Kanna Curry House (Banana Leaf Rice) @ Section 17, Petaling Jaya

November 3, 2009 | 14,533 views

Banana Leaf Rice @ Kanna

I have a confession to make. I’m addicted, wait … obsessed would be a better term here, with the southern Indian specialty, banana leaf rice. Those fluffy white grains drenched with the reddish/orange-coloured elixir that promises a spicy, pungent yet most-revered kick, paired with unlimited supplies of pickles, curried vegetables, and crispy papadom crackers. Served on an over-sized cut of banana leaf which is believed to impart whiffs of fragrance to the overall ensemble, one is even required to adhere to the several customs/guidelines, ie : To fold the banana leaf towards oneself after the satisfactory meal (or fold it up away from you if the food’s darn horrendous), and to eat with your hands whenever possible, to fully savour the delicious combination of curries, meats, assortment of vegetables and rice.

Restoran Tomyam Hasnah @ Venice of Perak, Lumut

October 20, 2009 | 10,037 views

Udang Goreng Tepung

Udang Goreng Tepung (Fried Prawns with Batter)

A break from the Bali travel posts (to avoid this blog from transforming to a Bali Food Blog, instead of a Malaysian one), and allow me to bring you over to the west coast of Perak, to a place posh-ly named the Venice of Perak. Where?!!! Hop over the Dromoz for a satellite view of the aforementioned, prime location, within kilometres away from the port town of Lumut in Perak.

Tom Yam Seafood

Seafood Tom Yum – And the floating impending threats to the senses!

I do realize that I doseldom post reviews on Malay food, with the last post being the rather newly-opened Nasi Padang Simpang Tiga in Greentown of Ipoh. To make amends with regard to that fact, I’ll write about a rather recent outing to Restoran Tomyam Hasnah (thanks to Suzy for the recommendation, and for footing the bill …. =P) in Desa Manjung Raya in Lumut, Perak. This restaurant is situated along the main road of Lumut coastal highway, en route to the town of Lumut, Perak. Point of interest nearby would be the Taman Paya Bakau (Mangrove forest park), which is opened to public for free.

Nasi Padang @ Restoran Simpang Tiga, Ipoh

September 18, 2009 | 23,045 views

Restoran Simpang Tiga is a famous chain of Nasi Padang restaurants originating from Indonesia, with five branches operating over in our neighbouring country. Nasi Padang resembles our very own Malay rice with dishes, or “Nasi Berlauk”, albeit with a little tweaks here and there. The Nasi Padang moniker actually pays tribute to the origin of the food;, whereby Padang is in fact a city in West Sumatra of Indonesia.

Bergedil, Tempe Kacang, & a Clean Environment for Dining

Clean & spacious ambience, with decor reminiscing of Minangkabau influences. Even most of the staff are from Indonesia. The Bergedil is a potato patty with minced meat, while Tempe Kacang is an addictive side dish, yet supposedly pose healthy benefits

Nasi Padang is the epitome of Minangkabau cuisine, but most of the dishes have already been incorporated into the array of Malay dishes commonly found in rice stalls all over Malaysia. The spread of dishes at Simpang Tiga was mind-boggling to an extent, with not less than 20 dishes being offered on the afternoon we patronized the outlet.

The huge space occupied by the restaurant (at least 4 shoplots in Greentown Square of Ipoh – a new business centre in the heart of the city) allows a large seating capacity, perfect for functions, or dinners to be held at the premise. The design of the restaurant exudes a traditional, rustic charm, with two main seating areas being Indoor (with air-conditioning) and Outdoor (al fresco style).

Rojak Manjung in Sitiawan

June 4, 2009 | 6,435 views
This month of June had me in stitches. No, NOT the laughing spell/stomach-cramps inducing kind, but more of that with surgical nature; aka ‘Wounds bleeding‘ with endless slew of work and activities, taking me round the peninsular, for a grand total of 19 days of travelling and away from home !!! That’s more than half the month gone! That has to be a record of sorts ……

Notice the various ingredients to be chosen for your customized serving of Rojak?

Still wondering whether I’ve the time (and energy) to update this blog in coming days, hence I’d better post as much as possible, whenever and wherever I can. For today’s post, let’s take a look at one of Malaysians’ favourite salad, the Rojak.

Rojak Manjung gained considerable fame … as proven by various articles, featured stories, and of course, words-of-mouth
Rojak refers to a popular type of salad commonly found in Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia (known as rujak, refers to Selba’s blog for various versions of the rujak), consisting of fruits and vegetables (and other ingredients occassionally), and served with accompanying sauce. David’s Diner Revisited – 180 Degrees Turnaround?

February 4, 2009 | 12,444 views
Still remember my previous (not-so-positive) experience at David’s Diner in Ipoh? Well, that was afterall, their 2nd or 3rd day in operation, and everything was in a mess, from the service, to the food, and the bane of all outlets serving lunch during peak hours; horrendous waiting time.
Obviously, the spirit of the Lunar New Year’s still in the air … somewhere. ..
Judging from one comment on that post, and other personal experiences at the place, surprisingly, they were good. No, good’s a rather mild choice of word here, they’re simply AWESOME, or FANTASTIC, or DELICIOUS. Or whatnot.
And that, certainly piqued my interest in the diner once again, plus the countless advertisements they’ve put up in the papers.
Mexican Tacos with Minced Chicken Filling (RM13.90)
So today, being rather indecisive about whereto for lunch, we hopped, skipped, and of course, drove to David’s Diner over in Greentown, hoping to debunk the myth, or so they say.
A little before lunch hour, we arrived to a rather empty restaurant, with occupancy rate bordering on 10-20%. But of course, we were early, and the crowd swelled to a near-full house by the end of our meal. Which was a good sign, was it not?
Mexican Burritos (RM13.90)
Service was prompt, in a friendly-manner, and on-the-spot, with no minor mistakes or gripes, aside from the forgotten menus on the table AFTER our orders were taken. But that’s nothing major, and kudos to the staff at David’s Diner, for if you’ve read my previous post on this place, you would’ve been exposed to the helter-skelter extravaganza on that unfortunate luncheon hour.

Drinks were served almost immediately, though no sky juice/warm water/plain water was in sight. It’ll do wonders had they served a glass of warm water while the patrons are pondering and browsing through the menu, given the sweltering heat outside. That’s but a suggestion.

Sour Cream and Tomato Ketchup for the tortilla in the Burritos, the Tacos and the Quesadillas
Miraculously, me, Mr.Z and KYT ordered almost the same item. I chose the Roasted Chicken Quesadillas, while Mr. Z and KYT had the Burritos and Tacos, respectively. The plates of warm tortilla wrapped with fillings arrived uncannily resembled one another, with KYT’s Tacos on the slightly colder and drier side. Mr. Z’s chicken burrito had a layer of melted cheese no top, with salsa topping, and served on double plates, as the burrito was heated before served.
Both the Tacos and Burrito were served with Mexican rice, a mildly spicy/sweet side dish of rice, and some salad. The portion’s definitely filling, albeit the smaller-than-expected visual appearance. So far, so good.
Roasted Chicken Quesadillas (RM11.90)
Opting for a lighter meal, after a rather heavy breakfast of Nam Chau Dry Curry Mee (ooohhh …. they’re still the BEST, I tell ya!), I picked the Quesadillas set with 2 side dishes, bearing in mind a few pieces of starters can’t be anymore filling than their burritos and such. Wrong.

4 BIG pieces of Quesadillas, using the same tortilla wrapping I presume but toasted, filled with tender roasted chicken meat, melted cheese, chopped onions and scallions, and served with sour cream and ketchup for additional flavour. I’m a sucker for anything with cheese and sour cream, and was mesmerized by the burst of flavours. Thumbs up, as I doubt one can find quesadillas as good as these in Ipoh.

Mac & Cheese

From the list of side dishes available (a staggering 20 or so choices!) I picked the Mexican rice (without knowing that KYT and MrZ’s dishes had them as well) and Mac & Cheese. The macaroni with cheese was a little too much to stomach, too rich & creamy. On its own, it manages to hold its pride, but the pasta was a little soggy, not as al dente as expected.

David’s All-American Cheese Burger (Chicken) RM8.90 (?)

TallGal picked the cheese burger, with chicken patty. Their burgers are still small, sadly. But, one major plus point is that, their patties are homemade, NOT those from the supermarket. Amnesiac me forgot about the buns though, as previously I abhorred their generic dry and tasteless buns from the freezer. TallGal, kindly advise here!

Italian Roasted Potatoes
With 2 side dishes of her choice, she had the roasted potatoes (smaller serving this time) and the fries. Nothing spectacular, but yet worked well. Stole a bite of the burger, and was glad the chicken was tender, warm, and served with melted cheddar.
So, on the whole, we were pleasantly surprised at the change in the service, the management, and the food. But do take my words lightly, as taste is a rather subjective preference. One man’s meat may be another’s poison, right?
Will we return again? Well, it was almost a resounding YES. =)

Ansari’s Famous Cendol in Taiping, Perak

November 6, 2008 | 14,881 views

Come come …. a mirage on a scorching hot day? Refreshing, over-flowing with those short, squiggly green worms …. 😉

They sell Pasembor (Indian Rojak) and Cendol … a cool respite from the sweltering heat
Completely forgot about this place. This was the day after the Tao Autocity’s Japanese Buffet experience. Ages ago. So, pardon the missing minor details.

Cendol with Santan (Coconut Milk) & Gula Melaka (Brown Sugar Syrup) with Red Beans/Pulut (Glutinous Rice)

Taiping has TWO very popular cendol stall. Bismillah Cendol (previous experience HERE), and Ansari Famous Cendol. Located VERY near to each other on Barrack’s Road though. Stiff competition always bring out the BEST in everyone?
Thick, luscious and creamy concoction of sweet and milky broth, drizzled liberately with brown sugar syrup, and over-flowing (really!) with those cendol strips (green bean flour paste scented with pandan) and a choice of red beans or pulut, or both.
RM1.00 for a plain bowl. RM1.10 for one with red beans. RM1.30 for a bowl with pulut. And the grand daddy of them all … RM1.40 for a bowl of everything. The refreshing experience? Priceless.

Ansari’s Famous Cendol @ Jalan Chung Thye Phin, Taiping, Perak (Address updated 15/3/09 – Sorry for previous mistake)

So how does this fare, compared to Bismillah, and Penang Road’s Cendol? I’d rate this as an in-betweener. Better than the former, but a notch below by Penang Road’s Teochew Cendol (click HERE and gulp!).

“What do YOU think?”
