I’ve a funny story to share with all of you. Or wait, I think the right word should be …… Frustratingly-funny story.
You see, Buntong in Ipoh consists of a predominantly Indian community (and to a certain extent; Chinese as well), famous for all sorts of cheap and delicious hawker fare, notably the famous Buntong Beef Noodles (here’s a branch in Ipoh Garden South), Kacang Putih from Kampung Kacang Putih in Buntong (HERE’s one of the outlet selling freshly fried Kacang Putih from home), and even Ipoh’s outstanding Nga Choy Kai (Ayam Tauge or Poached Chicken served with Bean Sprouts & Flat Rice Noodles).

Sun Marpoh Restaurant in Ipoh – Lingering Memories from My Childhood

I was practically trained to recognize my foods, & developing my raw, untrained tastebuds since early childhood days. I lived in Pasir Puteh in Ipoh since I was born, then subsequently moving to my current home (cannot disclose location … scared got stalkers! LOL.) for about 15 years now.

Yup, I’m an ancient brontosaurus from the Jurassic era. So what? I can still chew on the fats, and bite on the bones. HA!!

Gigantic, crispy & tempting deep-fried pork hand (zhu sau) served with the thick, gooey sauce

Good Taste Chef – Klang’s Bak Kut Teh in Ipoh?!

Normally associating good Bak Kut Teh with Klang, or Subang Jaya, or even Kepong, (OK, don’t throw tantrum yet if your favourite BKT is not mentioned. Where else?) one wouldn’t even think of savouring hearty Bak Kut Teh in good old Ipoh.
But things started to pick up recently. Remnants of shattered BKT fairytale seems a little distant now (you should hear, or rather, read some of my previous mishaps, in some of Ipoh’s BEST BKT …. but more on those in later posts. Or in the next life. Hah!).
Believe it … or not. Though I’m lapping up the story with a pinch of salt myself. :)
Anyway, on June 20th (if I’m not mistaken … very hard to memorize conversations nowadays. grey matter seeping out like no tomorrow), Good Taste Chef Restaurant opened its doors to the fidgety/choosy community of foodies in Ipoh. Read the rest of this entry »

Cafe Takahashi @ Jusco Kinta City, Ipoh

A new Japanese-style cafe (kissaten), named Cafe Takahashi has recently opened its door for business in Jusco Kinta City, here in Ipoh. So if you’re one of the many whom had grown weary and sick of all the fast food outlets, sushi on kaiten belts, over-priced delicatessen, etc etc, then you may now jump for joy, at the welcoming sight of the sparkly new cafe located next to K-Box Karaoke on the same floor as the food court, on the level below TGV Cinema.
Trust me, it takes considerable effort for one to get lost in Jusco of Ipoh. Two floors, nothing more, nothing less.
Bright, cheery ambience with a subtle nuance of Japanese influences
Occupying the lot previously belonging to Moritomo Japanese Restaurant (which has since ventured out on their own, patterning itself to be a full-fledged Japanese restaurant by the name of Kizuna), Cafe Takahashi opened few days ago, and the lunch crowd on a Friday was an encouraging sign of Ipohans willing to try something (anything) new, for a change. Foh San Dim Sum Restaurant @ Ipoh – Finally ….

Phew …. After the initial shock that we got on a Sunday morning, with roads all jammed up, all of the dim sum outlets in the vicinity crowded to the max (even coffee shops also jumped in the fray and business was booming!) and us running away with tails between our legs, FINALLY redemption came on a weekday’s morning.
Don’t get overwhelmed. Keyword is : DON’T EVER GIVE UP. Practise your steely glance (or puppy-eyed blinks) and stay adamant at one spot. (Or more, if you’re in a gang of ‘vultures’)
Weekends are definite no-no’s, unless you come REALLY early, or VERY late. They serve dim sum from about 6.30am onwards, until the day’s supplies finish up, or until about 2pm. No dim sum for dinner, sadly. Which is kind of a bummer, really. I wouldn’t mind digging into my Char Siew Pau and Siew Mai for dinner, or better yet, supper!
Remember – Don’t push your luck, and come prancing and whistling on a Tuesday morning. And sharing a table is a norm at Foh San. Especially if you’re in a small group.

Ching Han Guan Biscuit Shop @ Hugh Low Street, Ipoh

Currently Motormouth’s on a roll here !!! Given the situation (rather dire now, with about merely half a month more to go), I dragged FCOE for a run all around Ipoh town today, covering as much eateries as possible before the inevitable.
How tragic you say? Nah …. none of those soapy, pathetic & dramatic endings.
Tucked in the middle of a row of almost-forgotten shoplots, a few doors away from the ever-expanding Yee Hup, Ching Han Guan certainly did not catch my attention before this …..
Tummythoz really had some fun making us bewildered with speculations, wild (and some idiotic) guesses! (Refer to her post HERE). Crispy Skin Roasted Duck @ Sri Taman Mas Restaurant, Falim, Ipoh

Back from a weekend getaway to KL. I’m in dire need of a vacation, to prepare myself for the impending bouts of travelling that’s beckoning in the near future. Wait, that did not sound right huh? :)

The orange signboard is attracting curious stares, and hungry souls …..

A short, short post on one of my favourite food, the Roasted Duck. You see, to find a restaurant or stall serving roasted duck (and other roasted meats) may not seem that hard at all. Lurking in every corner, in most coffee shops and food courts, you’re bound to discover a stall chopping away at their most-prized meats, though most of the time only chicken and pork are commonly dished out. Duck is a rarity, more so for goose. Which explains why I went all the way to KL for my fix sometime ago. (Curious? Click HERE for Pudu’s Famous Roasted Goose)
