Motormouth From Ipoh – Malaysian Food & Travel

*Travel Blitz will be a new series of posts on Motormouth From Ipoh; highlighting interesting food and travel bits from all over Malaysia. This coincides with the surge of travelling lately, and serves as a platform to channel Motormouth’s scattered thoughts and ramblings.

#1 – This shot was taken from the Signal Hill Observatory Tower in the centre of Kota Kinabalu; on Jalan Bukit Bendera. Nearby landmarks include Suria Sabah and Gaya Street.

When it’s time to purge the blues away, best way is to dig deep into the archives and scour for one travel post to return one reassuring smile over this jaded face. Although this time around I don’t have to, with backlogs piling up all over the place.

Kota Kinabalu; the capital of Sabah has never failed to fascinate me. This being my third visit to the town, and yet I’m still discovering something share-worthy every time. My last visit to KK was around June last year, and this time around I was introduced to one very famous Italian restaurant in town, a Chinese curry laksa on Jalan Gaya that’s crowded during breakfast hours, and the magnificent sunset painting the skies with a brilliant hue of gold ….. Don’t miss the first chapter – Filipino Market, Grand Borneo Hotel, Imperial Boutec Hotel & Restoran Getaran Jiwa ….

Roti Kahwin – Literally translated to ‘Marriage Bread’; this is the classic combination of slices of bread sandwiching butter and kaya (egg + coconut jam), either toasted or without. A holy matrimony indeed; and this one at Fook Yuen far surpasses my expectation (or lack thereof)

Ask any tourist to Sabah on what not to be missed, and darn sure they would proclaim SEAFOOD! Lots and lots of seafood; coming in at cheap and not-so-cheap categories nowadays. Gone were the times when we used to feast on fresh seawater fishes couriered over by my uncle who worked in Labuan. The Seven Star Grouper, Tiger Grouper, Mouse Grouper (all direct translations from their Chinese names) and even fresh cod arrived in abundance; timely for the reunion dinner come Chinese New Year. Imagine the relatives had run out of idea on how to cook the fishes aside from steaming them; and we ended up having curry cod instead.

#1 – Gorgeously fresh, plump prawns with orange-hued shells grilled with minimal marinade, topped slightly with a dollop or two of spicy sambal (chili paste pounded with spices) before being served.

And then the wind changed directions; gently swayed to these droolworthy posts from Kota Kinabalu, Sabah. What was I thinking? Hong Kong, Ipoh, KL, and now Sabah?! Yup, a matter of time before I myself get caught up in confusion on where I actually wake up in the morning.

The last 30 days have been hectic; to say the least. Almost immediately after the Hong Kong/Macau escapade (a timely one, I might add … for the past 6 months were trying times, seriously), I was thrown on a plane to Singapore for a short 2 days excursion. And on the very next day I embarked on the customary Ipoh pilgrimage (read this, this, this, this and especially this for an idea on how 2 full days can be squeezed dry with good time management), before jumping back to the fray. Not for long though, as duty calls and had to travel eastward for a rushed 3 days in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah …
