Kampar Food Court – Char Koay Teow Uncle On A Stool, Lou Shu Fun & Char Siew Glutinous Rice

September 24, 2010 | 26,086 views

Kampar Char Koay Teow - Uncle on Stool

Seated on a stool, at such a low height; will this affect the amount of ‘wok hei’ or strength and passion that goes into a plate of Char Koay Teow? Highly doubtful. Given the usually 30 minutes or more wait.

Friday in a Flash. This week started slow, then picked up halfway through. Yesterday we were down to Kampar, en route to Teluk Intan and subsequently Hutan Melintang. If you knew two out of the three places mentioned above, I don’t blame you. Why oh why does Hutan Melintang sound so familiar?

A case of me and my bad mouth, perhaps? Refer to the previous rants on the prawns of Tanjung Piandang and you’ll understand why. Since I only have myself to blame, I relented and embarked on this journey …. Read the rest of this entry »

A 7″ Thick Vegas Full House Burger @ Vegas Kitchen, Kampar

May 5, 2010 | 11,320 views

Vegas Full House Burger

Vegas Full House Burger (RM11.50/USD3.60) – A monstrous of a calorie-laden horror, featuring two patties (a chicken and a beef), ham and cheese, a fried egg, and loaded with greens to balance out the guilt, in a most futile manner. 🙂

Wait, before you go screaming “NOOOOOOOOOooooooooo ……….. !!!! You moved AWAY from Ipoh?!!!!“, let me clarify this. I am STILL safe and sound in the comfort of my home here in Ipoh, but the frequency of posts on food from around Perak (ie: The Teluk Intan Food Tour, Kampar’s Curry Chicken Bread and now THIS post) might be slightly disturbing, I know.

After all, those who have been following this blog since my blogspot days would have known that my work requires much travelling, hence sometimes you don’t get to read about Ipoh food in a week or more.

Vegas Kitchen with Obama Picture

Good for them, Democrats exist in Kampar of Perak?! 😉

I first read about Vegas Kitchen @ Taman Bandar Baru of Kampar (no doubt, THE most happening place to be in Kampar, perpetually packed with youngsters from UTAR (Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman) and locals around the residential areas, as well as tourists staying in Grand Kampar Hotel) from Live To Eat’s blog not too long ago.

Hence when the opportunity knocked on our doors this afternoon, we omitted the ideas of eating in Kampar market once again, nor searching high and low for food in Kampar old town. We hurried over to Bandar Baru Kampar on our way back to Ipoh, and made some rounds before stopping at Vegas Kitchen; a corner lot within spitting distance from Grand Kampar Hotel.

Kampar Curry Chicken Bread @ Kam Ling Restaurant

May 2, 2010 | 35,757 views

Happy Labour Day Malaysians! Slightly belated I know, but still, today’s a Sunday … hence the celebration continues? Or so I hope. Nothing too spectacular for us who do not work on Saturdays, so it’s a day off wasted, somehow …..

Anyway, we decided to embark on a short, day trip to Teluk Intan in the southern region of the state of Perak. I wrote about Teluk Intan only once in my blog, if I recall correctly. That was when we visited Keng Heng Coffee Shop in town for breakfast, then lunch at Lana Tea House. But of course, I neglected the urge to write about the repeated visits to the town famous for the iconic leaning tower (yup, don’t go thinking ONLY Italy has one) right smack in town centre, the incomparable Teluk Intan Chee Cheong Fun, and fresh seafood supplied by its neighbouring town of Hutan Melintang. (Read about our lunch at Men Lok Seafood @ Hutan Melintang)

Cutting Open a Curry Chicken Bun

Kam Ling Restaurant @ Kampar – With her sleeves all rolled up, clearly she was in her elements …. cutting up the gigantic Curry Chicken Bread for us, right before our very eyes. (RM22/USD6.90)

To reach the town of Teluk Intan from Ipoh, you can use a few different routes. One being our favourite Ipoh-Kampar-Kampung Gajah-Teluk Intan way, which is marginally shorter, compared to Ipoh-Tapah-Tapah Road-Teluk Intan, and miles faster than the Bidor-Teluk Intan route. The journey takes about one and a half hour from Ipoh to Teluk Intan, slightly longer if the roads are plied with lorries and other vehicles, which is common on weekdays.

Curry Chicken Bun @ Kam Ling, Kampar

A portion can easily serve four savages on a roll ……. or TWO, if you don’t order anything else.

Since we were in Kampar around lunch hour, we decided to stop by at Kam Ling Restaurant for lunch. For the uninitiated, Kam Ling is easily the most famous Chinese diner in Kampar, recently underwent a major facelift, or rather; expansion, into a splendidly-elegant & pompous three-floors building next to its original location. You can choose to dine inside the older, nostalgia-laced eatery with evidently old-timers still running the place, and a separate section of the restaurant loaded with confectioneries on sale; both freshly baked and pre-packed ones ……  Read the rest of this entry »
