You know, when you’re out with people sharing the same UNhealthy passion of eating (read : food bloggers), one solitary stop just won’t cut it.

I mean, here we have people from all backgrounds, who are usually more occupied than the Prime Minister himself, schedules reserved for eating, eating and more eating (not with me though … I’m this poor, unwanted/ignored anomaly of a child. *sob). And the instant we connect and manage to gather, the ‘kiasu-ism-ness’ in us will start rearing its ugly head; indulging in series of gluttony+guilt+mindless indulgence.

Who’s complaining of the consecutive food stops anyway?

It took me long enough to continue this series. Picking up from the last post on Kam Fung @ Wan Chai, we shall jump to Macau where we spent the last two days of our trip at. Don’t worry, will come back to more Hong Kong food and sights in the near (or distant) future. A summary  of the trip to come in the next few days if possible, so that you can refer to all the places we ate and visited under one post.

Just yesterday, when I posted something remotely sinful on Facebook, someone actually commented about how I should go for my lipid profile test. Hmm, have I reached that low? I mean, yeah okay … so I might have been eating in a slightly more indulgent manner than most  saintly human beings (if you’re reading this, then you’re not one of those). And I sounded like one who jumps at every opportunity to binge without a care in the world.

Grandma was having a whale of a time picking on the food presented on the table. All arriving piping hot, mostly from the steamer. Not bad for one who usually craves for the greasiest, unhealthy and caloric-ridden feasts. I meant MYSELF, not her.

But I DO eat responsibly lah …. Not ALL food bloggers weigh more than a tonne each. Nor do we eat 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. I do set limits, to manageable portions. Unless the occasion calls for more than the usual intake (eg. buffets, reviews, celebrations), then I stray from the SOP.

If ever there was one.

This past 2 days have been nothing but eating, eating and more eating. Aside from the interesting Communication Module that brought much insights and revelations to the management of my current company. Naturally, I write better than I speak, for if you know me personally, you would know that I am shy, reserved and a man of few words.

Sin Hup Kee Restaurant @ Jalan Leong Sin Nam in Ipoh – A favourite with MANY Ipohans, and even the out-of-towners. Just read worldwindows’ review to have a hang of things.

Okay, so this may be the most famous Chinese restaurant in Ipoh that I have missed doing a proper review, after all these years of blogging. Aside from renowned names such as Wong Koh Kee, Mun Choong, Sun Marpoh, Soon Fatt, Peng Tau and Hoong Tho, Sin Hup Kee is probably one of the better hidden gems in Ipoh; a hit amongst the local diners yet not as mainstream nor lapped up by the hungry wolves of the media.

That being said, Sin Hup Kee (SHK) opened a branch in Puchong back in April of 2010. I retract my statement earlier. So they HAVE gone mainstream now?

A pale shadow of its old self, Lorong Panglima (fondly remembered as Concubine Lane, or Yi Lai Hong in Cantonese) is still attracting the shutterbugs and foodies until this very day.

I always tell my friends, relatives, or readers who took the effort and time to send mails to me (hehe, if you insist …) that the BEST place to start a food run in Ipoh, has to be Old Town. No, NOT the Old Town White Coffee outlets that have mushroomed everywhere, but the area aptly named as old town, yet actually without a clear definition of its perimeters and deserving Heritage status. Although somewhere somehow, half a million ringgit is being pumped to spiff up Concubine Lane, the infamous lane of Lorong Panglima with a rich and interesting history behind its moniker.

Wong Koh Kee Restaurant @ Concubine Lane in Old Town – With close to eight decades of legacy, this traditional Chinese style of ‘chu char’ restaurant is still standing strong, attracting the working crowd on a daily basis.

Truth is, the lane was notorious as an opium haunt, aside from the widely-believed raunchy stories of keeping the mistresses in the now-dilapidated two-storeys pre-war buildings lining both sides of the very narrow lane. As claimed by Wong Koh Kee, the 90-years old retired owner of Wong Koh Kee Restaurant in an article featured in The Star (read the article HERE) – “A story that goes round is that opium smokers would always say they are going to their mistresses instead of to the opium den when asked by friends” he noted.

On a personal note; it does not matter whether this lane was packed with sleazy activities or not back in the olden days. People from all walks of life come to Concubine Lane for a very different reason now; Eating at Wong Koh Kee Restaurant …. Read the rest of this entry »
