Yee Heong Restaurant – Comfort Food @ Bandar Puchong Jaya

October 25, 2013 | 7,954 views

Claypot Bak Kut Teh

Claypot Bak Kut Teh @ Yee Heong Restaurant, Bandar Puchong Jaya – To shave off whatever glimmer of guilt from the feast, we opted for lean cuts of pork instead.

Bak Kut Teh (BKT) outside of Klang may sound sacrilegious. But not necessarily, if you know where to find. Puchong has one outlet named Yap Chuan that serves incredible dry bak kut teh, while Sungei Way’s Ah Sang and Subang’s Ah Ping are both worthy contenders to the throne. I can’t vouch for Kepong’s outlets as those remain as territory uncharted, but Jalan Ipoh’s outlets were not to my liking.

Now, now … it’s relatively hard to grade the BEST bak kut teh in every sense of the word, as some prefer the broth to be extremely thick, robust and flavourful from the herbs and pork, while others like their  BKT lighter, peppery and not loaded with chunky, fatty cuts of pork.

It’s Friday, and if you are drafting meal plans for this weekend, consider making a beeline for some of the better ‘dai chow’ (Chinese style of dishes with rice) restaurants in Puchong.

On Being Motormouth & Savouring Delights from Bentong @ Choy Hi Restaurant, Puchong Jaya

May 31, 2013 | 12,428 views

Kong Sai Tau Fu Pok

Kong Sai-style Stuffed Beancurd Pouch with Minced Meat & Fish Paste (RM12/USD3)

Writing anonymously behind this ‘Motormouth veil’ has granted me immunities; escaping from awkward moments of being recognized when religiously snapping photographs (it’s a mental illness, supposedly) of the same plate of noodles or inducing crazed stares from passerby when lying belly first on the ground while shooting a flower, fungi or a bug.

But of course, out of these five-odd years of continuously feeding you with my doses of sumptuous poisons, there were those infrequent times when the random uncle/auntie manning the stall reacted in unpredictable ways.

I got reprimanded. Shooed away. Scolded. Laughed at. Ignored. Yet, I was happy about it. This burning, indomitable spirit of a ghost writer.

Somewhere, somehow … things ran slightly off track. And I guess, something’s gotta give. It’s a delicate balance of being myself vs this brash, forever-hungry Motormouth.

Chiang Rai Style Restaurant @ Puchong Jaya – An Almost Flawless Solution

June 21, 2012 | 17,290 views

Thai Fried RiceThai Style Fried Rice (RM7/USD2.30 for small portion) – With prawns, squid, eggs, onions and stalks of mustard greens; served with a piquant and slightly tangy condiment of chopped garlic and bird’s eye chillies in a sweet-spicy chili sauce.

Thai cuisine has almost always never failed me. Especially in times of dire cravings and turbulent climates. You know what I mean.

This inconspicuous restaurant in Puchong came into the radar not too long ago, when we dropped by Mek-T for some good old Terengganu classics. The former Mek-T, I might add. They have since ceased operations under further notice. What a waste.

Chiang Rai Style Restaurant. Guess the signboard cleared things up explicitly; a northern Thai cuisine specialist within a neighbourhood dominated by Chinese restaurants (Leong Ya Indah, Kajang Sup Pedas and various ‘dai chow’ outlets)? Right on. Read the rest of this entry »

MYVG – Contemporary Vegetarian Cuisine @ Bandar Puteri Puchong

April 18, 2011 | 11,195 views

Dipping the Satay into Chunky Peanut Sauce

A full bowl of chunky peanut sauce with a light sprinkle of sesame seeds on top; but if this was vegetarian … then are you game for the Satay?

Like a recurring nightmare, this would be the official third post in a row centering around wholesome, healthier foods. Talk about a change will do you good huh?

This was incidental. Wait, could be accidental, since without my GPS, we got lost somewhere in Bandar Puteri Puchong. Or wherever this place was. Initially wanted to do Super Kitchen Chili Pan Mee all over again for dinner, with the sick intention of burning the roof of the mouth and sweating buckets before calling it a day.

Then the ever reliance on modern device took a drastic stab at reality. Without the device, I could not make heads or tails of the whole area. Ended up further away than desired, and this vegetarian restaurant was the only place that was brimming with life. Seriously.

Super-Lazy-Post of Super Kitchen’s Chilly Pan Mee

January 17, 2011 | 9,091 views

Dry Chili Pan Mee @ Super Kitchen

The combination that works wonders; before the addition of the dry chili flakes/paste – A MUST when it comes to Chilly Pan Mee in KL.

And I am drained. Weekend just flew by before I could even catch my breath. And it doesn’t help that I was suffering from an extreme case of caffeine-withdrawal this morning. Wait, that took almost half my day away, and I was lying in bed with a throbbing headache and utter frustration that my Sunday’s half gone ……. But of course, the second half of the day was good. But let’s leave that story to another day.

Dry Chili Flakes

If you’re feeling like tormenting yourself, or taking up the challenge to a new level, feel free to gulp down on the dry chili paste. Scoop all you want onto your bowl of pan mee (flat flour noodles), but take heed of this advice; remember to test the waters. You don’t wanna be screaming in agony come the next morning in the loo …..

And I have only tasted Kin Kin’s version of the famed chili pan mee back when they opened a branch in Pandan Indah sometime back in 2008. However, that was a pathetic experience as the noodles tasted bland and the chili paste was too salty instead of rightfully spicy. So when this opportunity to try Super Kitchen‘s version (in Puchong, no less), I had my initial qualms. But was the excursion proven to be worthy or was it a waste of time?

Puchong Yong Tau Fu @ Batu 14 – And I’m Sold …

March 23, 2010 | 17,665 views

I am a sucker for good Yong Tau Foo, or stuffed fish paste, especially those darn-crispy ones (plastic in oil or not, who cares? It’s a myth anyway). Read my post on Ipoh’s famous Big Tree Foot‘s version – my personal top pick for good YTF, or Yeong Liew, as we call them here in Ipoh, for a better idea. Yup, seldom do I opt for the boiled YTF served in soup, unless the variety’s mind-boggling, like Gunung Rapat’s Kwong Hong.

Puchong Yong Tau Foo Meal with Rice

White rice served with fresh, succulent pieces of fish paste stuffed on the spot, and the compulsory duo of chili sauce, and sweet sauce.

Previous experience with Ampang’s most famous (yet over-rated) Yong Tau Foo got me wary of trying another piece of YTF in the Klang Valley ever again. Until, I was brought over to Puchong Yong Tau Fu, tucked hidden in some enclave at the older portion of Puchong. Situated at a junction connecting Jalan Puchong Batu 14 (14th Miles?) and Jalan Tembusu, opposite of a Chinese school named Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan Han Ming. (Map to come at the end of the post)

Yap Chuan Bak Kut Teh @ Puchong – BEST Dry Bak Kut Teh?

December 9, 2009 | 15,634 views

Bak Kut Teh is a wonder in itself. Best to be served for breakfast, the “Meat Bone Soup” (literally translated) also qualifies as a substantial lunch, or even a most heart warming dinner. How ’bout serving it round the clock, I was left wondering? Is there any place in Malaysia that serves Bak Kut Teh (BKT for short) for 24 hours? Now that would be a pleasant substitute to ‘mamak’ food after those glitzy & glam partying hours.

Yap Chuan Young Boy Chef

Wait, doesn’t that boy in the picture look somewhat familiar? (Hop over to this post and tell me I’m not seeing things)

You get presented with a bubbling hot cauldron of the most carnivorous of picks; The ribs, the large and small bones (ask BKT aficionados and you’ll learn), the 3 layered-meat (pork belly), the offals (innards, or spare parts, if you would), and an assorted amalgam of optional sides – The beancurd sheets (Foo Chuk), the enoki mushrooms (Kam Cham Koo), some with lettuce, and some even with …. chicken feet !!!
