestines, whatever …) and the floating pieces of soaked, crispy yau char kwai (Chinese crullers). Ahhhh … Blissful thoughts.

Dry Bak Kut Teh

Yap Keat is a Bak Kut Teh restaurant that is not very new to the scene, yet has been operating almost under the radar (I could not find any review at all on Yap Keat, while googling for the address). Notice I mentioned ‘almost’, for the outlet prides itself from the sufficient media attention courtesy of Axian‘s (of Taste With Jason’s fame) feature on his weekly TV show. There was even a banner hanging at the front porch of the shop, a surefire tactic to lure in the doubtful crowd.

Brother Yat Restaurant @ Subang Jaya

September 15, 2009 | 2,426 views | 19 Comments »

Brother Yat Restaurant is a Chinese seafood restaurant in Subang Jaya, and situated in the most unlikely of places; in an industrial park, complete with a fascinating factory-like set up!!!

P1070188

Brother Yat’s Signature German-style Pork Knuckle

Had it not been my aunt and family in Subang Jaya who had frequented this restaurant for an impressive number of times, I highly doubt I’ll be able to locate this gem of a Chinese eatery, serving reasonably-priced dishes at a spacious and airy premise, complete with an industrial outlook. But no worries, as you’ll be able to spot the signboard pretty easily from afar, and get an inkling that something good must be brewing at the horizons judging from the number of cars parked around the parameters come lunchtime or dinner hours.

Shanghai Seafood Noodle House @ Subang Permai, USJ1

May 12, 2008 | 389 views | 5 Comments »
Wow, the old stash of photos are continuously piling up, must blog all KL food 1st, before proceeding to another round of KL food crawl someday down the line ….. Hehe !!! =P

The large bowl of seafood goodness … Luscious ….

The shop regrettably, has NO signboard, but situated right beside Restoran Mun Fong, (which serves amazing Thai dishes, will get to that later) at Taman Subang Permai in USJ1, an area which also houses Giant, Mydin, and Courts Mammoth. My relatives fondly recognize the uncle as “Ah Pek”, who had been serving his delicious seafood noodles for years at a corner coffee shop around the same area. He moved to this new shop only recently.

Shanghai Noodle (RM5)

We were given a choice of Shanghai noodle, or Beijing noodle. There are a few other options I forgot. Helpless memory. I suspect the Shanghai noodle was fried before being cooked in the addictive broth, infused with the natural sweetness of the seafood ingredients. The uncle proudly proclaims that NO MSG was added to enhance the flavour, but ONLY the freshest ingredients are chosen, in order to boil the yummy soup. Delicious.

Some other dishes Ah Pek serves at his shop

Some of us chose the Shanghai noodles, while others opted for its Beijing counterpart. The ingredients added are basically the same; various fishcakes, clams, yong tau foo, vegetables etc. The Shanghai noodle offers a more springy texture, heavier egg flavour (resembling yee mee), and definitely more savoury than the Beijing version. But the Beijing noodle in contrast, resembled “pan mee”-type of noodle, and looked and tasted healthier.

Beijing Seafood Noodle (RM5)

Do not let the unpretentious bowl of noodle fool you. The portion is considered quite huge, and substantially filling. Noticed that the uncle does serve some other dishes, such as scallops (!!), prawns, and fish, as accompaniment, to appease the seafood lovers in us.

Location : 33, Jalan USJ 1/20, Taman Subang Permai, USJ1. Not sure the specific directions, but if you know where Giant hypermarket, Mydin, and Courts Mammoth are in Subang Jaya, you will come across rows of shops on your right, right after passing by Mydin & Courts. Turn right once you come across Shell station on your right. The shop is beside Restoran Mun Fong, which is a corner shoplot facing the back.

K3K Kopitiam, SS15, Subang Jaya

March 11, 2008 | 427 views | 2 Comments »
The menu showcasing their famous snack, Homemade Plain Ketupat served with Kaya, which is actually alkaline rice dumplings (‘Kan Sui Zhung’)
2nd Food Tour this yr started late at night, at SS15 Subang Jaya. Initially plan to eat at Asia Cafe, but it was drizzling, which absolutely killed the open air ambience. Then we went to the tried and tested K3K (Kwai Sam Kee) Kopitiam, facing Subang Neway Karaoke. (Full add : A13, Jln SS15/4D, Subang Jaya)

Kwai Sam Milky Tea

The last time we went, there were not so many ppl, and the drinks and snacks were tasty and special. Their kaya is of the ‘homemade’ variety, and the menu explained the origin of the famous (supposedly) kaya from Kuala Lipis, Pahang. Back then, we tried both the bun toast, roti jala with curry chicken, and toasted white bread with butter & kaya. Even their tea and coffee was satisfying.
