A “Happy” Dim Sum Place @ First Garden, Ipoh (Zui Le Xuan Restaurant)

August 10, 2013 | 8,092 views

Zui Le Xuan Dim Sum Ladies at Work

Zui Le Xuan Dim Sum Restaurant – The Affable Ladies in Orange casually working their charm around the relatively cramped premise; capacity to seat a crowd of 50 at most.

By now, you must have noticed that I love breakfasts in Ipoh more than the other meals of the day. The sheer number of delectable options; ranging from simple noodles (fish ball noodles or fondly referred to as ‘liew fun’, Hakka mee, my absolute obsession with dry curry noodles) to elaborate/creative Western style of breakfast sets (thanks to all-day cafes sprouting like mushrooms all over town), there is seemingly no shortage of options upon waking up to the bright, cheerful Ipoh sky.

Sweet & Sour Pork Rolls with Sesame Seeds

Sweet & Sour Rolls; finely-chopped pork rolled with beancurd sheets and studded with sesame seeds on the exterior, braised in a delectably tangy tomato-base sauce.

If you’re a fan of dim sum, and your guess-timate is that there could be probably 101 choices in Ipoh (hop over the my Dim Sum list for an idea of where these are) and you’re falling  back upon Foh San, Ming Court or Yoke Fook Moon for fear of traveling to unknown names and disappointed, then shame on you.

There are great dim sum establishments scattered around Ipoh that you should NOT miss, especially if you’re in Ipoh for the umpteenth time. This morning, I discovered a new addition to the pack; and this is one dim sum restaurant that deserves the off-track detour to First Garden. Read the rest of this entry »

An Hour A Day “Siew Yuk” Stall @ First Garden, Ipoh

June 28, 2012 | 18,480 views

Crispy Roasted Pork

Apparently yes. ONE hour from 2.30pm-3.30pm on their peak days (weekends/public holidays), and slightly extended operating hours if you’re lucky. I am not going to hide the fact that this was my FIRST time eating the legendary roast pork on the spot from this stall named Chee Kong Roast Pork; or better known as First Garden Roast Pork Stall.

If you remember somehow, a shave more than two years ago, I tasted their unforgettably crunchy, juicy and heavenly roast pork (“siew yuk” in Cantonese) at the Ipoh Hawkers’ Fest back in Dec 2009. The small slab of meat costed me more than RM10 but was memorable for the fact that … the crackling pieces of well-marinated, and perfectly roasted pork got me hooked.

And can you say … FINALLY? Read on for more information about this insanely famous stall. Read the rest of this entry »

Ipoh Hawkers’ Fest/Karnival Penjaja Ipoh 2009 – Street Food Galore

December 26, 2009 | 5,149 views

I was sour. I felt disappointed. But yet I concurred and paid a visit to Ipoh famous “Tong Sui Kai” aka Dessert Street (Pusat Makanan Rainbow City yesterday night (anyone bumped into me there?), for the inaugural Ipoh Hawkers’ Fest/Karnival Penjaja Ipoh, lasting from 25th-27th December 2009.

Hawker Style Shark's Fins Soup

I can’t hide the fact that I felt short-changed when first laying my eyes on that piece of flyer distributed prior to the launching of the event yesterday. But Christmas SHOULD be a time for forgiveness, joy and a resounding cheers, instead of jeers.

So, just sit back, embrace the long weekend, and enjoy the shots of the event mentioned ……

Huang Ting Restaurant @ First Garden, Ipoh

July 1, 2009 | 4,240 views
Back from the East Coast, but a let’s take a break from all the travel posts. If you’re not sick of them yet, I am. =P ………. OK, maybe in the next few days or weeks. But as of now, I’m still reeling from the perilous, bumpy 6 hours journey from Kelantan to Ipoh.
Worn, torn and battered menus could only mean one thing; GOOD patronage!
Let’s do a marathon (given the just concluded KL Marathon whereby even food bloggers aka floggers joined in the fray, and came out more lightweighted than ever !!!) on Chinese food from Ipoh. Everything from hawker fare, to the restaurants all over Ipoh city, and all the bits and pieces I’ve missed out and left rotting in the backlog.
