Genting Highlands Food #101 – Go Eat @ Gohtong Jaya Instead !!!

June 25, 2010 | 1,343 views | 18 Comments »

Statue of Liberty @ First World Genting

The Statue of Liberty wept for the likes of us; tourists paying lots of moolah ($$) for pathetic food … who am I kidding? Genting Highlands = Mecca of Good Food ?!!

Okay people, Friday rants again. The week flew by without any fanfare, conflicts, tantrums nor warfare. Good news, coming from someone who works in a volatile working environment; filled with last minute decisions, exams (yes, at this time and age!), pinnacle of bureacracy (can’t complain, given the nature of my job) and unplanned travels.

Speaking of the devils, I still need to work tomorrow on a lovely Saturday morning. Shucks right? Especially when it’s not in IPOH we are talking about, but somewhere down south. Maybe I’ll grab myself a piece of Tau Sar Pneah, or an overfried piece of fried chicken from Gulam Rasul. :)

Crispy Baked Pork Belly

Crispy, salty, sweet and very very addictive plate of thinly-sliced ‘fah lam yuk’ (pork belly meat) deep-fried and coated in a caramelized sauce. (RM15.00/USD4.50)

Since I am in no mood to do proper food reviews, let me share my food-hunting experiences (or lack thereof) in Genting Highlands sometime back in May. Word of advice …. do NOT put high hopes in discovering feasts of gastronomic proportions up in the highlands. Yeah, you may be feeling ‘on top of the world‘ or ‘dining with the angels from the sky above‘ … but unless you’re prepared to pay astronomical rates for a culinary indulgence, you’d be better off starving yourself or pray that you win enough chips for an abalone or two, or a meal at The Olive.

Read how we started off with a bang in Gohtong Jaya (the town before you reach the peak), then things started to go downhill from there ….. gastronomically speaking, of course …. CONTINUE READING THE REST OF THIS ENTRY »

Michelangelo’s Pizzeria @ Ipoh – Celebrations

January 7, 2010 | 6,131 views | 71 Comments »

UPDATED AUGUST 2010 !!!

Since Michelangelo’s Pizzeria (www) changes their menu and specials of the week/month from time to time, this post will be constantly being updated with the latest promotions from Ipoh’s most beloved pizzeria, specials of the week (they change at blistering speed, so you’d better check the latest updates on this page) and maybe a contest or two in the future.

Great Pizzas from Michelangelo's Pizzeria

Elevated on those huge but hollowed Heinz tomato paste cans, the pizzas at Michelangelo’s Pizzeria are never short of fresh, quality ingredients.

Currently, Michelangelo’s Pizzeria is offering a special MEATBALL Pizza (scroll down for a better look), with Italian style of chunky and dense balls of pork laced with herbs and spices, generously thrown on the dough with melted mozzarella and fresh tomato paste. If you’re a meatball lover, you CAN’T give this a miss !!! For limited time only!

Meatball Pizza + Chicken of the Sea

Meatball Pizza & Chicken of the Sea (Tuna, Onions, Pineapples)

Good thing about dining at Michelangelo’s Pizzeria is that you can mix and match your pizzas, and the ingredients that go onto the base. Select up to two choices for each pizza (don’t worry, you won’t be paying an arm and a leg … unless you decide to order 4 varieties in ONE pizza, then Michael might come at you with a cleaver!) so you can taste different varieties without having to order excessively.

Bacon & Egg, The HOG

The Hog (Italian Pork Sausages, Smoked Streaky Bacon, Virginia Ham) and Bacon & Eggs

The “Chicken of the Sea” or tuna, onions and pineapple pizza is also a special item NOT featured permanently in the menu. Though with much persuasion (possibly a wink or two), you can try to coerce them into inserting the combination into the permanent menu.

And you really should, for the chunks of briny tuna with loads of chopped onions and cubed pineapples made a beautiful coalition; enough to send one into a seafood frenzy.

My personal favourite pizza from the list? The HOG of course. With an overload of PORKY goodness; bacons, sausages and hams, how can one resist this barbaric/carnivorous creation?!! Pray they do not take this out from the menu, for if you’re in dire need for protein, THIS IS IT. The Bacon And Eggs pizza is also a terrific combination, with overeasy eggs cracked on top of the layers of cheese, then topped with smokey streaked bacons.

Creamy Chicken Stroganoff

Spicy Creamy Chicken Stroganoff – A fiery twist to the classic

Bacon Wrapped Jalapeno with Cheese

Bacon-wrapped Jalapeno Pepper stuffed with Cheese – Be prepared to breathe fire ……

Other specials currently on the menu include the spaghetti topped with creamy Chicken Stroganoff, but this one has a fiery kick to it. If you’re good with spicy food, then give their Grilled Bacon-wrapped Jalapeno Pepper with Cheese a try. Want even more kick? Try the peppers WITH the seeds intact!!!! (Ask for Meg to please your sadistic palate)

Craving for some REAL Pizzas?

December 11, 2009 | 3,236 views | 71 Comments »

Like a breath of fresh air, Michelangelo’s Pizzeria will soon be gracing the stagnant, almost mundane food and beverage scene in Ipoh, promising quality American-style pizzas at affordable prices. Finally injecting some pizzazz to the unbelievably limited number of choices when it comes to eateries serving pizzas in Ipoh. We have Pizza Hut … and erm, that’s it. No Shakey’s, no Domino’s, no Papa John’s nor even Canadian Pizza. But of course, not including the pricier options at Brewster’s, SSTC (They did serve a wacky spaghetti pizza, to which I have yet to write about) or even Italia Mia (Last I checked they did not serve them. Do they now?)

Michael the Boss

Yeah, that should be Michelangelo’s, spelled differently. But who cares right? In his most joyous, devil-may-care attitude, I doubt Michael himself mind had I spelled his restaurant the other way ’round!

Yet to officially open for business, Michelangelo’s Pizzeria is expected to be up and running in a week or two’s time. Hopefully by Christmas, or prior to that. To appease that craving for some good ol’ REAL quality pizzas, in Michael’s own words, you must try Michelangelo’s painstakingly stretched, tossed, or rolled pizza dough from good quality flour (no idea what the name was, sorry), topped with the freshest and best of ingredients. No frozen sausages, generic pepperoni/salami, nor minuscule layers of mozzarella.

Preparation of Pizza

Having a whale of a time himself stretching them flat on the working counter, tossing them with much gusto and liberally throwing on ingredients as he desired …. Now that’s unorthodox.

Azuma Japanese Restaurant @ Queensbay Mall (Revisit)

November 30, 2009 | 920 views | 20 Comments »

Penang food has never ceased to amaze me. Or any self-respecting foodie for that matter. The abundance of hawker stalls selling famous street food at dirt-cheap prices (ok, maybe not ALL but still, a lavish meal of everything will never cost you an arm or a leg), the flourishing number of restaurants and cafes on the island, and not to mention the wide array of cuisines, a perfect epitome of REAL 1Malaysia concept, whereby you’ll see people of all races hanging out at Mamak stalls more often than not.

Zaru Soba @ Azuma Queesbay Mall

But pardon me for the shorter than usual post today, for I was stuck in a most horrendous jam on the highway yesterday evening. For a good 6 hours on the expressway, traveling southbound from Penang back to Ipoh. Needless to say, the temptation to skip work could not get any greater. :)

Anyway, I wrote about Azuma Japanese Restaurant @ Queensbay Mall before, the much-relished, celebration feast after the much dreaded 5 days of imprisonment on an island known as Langkawi. So let me just share some photos of the food we had this time around, for a quick lunch in Queensbay Mall.

Pizza Hut Trumped Shakey’s …. BIG time !!!

January 10, 2009 | 234 views | 15 Comments »
Not too long ago, Shakey’s Pizza was opened in Tesco Pengkalan, in Pasir Puteh. Memories of happy childhood times at Shakey’s at BB Plaza in KL (which has since, ceased operation …) flooded me the moment I saw the sign belonging to Shakey’s Pizza, indicating “Opening Soon” over at Tesco Pengkalan. Yippee! Least we have another option, other than the giant conglomerate (THE Hut) dominating the pizza scene in Ipoh ….
And so we went for lunch, one fine day …..

Watery (dunno) chicken or mushroom soup …..
We should’ve heeded the hint before entering. Peak lunch hour, with value-for-money sets being offered, yet the place was near empty. Solitude’s fine, for a quiet lunch, yet eating in a fast food settlement without the clanking of cutleries, and rapid flow of patrons, food and staff zooming in and out, plus a boisterous crowd, just ain’t gonna cut it.
The soft & soggy Parmesan Bread Sticks …..
As there were four of us (KYT, TallGal, Mr Z and yours truly), it was a no-brainer on how to order. Much alike The Hut’s set meals, there are sets for one, for two, four and six (I think, couldn’t be bothered to check, really). We had the set for four, which came with the complimentary (compulsory’s more like it!) soups, bread sticks, soft drinks and of course, pizzas.
Pizza #1

Pizza #2

The soup was tasteless, diluted, and starchy. The bread sticks were soft, and when dipped into the cold soup (yup, it was FAR from piping hot!), became soggy. And the soft drinks were diluted and tasted nothing like what they’re supposed to. REALLY! Suspected they add water, or lots of ice into them. Hmm, but can the pizzas save the day?
Obviously, judging from the pics above, no. HELL NO !! The cold pizzas, with an unidentifiable cheese topping (it was hard, tasteless, and tasted artificial), and sparse ingredients (even the chicken sausage and filament sticks were horrible), successfully made the pizzas = INedible. It was THAT bad, I did not bother to jot down the names, nor keep the receipts.
But the meal roughly costed us RM50+, and we vowed never to return. Whatever happened to Shakey’s Pizza? I still remember way back then, in KL, the Shakey’s was so good, with generous portions of ingredients, oozing cheese, and different flavours from Pizza Hut. Sigh …..

The Other Pizza Experience

Good things are meant to be shared? Canned chicken soup, but warm, and satisfying

Good service, & attentive staff bringing the all the condiments you’d probably need

Fresh from the oven – Parmesan bread sticks

Hawaiian Supreme

Hawaiian Tuna
And the CNY special : Golden Fortune Cheese Crowns (or something ….)
Tried and tested, among all the Pizza Hut outlets in Ipoh, the one in Ipoh Garden South serves the BEST pizzas among them. Just brace yourself for the wait on certain days, as they’re short-staffed at times.
Hot pizzas, with crispy crusts, and melted, oozing mozzarella cheese, as well as all the parmesan cheese powder and Tabasco sauce you could ever want, I felt right at home here.
Of course, Ipoh ONLY has Pizza Hut, and the tragic Shakey’s to satiate our pizza cravings. This, in terms of fast food and affordability, not including those pizzas from other restaurants. We do not have Canadian Pizza, or even Domino’s, for that matter. Pathetic, no?
(P/S : Gratitude & accolades to KYT+Mr Z+FCOE for the FREE lunch !!!)
So, do you have any pizza experience(s) to share?
