Motormouth From Ipoh – Malaysian Food & Travel

Happy long weekend (again?) dear folks! If you are cruising smoothly back to your hometown (or jamming your way there), be patient, persevere and think of the finer things in life waiting for you at your destination; food … glorious food.

Having said that, for those of you who are locals residing in the Klang Valley or smart enough to avoid the traffic back home, here’s a piece of story on Yook Tho Yin Restaurant in Damansara Utama (or Uptown; to most of us); a 26 years old establishment that is renowned for their huge dumplings (bak zhang), mooncakes and roasted meats.

Golden shades of glory from the pumpkin gravy dousing the silky smooth blocks of homemade beancurd; complemented by chunky bites of shrimps, filament sticks and snow peas.

Let’s not deny the fact that Yook Tho Yin (YTY for the rest of this post), now helmed by the second generation of the Loo family can also effortlessly whip up delicious Cantonese cuisine too.  Read the rest of this entry »

A throwback to the olden days when tiffin carriers, straw hats and wooden cabinets were the norms, Fat Spoon‘s witty masterminds; sisters Melissa and Michelle reinvigorated grandma’s recipes with an unmistakable dose of charm.

Fat Spoon Cafe did not initially strike me as a quintessentially retro cafe serving fusion food loaded with an extra shot of rendezvous; a taste of what were whipped up in our kitchen when we were small. Promising an experience that most of us (or the kids in us) can relate to, the menu covers everything from burgers to rice dishes with various twists; think along the line of ulam fried rice, perut ikan rice, spicy beef macaroni, watercress soup noodles and a diverse range of desserts that include sago gula melaka, cempedak spring rolls with vanilla ice cream and even the Last Polka‘s creations. Menglembu Wantan Mee; staying true to its roots, the egg noodles here promises a bounce (more like a crunch) without any lingering curse of alkaline taste, nor soggy over-cooked noodles gingerly decorated with ‘generic’ red-dyed char siew. In short, this was delicious.

After the umpteenth posts on Ipoh, I guess you must be dazzled not by the mouth-watering shots but confused by the sheer assault of posts from up north and all over the place instead of sitting still in KL/Selangor.

To set the record straight, I AM still staying and working here in Petaling Jaya. The backlog of photos awaiting to see the light of day has been inching closer to push me off the edge. Heck, I lost most receipts and recollection of the dining experience has been on a gradual decline.

On that note, I began to wonder. Is there NO restaurant, cafe or stall in the Klang Valley that can conjure up something vaguely reminiscence of good old street fares from my dearest hometown of Ipoh? Yes, anyone can claim to serve authentic Ipoh hawker food yet the claim may hold no water, but Annie 1 is another story altogether (cheesy pun, I know … )

Unlike the OTHER more famous and commercialized BIG Breakfast from McD, the ones at Departure Lounge are REALLY satisfying and customizable; from 3 to 5 to 7 items (RM8.90, RM11.90, RM13.90) though do NOT come with a complimentary cup of coffee.

SUNDAY~!!!! In a flash. Yet I am revelling in Every. Single. Second of It. Can’t blame me for trying to squeeze every moment since this weekend’s been LOOOOOOONNNNGGG overdue.

Thus, what better way to kickstart a lovely Sunday with a hearty breakfast (or brunch, as I know most of you prefer to stay in bed and wake up much later than usual …), than at Departure Lounge; a place that serves all day breakfasts in Damansara Uptown. They first started in Solaris Mont Kiara, but that’s way off for me so Uptown’s the way to go.

If you’re screaming and running away in agony from the sight of fresh, healthy greens, then SHAME on you!

The dust has settled, after some serious bouts of bingeing. First it was Christmas, then the New Year beckoned with more merry-making, then Chinese New Year came and left a trail of devastation …. piling on the unsightly pounds where the sun doesn’t shine. No thanks to the endless supplies of new year cookies, rounds of ‘Lou Sang’ and then there would be the senseless nights of mahjong + groundnuts + beer.

But then again, salvation comes at the right moment. Salad Bar in Damansara Uptown has actually been around for one year; almost exactly. This charming, no-frills outlet prides on their creation of colourful and tasty salads without compromising on the flavours and of course, nutrition. Nasi Lemak (literally translated to FAT/OILY rice, but in reality the term came from the liberal use of coconut milk in the rice; hence the rich, sinful and aromatic taste) @ Village Park, Damansara Uptown.

Since I got ‘sounded’ for being tooooooooooooooooooooo long-winded recently (hehe), I’ll cut this post to as short as possible. So brief you can’t even believe your eyes. Yes, and you’d feel that you’ll be craving for more words of wisdoms/rants/incoherent ramblings/nonsense from Motormouth.
