Restoran Kakak @ Taiping

March 12, 2010 | 16 views | No Comments »

Since I haven’t been writing much about outstation travels around Perak, allow me to get back into the groove, and share a simple post about this restaurant (or rather, coffee shop?) that serves Taiping’s version of chicken noodle soup for breakfast. The name of the shop? Restoran Kakak.

Chicken Noodle Soup @ Kakak, Taiping

One glance and you’d be forgiven for thinking this is another bowl of “Kai See Hor Fun” from Ipoh, or even a toned down version of Penang’s Koay Teow Th’ng.

The name of the shop is actually “Jia Jia” (literally translated to Every Family), but when converted to Malay (or English), it becomes Kakak. :)

A little misleading, for a traditional Chinese coffee shop to be named as such?

Going Rounds in Pusing of Perak

February 21, 2010 | 513 views | 20 Comments »

I have not written about food in Pusing (a small town in the state of Perak, very near to Batu Gajah, Seri Iskandar, Bota etc) for a very long time. Not that we did not travel to the town often, but more so because of an unexplainable reason, one that forbids me from telling. Huh? Yeah ….. something related to our work, if you get my drift.

Nostalgic Coffee Shop @ Pusing

To refresh your memory, you might want to read about the Ming Feong Restaurant (Sang Har Meen) experience back in 2008, followed by a short detour to Pusing for some delectably classic Nyonya Kuih after a seafood feast in Sitiawan.

Char Siew Wan Ton Mee

I have gotten some rather good recommendations from a constant reader of Motormouth From Ipoh (who is from Pusing himself) constantly ‘barraging’ me with good eats here and there. Though I have yet to find the time for a revisit, hence I’ll just share some simple hawker fares in Pusing which we had few months back. Okay, maybe HALF a year back, for all I can remember.

Claypot Fish & Bullfrogs @ Fook Seng, Slim River

December 15, 2009 | 583 views | 32 Comments »

If you somehow have not heard of Slim River before, I don’t blame you. Instead of imagining a most constricted, eroded and (I’ll be damned) polluted river running across the wilderness, Slim River is in fact, a small town to the south of Perak. Constantly on the rise, Slim River seems to be developing rapidly in tandem with Tanjung Malim’s flourishing industries, for I have heard of houses costing as much as (even more than) Ipoh’s landed properties.

Claypot Grouper Fish @ Fook Seng, Slim River

Situated about 100km from Ipoh, Slim River can be reached using the expressway (PLUS – North-South Highway), about an hour or so of driving south of Ipoh. Coming from Kuala Lumpur’s direction, Slim River is about an hour plus as well. So you know where to go for a good bite if you’ve already been there, or done that. Or worse, disappointed by the atrocious Halal pau. These places are within the same district in southern Perak, so you can either go for a full-blown food crawl, tea break of yam puffs at Pun Chun, then pigging out on the Choy Kee’s pork knuckle, followed by a taste of Yik Mun’s Chicken Curry Pau.

Not sure if you realize this fact, but I never wrote about food in Slim River before, reasons being – (a) I do not know where to start with, and (b) There isn’t any MUST-TRY food in Slim River either. To which I beg to differ now.

Tanjung Tualang Prawns @ Luen Fong Restaurant

November 25, 2009 | 1,535 views | 48 Comments »

Tanjung Tualang Prawns

The abundance of roes was astounding! Pity Mr Prawn’s head also punctured by the pressure! ;)

To get you along the mid-week blues (though it’s a much, much revered 4 days working week), let me share another famous Chinese seafood restaurant in Tanjung Tualang of Perak. No doubt you’ve read about my crustacean-walloping experience back in August of 2008. What? You mean you forgot to read the Lung Seng Restaurant review, when we had half a kg of prawns cooked Kam Heong style, while another 500g in lots of crunchy Nestum? Go read now, wipe your chin dry, and come back again.

Okay, done? Tanjung Tualang houses so many seafood restaurants, you’d be thinking where to go for some simpler hawker food. Really. They’re all around the wet market of Tanjung Tualang, built in the midst of the town itself. Another restaurant that has been around for many years now, and with a strong following of its own, is Luen Fong Restaurant – An air-conditioned corner lot next to Sun Mee Fong (sp?), another popular choice amongst the tourists. Though I have heard from a friend, stating that the locals do NOT patronize these erm … tourist-traps. Instead, they go to lesser known brands, an example being Yau Kee (again, not sure of the spelling).

Restoran Tomyam Hasnah @ Venice of Perak, Lumut

October 20, 2009 | 741 views | 29 Comments »

Udang Goreng Tepung

Udang Goreng Tepung (Fried Prawns with Batter)

A break from the Bali travel posts (to avoid this blog from transforming to a Bali Food Blog, instead of a Malaysian one), and allow me to bring you over to the west coast of Perak, to a place posh-ly named the Venice of Perak. Where?!!! Hop over the Dromoz for a satellite view of the aforementioned, prime location, within kilometres away from the port town of Lumut in Perak.

Tom Yam Seafood

Seafood Tom Yum – And the floating impending threats to the senses!

I do realize that I doseldom post reviews on Malay food, with the last post being the rather newly-opened Nasi Padang Simpang Tiga in Greentown of Ipoh. To make amends with regard to that fact, I’ll write about a rather recent outing to Restoran Tomyam Hasnah (thanks to Suzy for the recommendation, and for footing the bill …. =P) in Desa Manjung Raya in Lumut, Perak. This restaurant is situated along the main road of Lumut coastal highway, en route to the town of Lumut, Perak. Point of interest nearby would be the Taman Paya Bakau (Mangrove forest park), which is opened to public for free.
