Ipoh’s Old Town : Hor Hee @ Li Heng Fatt

Since I started the ball rolling with the post on Chang’s Hakka Mee with Beef in Ipoh’s old town, might as well continue the Ipoh’s Old Town series with more hidden gems. Probably not the first-line options when it comes to food hunting in old town for tourists, but still ….. these are decent outlets that deserve a mention, or if you’re ever lost on what else to eat aside from toasts and white coffee.

Bowls of Ipoh Hor Hee

From only RM2.50/USD0.70 per bowl, you’ll be getting a hefty amount of noodles in soup, brimming with an array of extra ingredients ….. from fishballs to fish cakes, and fish wantan to bean sprouts.

Last I wrote about Ipoh Hor Hee was the time I devoured a bowl at See See Heng Or Ee Fun (yeah, that’s how it’s spelled on their signboard) at Restoran Embassy in town, opposite of the former Bersatu Complex, now a college.

And NO, Hor Hee is not some funky dish resembling the guffaws of a horse’s, but instead is best explained as Ipoh’s version of Penang’s Koay Teow Th’ng, albeit with no chicken, and all fish-y ingredients. I meant, stuff like balls, cakes and dumplings; all made from fish paste.

Let’s Rock the House Down! (Tai Kar Rock Yeong Liew @ Greentown, Ipoh)

With a name as FUNKY as Let’s Rock, you’d be hard-pressed NOT to be tickled pink when discovering this most famous eatery in Ipoh is in fact, a HAWKER STALL (though not anymore) specializing in Yeong Liew (or Yong Tau Foo/Stuffed Fish Paste) and noodles.

Die-Hard Fans/Aficionados/Purveyors of good old Yeong Liew in Ipoh would be torn for choice, as the extensive alternatives to the almost world famous Fried Yeong Liew under a most legendary tree, simply named “BIG TREE FOOT” in Ipoh is delectably mind-boggling. Okay, some prefer to call these combination of noodles with stuffed fish paste as Fishball Noodles (aka Yue Dan Fun), but I’ll skip the noodles on most occasions, be it in Big Tree Foot (Dai Shu Geok), Gunung Rapat’s Kwong Hong, Tai Kar Rock (which coincidentally, is the place where I place more emphasize on the noodles more than the liew themselves) etc etc….

Ipoh Street Food – Of Hor Hee & Big Small Feet

When the night falls in Ipoh, and the werewolves/vampires/zombies come out to play (Wait … deja vu, anyone? Now that everyone on FB is Farmville-ing, probably most would have forgotten how we used to ‘bite’ each other on a daily basis, to gain experience points), that’s when the hunger pangs strike the most.

And worse still, most restaurants/coffee shops would be closed by then. Especially in the older parts of town.

Question is, do you :

a) Hide yer fangs and go home to sleep, with a growling tummy?

b) Get nasty and wallop anything in sight (not to say you’re digesting garbage, I mean those 24 hours mamak stalls, the kopitiams, or even cup noodles at 24 hrs convenience store?)? OR ….

c) Trust your friend who is an Ipoh native (aka sakai like yours truly here), and go all the way out to hunt for GOOD Ipoh Street Food in the middle of the night?

Mid-week Roast Pork Cravings

What makes a good slab of roast pork? Is it the crunchy skin, the perfectly tender and moist marinated meat? The layer of gelatinous fat underneath that crackly skin? Or even the accompanying piquant, and garlicky chili sauce?

Truth be told, back when I was a small kid, roast pork was never a favourite of mine. Nor even something that I would gladly choose when it  came to take away lunch at the chicken rice stall. I’d pick the Char Siew (BBQ marinated pork), the Siew Cheong (Pork/Offals Sausages), and even the roast chicken/duck, in that particular order. Probably more of an adult’s piece of meat, Siew Yoke (that’s roast pork in Cantonese) caters to the matured and possibly, jaded tastebuds more often than not.

On a whole different level, if you will.

Fancy Havin’ Steamed Fish Head for Breakfast? (Ngan Woh Coffee Shop @ Bercham, Ipoh)

If you’re down to Ipoh for a daytrip, overnight sensation excursion, or even if you’re a permanent resident (like yours truly) here in this exceptional, one-of-a-kind quaint town with those killer limestone caves, fat bean sprouts and (as they say …) pretty girls – you’d be scratching your head wondering where to go for breakfast.

Truth is, after the umpteenth dim sum feast in Ipoh, deep down inside, you’d be wishing for something much simpler, as tasty, but not the average wantan noodles or fish ball noodles you can get in the other states.

40 Years+ of Legacy speaks volume of its tenacious following ….

I was poisoned by a few posts before, on Ngan Woh Coffee Shop. (Click HERE, HERE or HERE for the doses of poisons). Surprisingly, throughout my stay in Ipoh, and very near to Bercham for that matter, I have never tasted, nor even heard about this shop on the main road of Bercham with an outstanding 40 years plus of history.

Goes to show that I am NOT a bulldozer who had demolished every single eatery in Ipoh. Really. ;)
