A Childhood Dining Experience @ Shatin Court, Pasir Puteh, Ipoh

December 1, 2012 | 5,703 views

Curry Fish Fillet

Curry Fish Fillet – Loaded with filleted grouper, tomatoes, brinjals, ladies fingers, ‘tau pok’ (beancurd) and onions

If you grew up around the neighbourhood of Pasir Puteh/Pasir Pinji, you must have dined here at least once before. Shatin Court by the traffic lights before you reach Pengkalan and the further realms of Pasir Puteh.

A food court with partial al fresco arrangement, the place would be normally packed during dinner hours, and when we were kids, my brother and I absolutely fell head over heels for the Lemon chicken dish served by one of the stalls here. (The other noteworthy lemon chicken being served at Soon Lee, an air-conditioned restaurant that used to be on Jalan Temenggong near to SMK Jalan Pasir Puteh; my alma mater!)

Fast forward two decades later, and the name Shatin Court has vanished. But … what of my Lemon Chicken dish? Read the rest of this entry »

Beginnings – A Monochrome Epilogue of An Old Market

November 2, 2012 | 5,467 views

The Ladies of Pasir Puteh Market

Have you ever wondered who Motormouth really is? Or where I came from? (From the womb la … duh. But I mean as in which part of Ipoh?) It has always tickled my fancy; revealing my identity to old school mates, friends, colleagues or even relatives whom have chanced upon this blog, or led to here (more like misled) by fellow hungry peers.

“You like to eat so much meh? Never seen you eat also …”

“Wait. You write on Motormouth From Ipoh? But I thought you had a day job!! My sympathies …”

“Don’t bluff la …. you don’t seem to be the kind who can even string a proper sentence together! Talk nonsense oklah …”

Hanging Pineapples

On that note, I’ll leave you with my monochrome epilogue of Pasir Puteh market in Ipoh. The place where I was born and raised until I was 12 years old. Childhood memories are deemed the most precious; naive thoughts and joyful sentiments cherished until the day one takes his last breath. Read the rest of this entry »

Rediscovering Leong Kee – Pork Porridge, Curry Mee & Bean Sprouts Chicken @ Pasir Puteh, Ipoh

November 28, 2010 | 12,834 views

Bean Sprout Chicken @ Leong Kee, Pasir Puteh

Other than the BIG TWO (Lou Wong & Onn Kee), there are still many places in Ipoh for “Nga Choy Kai” (Bean Sprouts Chicken). One example being Leong Kee on Jalan Pasir Puteh.

The resurgence of interest in old timers (the previous post on Yee Jie confirmed this) around Ipoh got us back to our ‘roots’. Typical hawker fares that you would not never thought you’d be seeing the reviews on the Net, but yet ….. possess such a tight grip on your heart.

Places like Leong Kee, a shabby coffee shop on Jalan Pasir Puteh that has been around for decades; probably older than most of the Gen-Y reading this post.

Classic Coffee Shop - Leong Kee @ Jalan Pasir Puteh

Leong Kee is famous for their porridge; especially the mixed pig’s offal porridge (Chu Chap Zhuk) and curry mee.

My most immediate reaction when discussing about Leong Kee was the introduction to Sotong Kangkung; a rarely found cuttlefish salad combining blanched water convolvulus (kangkung) and cuttlefish drenched in a nutty, peanut gravy. A close cousin to the other famous Malaysian salad; Rojak, no less.

But lo and behold, the stall selling the salad is not around anymore, but you can still sample Leong Kee’s famous pork porridge boiled over charcoal fire, rich curry mee with tampered spiciness, and their supposedly popular Ais Kacang …… Read the rest of this entry »
