Famous Jeram Pau & Yam Puff @ Shin Lok Coffee Shop, Kuala Selangor

October 20, 2012 | 33,195 views

Kedai Kopi Shin Lok @ Jeram

Steaming hot pau’s, freshly-baked egg tarts, crispy yam puffs and thick coffee brewed at Kedai Kopi Shin Lok, Jeram, Kuala Selangor

Short of generalizing Kuala Selangor as a town famous only for the seafood, we stumbled upon Shin Lok Coffee Shop tucked hidden (or maybe not so) in the town of Jeram; about 20km away from the main town of Kuala Selangor.

Their specialties? Freshly steamed, fluffy buns (also known as “pau”) filled with a variety of ingredients and the crispy yam puffs (known as “woo kok”).

Tai Wo Yuan – The Famous “Wan Tau Long” Jelly & Rojak @ Pasir Puteh Market, Ipoh

March 18, 2012 | 15,714 views

ABC - Ais Kacang

“What can you do when the blistering hot weather’s out against you?”

1. Try a bowl of refreshing Malaysian dessert; Ais Kacang (ABC, or Ais Batu Campur), laced with red syrup and evaporated milk, then topped with kidney beans, crunchy peanuts, sweet corn, cendol, grass jelly and ‘sek lau zhi‘

Sek Lau Zhi on top of the Shaved Ice

2. Or this bowl of wobbly yellow jelly dessert worthy of shedding a tear or two for. Seriously.

Read on and find out why was I jumping (literally!) at the immediate opportunity of visiting this new shop early this morning; albeit knowing so little about their business hours, or whether they’re even opened for breakfast ….. Read the rest of this entry »

CNY 2012 – Motormouth Runs Wild @ Simee, Ipoh

January 20, 2012 | 10,101 views

Stacks of Unsmoked Dried Meat

Look at those stacked up slices of pre-smoked dried meat @ Seong Kee in Simee, Ipoh; a very RED (‘ong’) sign of things to come this Dragon Year?!

Yay! Live updates streaming on a day to day basis (I hope). Motormouth reached home extremely early this morning (almost uncharacteristically me, some may say), and thankful for that as I was informed that the traffic jam this afternoon on the North-South expressway was REALLY bad … about 20-30km/hour at best. So, if you’re one who’s sunbathing (terribly scorching today!) out there, drive safe. You know you do not want to miss the onslaught of mega-lip-smacking stories throughout the week …..

Busy Roasting the Dried Meat

Imagine having to smoke every single piece manually, at a rate of thousands of pieces everyday! I would have thrown in the towel LONG before the tenth basket!

An air of festivity is definitely in the air, was grinning from ear to ear catching a glimpse of MH Tower (next to the drive-thru McDonald’s near to Jusco/Tesco in Medan Ipoh Bistari. Then the spanking new row of shops fronting Ipoh Hometown Restaurant that looked promising, yet I wonder what else can they open (new coffee shops, Japanese restaurant, fast food chain again?) that’s a cut above the rest.

Now, read on for the impromptu food run @ Simee in Ipoh …… Read the rest of this entry »

Hong Kee’s 3 Decades of Egg-cellent Creations – Shat Keh Ma, Egg Tart & Gai Dan Gou

August 31, 2011 | 43,895 views

Disclaimer : Pardon me if I come up with a half-baked post today. Not a walk in the park for sure, for more reasons than one. Firstly, I’m still burping from those extra cheesy, caloric-laden pizzas loaded with salami and Italian sausages from dinner. More on that in a later post.

Shat Keh Mah

Shat Keh Ma (literally translated to “Kill Ride Horse” …. don’t ask why because I don’t know) is but  one of those snacks that most people would never bother to write about. But then again, I am an anomaly/freak of nature/weirdo of a food blogger.

Tonight’s my last night here in Ipoh for this Raya/Merdeka homecoming fest, and the 5 days of non-stop eating relived all those bittersweet memories of the glory days when I was still working here.

Ahhh … the better days when life was more than just work and traffic jams.

No turning back now I guess, so might as well expand my horizons to territories uncharted, street food unwritten and stories untold. For today, allow this Motormouth to share his story on Hong Kee Confectionery; another priceless gem of an outlet famous for their ‘shat keh ma’, egg tarts and ‘gai dan gou’ (egg cake with kaya) ….. HK Eats – North Point Egg Waffles, Tai Cheong Bakery’s Egg Tarts & “But Zhai Gou”

August 15, 2011 | 12,495 views

North Point Famous Mini Egg Cakes

North Point Famous Egg Waffles aka ‘Gai Dan Jaai’

Best way to eat around in Hong Kong? Embrace the plethora of street foods and indulge in snacking round the clock. Seriously, you don’t want to stuff yourself silly with the conventional 3 meals a day. Oh no …. 6 might be stretching the limit slightly, but the snacking in between meals should be cherished as much.

After all, how else can you fit in egg tarts, ‘but zhai gou’ (Chinese style of mini rice puddings flavoured with red bean, brown sugar or plain white sugar) and ‘gai dan jaai’ (mini egg cakes/waffles) into that packed-like-sardines itinerary of yours?

HK Eats – The Best Egg Tart in Hong Kong Series (Pt 1 – Honolulu Coffee Shop)

June 14, 2011 | 14,322 views

For the full series (and do get ready some napkins and coffee to keep those eye lids open); hop over to : Motormouth in Hong Kong/Macau 2011.

Milk Tea, Buns and Tarts @ Honolulu Coffee Shop

Honolulu Coffee Shop serves a commendable range of pastries and beverages to perk up your day, no matter if it’s breakfast, brunch, lunch or best of all … tea time. And there we were for a good cup of Hong Kong style milk tea (fresh milk instead of the Malaysian style of teh tarik with condensed milk), paired with irresistible egg tarts and more.

Hong Kong’s ‘char chaan teng’ (typical cafes spanning every nook and corner of the city on steroids) never ceases to amaze me. Though you can mentally prepare for what’s on the menu (polo bao, milk tea, egg tarts, macaroni in soup, Nissin noodle soup, etc), yet every outlet serves a signature creation that’s no doubt the crowd puller that keeps the hungry gluttons back again and again.

In this case? Honolulu Coffee Shop (Openrice’s page) takes pride in their flaky egg tarts (as opposed to Tai Cheong‘s buttery short pastry version; the new review to come in a later post), and various buns/breads to cater to the smaller appetites. Read on to gather my thoughts on this cafe with a branch in Wan Chai and this on Stanley Street in the heart of Central, Hong Kong ….

Of Egg Tarts @ Ipoh Old Town, Mother’s Day & Timeless Memories

May 7, 2011 | 6,574 views

Old Town Egg Tarts Stall

Like, seriously? An inconspicuously parked stall opening from a side door, facing the famous Kong Heng coffee shop in old town of Ipoh. (now ‘glamourously known as “Ipoh Kong Heng Restaurant”)

Working over the weekend is not fun. In fact, I have completely lost track of time, and drowned by the sheer exhaustion of it all. Kept thinking that tomorrow’s a Monday, when it’s actually SUNDAY.

And Mother’s Day to boot. Yet, this Motormouth is still miles away from home, and funny it took one SMS from Mum to jolt me back to reality. So if you’re not with your family now, then please give your mother a call, or an SMS/MMS/Whatsapp/etc to show you still care …. and you should.

The celebration will have to be delayed until further arrangement (hopefully, in a few days to come), but for today’s post, let’s reminisce on something closer to home.

Glass Display

Array of mouth watering pastries from this stall without a name (as far as I was concerned).

Pardon the immense delay, as the shots were taken way before I had my LX3. Yup, remember the good old days when my dear Nokia 5610 was all I had? These shots were from back then, stashed to oblivion for a good 3 years or so …. then revived in a timely manner.

When I actually miss home the most. And the countless memorable breakfasts we had in old town of Ipoh. The REAL old town of Ipoh, mind you. Not that Old Town White Coffee debacle …..
