Sunday’s Best for Brunch – Ben’s General Food Store @ Publika

December 11, 2011 | 16,917 views

Selection of Salads, Pastas & Cakes

Breakfast & Brunch @ Ben's General Food Store

Slowly, but surely …. I would have written more food posts filed under Publika than any other food experiences from shopping malls in the Klang Valley.

Not to indicate that the choices are of splendid varieties, or the food being exceptionally noteworthy. But the lack of human traffic (depending on the time of visit, okay … don’t say I did not warn you. Go on weekend mornings, if possible), the artsy-fartsy atmosphere coupled by the sheer delight in finding street foods … wait, make that AFFORDABLE street foods under one roof (Eat Food Village), and you have a winning combination.

Oh, what if you crave for something slightly upmarket than the yam rice, chili pan mee and Hokkien mee? Then try Ben’s General Food Store @ Ben’s Independent Grocer. A deli-cum-restaurant serving all day meals; but staggered selections for different meals. Read the rest of this entry »

The Salad Bar @ Damansara Uptown – Indulgence Can Be Good, Sometimes

March 11, 2011 | 11,984 views

*Read the original article in its printed form published in the March edition of the lifestyle magazine; I.M. – Only RM3.50 at your favourite bookstore. Go grab a copy now, for punchy articles like no other. Seriously.

Abundance of Crunchy Lettuce

If you’re screaming and running away in agony from the sight of fresh, healthy greens, then SHAME on you!

The dust has settled, after some serious bouts of bingeing. First it was Christmas, then the New Year beckoned with more merry-making, then Chinese New Year came and left a trail of devastation …. piling on the unsightly pounds where the sun doesn’t shine. No thanks to the endless supplies of new year cookies, rounds of ‘Lou Sang’ and then there would be the senseless nights of mahjong + groundnuts + beer.

Intoxicating ensemble of sins and gluttony.

Spicy Salad

Spicy Salad – Look at the abundance of sunflower seeds!

But then again, salvation comes at the right moment. Salad Bar in Damansara Uptown has actually been around for one year; almost exactly. This charming, no-frills outlet prides on their creation of colourful and tasty salads without compromising on the flavours and of course, nutrition. So much so that we found our way back again and again after the initial visit ….. Read the rest of this entry »

Sushi Tei @ Tropicana City Mall, Petaling Jaya

Sushi Tei @ Tropicana City Mall

Feast from the East – Spread of Japanese dishes at Sushi Tei; an array of old and new creations

Sushi King, Genki Sushi (defunct?), Sakae Sushi, Yo! Sushi (gone with the wind …), Sushi Groove, Sushi Zanmai and Sushi Tei. Sushi outlets; or rather, Japanese eateries with a fast food concept – the wondrous invention of kaiten belt sushi, have been blooming all over Malaysia these past few years. About a decade or so ago, Sushi King was THE place to be.

Reasonably-priced Japanese fares, pork-free, easily accessible, and plates of sushi from RM2/USD0.70 onwards sounded like music to the ears. Until, the many contenders came to the scene. And comparison breeds discontent, as many have been disappointed by Sushi King’s lacklustre servings of Japanese cuisine, or whatever’s left of it.
