Shin Kee Beef Noodles Specialist

Shin Kee Beef Noodles Specialist

Would you have trusted this “beef noodles specialist”, if not for the positive reviews?

Let’s talk about beef noodles in the Klang Valley today. I have tried Soong Kee beef noodles, Lai Foong beef noodles, and Yang Kee beef noodles over at Taman OUG. But none that managed to entice me for repeated visits over the years. Except for Shin Kee beef noodles on Jalan Tun Tan Cheng Lock, a stone’s throw away from the entrance to Petaling Street … CONTINUE READING THE REST OF THIS ENTRY »

Mo Sang Kor Bak Kut Teh @ Pandamaran, Klang – Is This The Best?

July 2, 2010 | 1,193 views | 24 Comments »

And I thought I had them all. The BEST of them, so to speak. And then came the hoo-ha on a certain Klang Bak Kut Teh (bored of kept on repeating myself what Bak Kut Teh is, so read it up here on Wikipedia) that finally broke out of its mould; venturing not only out from the township of Klang with a branch in Puchong, but possibly the first Bak Kut Teh outlet to open in a food court of a major shopping complex – Hutong @ Lot 10.

(Though some might beg to differ, as Pao Xiang Bak Kut Teh have branches in One Utama, Pavilion, Centro Mall etc, and in Penang, there is a branch of BKT in shopping malls named Rou Gu Cha King or something)

Bak Kut Teh in Bowls

Mo Sang Kor Bak Kut Teh @ Pandamaran – Hokkien-style Bak Kut Teh that is thicker, darker in colour, and with a punchy, robust flavour you can’t forget after the first sip. Take that in a positive light, or vice versa.

I spied Mo Sang Kor at their Berkeley Garden branch, back when we went for a sample of Pao Xiang’s novelty of a BKT, with the pork cuts all tied up in the cooking process. I lost all hopes in BKT served in bowls (which by the way, happens to be the most traditional way of serving them, NOT in claypot … or so the die-hard, true-blue fanboys would say). Only Seng Huat; the one under the Klang bridge managed to impress, but the others have faltered.

Pandamaran Best Bah Kut Teh

Ah Xian said it’s good, the auntie could not care less in the presence of Motormouth, and wondering how the BKT feast fared? Read on …….

A Hidden Gem Named Pu Yuan

June 9, 2010 | 1,245 views | 22 Comments »

Fried Sweet Potato Flour

Skilfully fried with loads of ingredients thrown in for good measure; Pu Yuan‘s most famous noodle dish – Fried Sweet Potato Flour Noodles

This place named Pu Yuan, off Old Klang Road had me reeling once before. No, it’s nothing related to the saliva-inducing fares they serve (although in their defense, they really cook them to a magnificent degree).

We went rounds, wasting close to 20 minutes circling Old Klang Road (OKR), Jalan Kuchai Lama, then back again. We turned into the small lane right before the Jalan Kuchai Lama traffic lights on OKR, reaching the Chinese school named SJK (C) Choong Wen, but no restaurant in sight.

There was hardly even a soul wandering around the residential area surrounding the aforementioned school in the evening on a weekend. Hence, we gave up the ‘mission’ and ventured off to Nambawan instead.

Pu Yuan Inside Shop

That’s ALL of the restaurant you see in the picture above. Yes, the place can barely contain a humongous crowd, so be there early or brace the wait standing around or outside of the premise.

Knowing me, being the usual adamant (read : stubborn) self, I searched for information again on the net. And thus, I once again embraced the power of food blogs and directories, this time around we were successful. The small eatery is actually parked to the LEFT on a small lane right after turning into the archway belonging to the school. Detailed directions to come at the end of the post ….. The Famous Roti Canai Pandamaran in Klang

June 2, 2010 | 976 views | 36 Comments »

Serving the Roti Canai in Stacks

Darting across the jam-packed restaurant spanning a few lots, this ‘macha’ clearly threw all caution to the wind, oblivious to the snapping camera, daggering stares, and erm ….. matter of hygiene.

Since I was ranting on a strong contender for Ipoh’s best chapati in my previous post, kindly allow me to follow up with this restaurant tucked in the midst of a residential area in Pandamaran of Klang. I.V. Restaurant is the name of the restaurant, and there is no doubt as to what they’re famous for.

The words ‘Roti Canai Pandamaran‘ was emblazoned on the apple green signboard, proudly/patriotically flagged (literally) with our beloved Malaysia’s and the state of Selangor’s flags in an alternating manner.

Teh Tarik

Good thing was, the Teh Tarik (Frothy Pulled Milk Tea – A Malaysia’s favourite beverage) was never earth-shatteringly sweet nor reeking of condensed milk. Rather, all the beverages at I.V. Restaurant were of reasonable level of sweetness. Possibly thanks to the largely Chinese clienteles?

I first read about this comparatively-obscure Halal Indian restaurant from Criz Lai’s blog. I did not think much of it, but after a good many extravagant Klang Bak Kut Teh meal for breakfasts, one can’t help but to seek for a simpler, fuss-free (preferably meat-less) breakfast.

And was I grateful enough for reading that post from Criz …. !! CONTINUE READING THE REST OF THIS ENTRY »

Of Xiao Long Bao, La Mian & Prawn Wanton

DIN TAI FUNG RESTAURANT @ THE GARDENS

Xiao Long Bao @ Din Tai Fung

Skilfully folded, artfully crafted into an exquisite morsel of soupy delight – 18 delicate folds on the skin that can sustain the tension of a pair of chopsticks, before being rested on the porcelain spoon.

Din Tai Fung, Dragon-i and Canton-i are three household names when it comes to Chinese restaurants in Malaysia. A newer generation of chain restaurants with prominent branding, the younger crowd may not even recognize the Tai Thongs, Esquire Kitchens, and Hee Lai Tons from the days of yore.

Not to mention Sek Yuen, Hong Ngek or Yut Kee. Puzzled? You should be. Unless you’re from the Jurassic age like me. :)

Dishes @ Din Tai Fung

Clockwise from top left : A cold appetizer of various finely-julienned ingredients, Perforated hole on the XLB (Xiao Long Bao) so one can sip on the warm, delicious broth from within, The dessert named “Or Nee” or steamed yam paste, and Fish Dumplings in trios; part of the RM19.80 Value Set.

Porky Face-Off – Nambawan vs Bellygood

Belly Good vs Nambawan

The Porky Face-off Separated Miles Apart – Nambawan @ Taman Sri Manja, Old Klang Road VS BellyGood @ Sunway Mentari, PJ

First day of work this week (cool huh?) and I had already stuffed myself crazy with the astonishing array of Yong Tau Foo (Yong Liew) over at Gunung Rapat’s Kedai Kopi Kwong Hong. Seriously, if you’ve never tried their thousand and one creations, you do not know what you’re missing! And the range of beverages there, from the ultra thick Umbra juice to a bowl of sinfully refreshing Cincau (grass jelly), I swear you’d be delighted from a brunch/lunch here. We went twice in two weeks, and we’re not even working around the vicinity.

By the way, we are working in Ipoh’s ultimate treasure trove of food; Ipoh’s Old Town. So excursions to eateries elsewhere in Ipoh is a very rare phenomenon, in case you’re wondering.

Pork Burger

The 100% Home Made Pork Burger @ RM6.90/USD2. Top that, anyone?

But enough about my lunch. Burp. Let’s talk some other highly prized delights, not as universal (in Malaysia at least) and definitely something which can’t be found that easily here in Ipoh, shall we? I’m talking about PORKY GOODNESS. Yup, last week I was rambling on Klang’s Famous Bak Kut Teh and this week we divert westward (cuisine-wise) to seek for grilled pork belly and pork burgers.

Nambawan Restaurant & Cafe was brought to light after repeated doses of poisons (read : blog entries) from the food Gods over in the Klang Valley. Bellygood, on the other hand, is also known as the “Pork Lover’s Paradise” (as in their tagline), situated at Sunway Mentari, opposite of Sunway Pyramid. The charming little bistro was previously known as Wendy’s Bistro, for those who have not been visiting for quite some time.
