Phad Thai Restaurant @ Taipan USJ – “Almost” Authentically Thai

September 23, 2011 | 31,776 views

Pineapple Fried Rice

Pineapple Fried Rice (RM9.90/USD3.30) – An aesthetically-captivating presentation in a hollowed half of a pineapple. Fluffy grains with a distinctive fragrance, fried with cubed fresh pineapple, chopped long beans, raisins and roasted cashew nuts.

And I proclaim this my current favourite haunt for no-frills, affordable Thai fares in KL/PJ. Not until after the third visit though. Second one did not count since this reckless soul forgot to take note of Phad Thai Restaurant‘s off-day and went home sorely disappointed on a Monday evening.

Actually no, we went off to Daorae which is about 100 metres away, but you get my drift. The sheer lacking in enthusiasm after preparing this glutton of a bowel to a mind-numbing, fiery Thai fest. Only to experience a gastronomic experience on a whole different spectrum; grilled meats over charcoal, kimchi, bulgogi and all.

That being said, this adamant little brat was not about to give up. Still fresh from the first eye-opening experience of a dinner consisting of a reasonably-good rendition of “Pad Thai” (Thai fried rice noodles with shrimp, egg and bean sprouts), and you know it’s fairly impossible to find one that’s just as good as Bangkok’s, we went again.

Read on for the full insight, and delicious shots you’d be forgiven for licking the screen …. Read the rest of this entry »

Inconspicuously Thai …

May 18, 2010 | 7,080 views

In the spirit of continuing the Thai-related posts (somewhat to lighten the mood, in view of the current dire state of Bangkok’s, presumably?), allow me to venture where no man has gone to before.

Okay, I’m somewhat slightly off today, after making serial rounds descending Cameron Highlands. But do read what I have to say before closing this window. Pretty please? 🙂

Thai Tom Yum Seafood

Piping hot Tom Yum Soup with Seafood, but somewhat lacking in the fiery & robust departments, and the dipping sauces at Kaneng’s.

There is this unassuming shack of a Thai restaurant (IF you can even call the place THAT!) in Bercham, situated directly opposite of Bercham primary school; SJK (C) Bercham, Ipoh. No ads, no brochures, almost zero publicity, and guess what? Even without a PROPER SIGNBOARD!!

The place is run by a couple (the husband being a local, and the wife being a Thai from Bangkok) in their 40’s, or 50’s possibly, and has been around for more than a decade! But they started the business in Ipoh Garden East (in the premise named KK Coffee Shop formerly housing the now ‘defunct’ Nakhon Pathom Thai Food), then subsequently moving to this place on Lorong Bercham 8.

Serving a mix of authentic Thai dishes such as the perennial favourite of many; Tom Yum Gung (or in this case, a mix of various seafood), Thai-style Steamed Fishes (from RM13/USD4 onwards), Thai salads (the usual Kerabu Chicken Feet, Kerabu Mango, and even glass noodles salad), fried rice (Belacan, Pineapple, Tom Yum etc) and even Pad Thai (Thai style fried rice noodles) …..  Read the rest of this entry »

Krabi/Phuket 2010 (Part 1) – Loveli Guesthouse, Phuket Street Food, Jungceylon, Fuji Japanese Restaurant

January 21, 2010 | 6,901 views

For the benefit of those who felt tormented by the incessant ramblings, long-winded nonsense (ever so common if you’re here often), and millions of words jumbled into one single post, fret not.

I’ve decided to limit the relentless ramblings for this Krabi-Phuket 2010 in review, preferably in less than 5 posts.

Which of course, may NOT be possible. 🙂

Krabi Bus Station

Krabi  Bus Station is situated at a most rural of location, not too obvious from the main roads, and reminded me of those bus stopovers in smaller towns, like Gopeng in Perak, for example.

The two-way flight from Kuala Lumpur-Krabi-Kuala Lumpur cost RM140 / USD40 per person, courtesy of Air Asia. Yeah, book early for such promotions, and erm… as cliche as this may sound; Everyone REALLY Can Fly. For your information, a bus/minivan from Penang to Krabi which takes about 9 hours will cost you about RM70 / USD20 for ONE-way. And our flight took us a mere ONE hour. Go do the Maths, then come back.

Bangkok – Best Pad Thai @ Thipsamai, Lamphu House & Khao San Road

July 21, 2009 | 5,313 views
Are you shivering in your boots yet? Had that nagging feeling deep in your guts, preparing yourself for the impending doom? Screaming NOT another MOTORMOUTH’s NEVERENDING TRAVELLING SAGA?!!! (Newbies beware…. old timers, remember the 13 chapters Hong Kong/Macau extravaganza last year? Or the 10 chapters of Hanoi On A Shoe-string Series?!)
Don’t piss your pants. Yet. For this time around, I’ve decided to show mercy upon all, and shorten my ramblings as much as possible, thus omitting the day by day posts. Saintly, am I?
Unless, of course, you wanted them. Oooh …. sadistic, aren’t we? 😉
Frying up a storm! Whipping up plates after plates of delectable, addictive Pad Thai.
Thipsamai (www) is a household name, widely acknowledged in guidebooks and on the web, as THE restaurant that serves the BEST Pad Thai in Bangkok. No joke, this one. To imagine even the locals are willing to pay 60Baht/RM6 for a plate of the undoubtedly Thailand’s most famous noodle dish. Put it simply, it’s Thailand’s answer to Vietnam’s Pho Bo, or Malaysian’s Char Kuey Teow. Or Laksa. Or Prawn Mee. (Why am I indecisive on this one?!) Read the rest of this entry »
