Return of the Missing “Roti Telur” @ Goodshed

September 26, 2010 | 6,097 views

Roti Telur from the Past

And we heaved a sigh of relief? (Okay, maybe just me, since the rest were just virgins to the roti telur experience at Goodshed)

Okay, so it was WMW back then who posted a review on her favourite roti telur (roti means bread, in this case refers to the Indian flatbread, a staple breakfast for many in Malaysia) stall in Ipoh; by the name of Goodshed Restaurant.

Good WHAT?! Yeah … that was exactly how I reacted initially. Then slowly realizing that this shack of a Indian-Muslim (popularly known as ‘mamak’) eatery is directly opposite the cargo terminal of Ipoh.

And then I started to fall for the roti telur here. Fluffy serving of golden egg omelette wrapped inside a thin and crisp layer of dough (or the roti canai), with chopped bits of caramelized onions for added fragrance, texture and sweetness.

Roti Canai Maker @ Goodshed

After a hiatus of 6 months, they finally reopened almost immediately after Hari Raya earlier this month

Lo and behold, as they say; good things don’t last. And for the past half year or so, Goodshed was out of business!!!! I was devastated, knowing that I lost a very good place for a leisure breakfast. Usually this place was my top pick when I had to eat alone in the morning before settling my business at the terminal opposite of this shack.

But thankfully, someone from the All About Ipoh page commented that they were closed only temporarily, and should reopen before the end of the year. And yes, almost immediately after Raya, Goodshed reopened their doors for business. And darn it’s about time ……

Bismillah Restoran @ Taiping – 110 Years of Legacy

June 16, 2010 | 10,643 views

Bismillah Taiping Since 1932

An old favourite of many in Taiping, and from places beyond …. Bismillah Restoran on Main Road (Jalan Taming Sari) should be enlisted as a UNESCO World Heritage Building!

Midweek Blues anyone? Or plain reeling from the late night footie matches on the telly, or down at your favourite watering hole? Here’s something to sober you up …..

A perfectly simple, MALAYSIAN breakfast at one of the coolest town (in every sense of the word) in Malaysia; Taiping.

Daging Itam (Rendang Beef)

Daging Itam (a type of dark, fiery and robust spiced Beef dish) RM2.50/USD0.70 per portion.

Bismillah Restoran in Taiping is a century’s old establishment, and has been around at this same building for close to 80 years now. Yes, count them, EIGHT DECADES of legacy.

Famous for their Roti Canai, and also serving Roti Telur, Thosai, Nasi Briyani, and the usual ‘mamak’ (Indian-Muslim) fares, this charming eatery should not be mistaken for that famous Bismillah Cendol on Jalan Barrack, although they are sharing the same name … Read the rest of this entry »

1Malaysia Breakfast in A Small Town

April 24, 2010 | 6,068 views

IF you have to vote for ONE particular Malaysian breakfast of choice, to be eaten everyday of the week, and to represent the concept of 1Malaysia-ness, which would it be?

Curry Noodles

A sinful, creamy and spicy bowl of curry noodles (in this case, it was “kuey teow”, but unlike Ipoh’s “sar hor fun”, the noodles resembled Thai’s version of rice noodles), cockles, chicken, bean sprouts and potatoes.

Roti Canai with Sambal & Dhal Curry

A fluffy, thick, yet crispy at the sides with slight charring piece de resistance of Roti Canai. Served with the ingenious combination of sambal sardin, dhal curry, and curry gravy.

Nasi Lemak in Banana Leaf

OR a dainty portion (so you can wallop more than one pack?) of meticulously wrapped Nasi Lemak in banana leaf, with a dollop of anchovies with sambal, a not-so-conventional piece of salted fish, and half a boiled egg.

Breakfast in Kampar, Tapah or Tanjung Malim?

August 31, 2009 | 22,074 views
Happy Merdeka everyone !!! A little late, but better be late than never, right? A rather eventful journey back from KL moments ago, with a 10 cars pile-up on the highway heading north, creating a helluva ruckus, mainly from the slowed down vehicles no thanks to the over-eager and caring crowd (read : nosy), and the traffic on the opposite side that’s heading south snaking from Ipoh all the way to the accident scene at around Tapah.
Goes to show how united we Malaysians are, especially in such dire situations (or interesting, depends on which side of the fence you’re on), as people from all walks of life, from the young ‘rempits’ to the old-timers, we never failed to come to a halt on the roads, and express our ‘concern’ towards such unfortunate incidents befalling others. 1Malaysia indeed ….
