Restoran Kakak @ Taiping

March 12, 2010 | 130 views | 2 Comments »

Since I haven’t been writing much about outstation travels around Perak, allow me to get back into the groove, and share a simple post about this restaurant (or rather, coffee shop?) that serves Taiping’s version of chicken noodle soup for breakfast. The name of the shop? Restoran Kakak.

Chicken Noodle Soup @ Kakak, Taiping

One glance and you’d be forgiven for thinking this is another bowl of “Kai See Hor Fun” from Ipoh, or even a toned down version of Penang’s Koay Teow Th’ng.

The name of the shop is actually “Jia Jia” (literally translated to Every Family), but when converted to Malay (or English), it becomes Kakak. :)

A little misleading, for a traditional Chinese coffee shop to be named as such?

Klang Food Centre – How ’bout Pau for breakfast instead?

February 28, 2010 | 458 views | 19 Comments »

Constantly bewildered by the repetitive visits to Bah Kut Teh (BKT) restaurants in Klang, when it comes to breakfast in town? Yeah, so Klang’s THE place for possibly the most porky-licious breakfast one could ever have (step aside bacons and sausages!), but then again, how can one stomach the barrage of BKT indulgences morning after mornings, and sometimes even for lunch/dinner?!!!

Hainan Pau @ Klang Food Centre

Unpretentious, no fancy serving platters, nor funky/whimsical decor – Klang Food Centre serves possibly the most authentic and true-blue version of Hainanese pau in Klang

And then this unassuming, almost overshadowed by the countless BKT restaurants in its vicinity (Taman Intan of Klang, THE definite area for BKT hunt if you’re not fond of reaching the traffic-madness of Klang town) comes along, nestled in the middle of a row of shophouses, which of course …. also houses a few famous BKT outlets itself. Remember the famous Teluk Pulai Bak Kut Teh, when we saw Klang-ites and  BKT-aficionados alike getting into squabbles over the BEST BKT Klang has to offer …..

Krabi/Phuket (Part 5) – Koh Det’s Breakfast Wonders

February 24, 2010 | 363 views | 10 Comments »

Continuation from Krabi Night Market ….

Yeah, it has been THAT long since I’ve posted the subsequent chapter on our Krabi-Phuket Getaway earlier this year. Blame it on procrastination, blame it on the lazy bones …. but here’s another short post, but on one most memorable stall on the sidewalk in Krabi, where we had our breakfasts TWICE during our stay directly opposite of the stall, at Ao Nang Grand Inn.

Koh Det Stall @ Krabi

No menu, no price list. Just stand there and point away.

Being a Thai Muslim in Krabi (and they’re in abundance, I tell you), Koh Det (spelling might be wrong) operates his stall early in the mornings right in front of Bangkok Bank on the main road of Ao Nang, on the same row with McDonald’s. You can’t miss this row of roadside stalls, for they operate almost round the clock, interchangeably between breakfast-brunch stalls and lunch-dinner stalls occupying the same lots.

Khao Mok Gai & Fried Chicken

The yellow-hued grains with chicken is called Khao Mok Gai, a type of Thai-Malay dish not unlike our very own Nasi Biryani.

Routinely getting used to having breakfasts at 7-11 convenience stores whenever we were in Thailand, this time around I was glad we somewhat broke the mould. Somewhat, in the sense that we STILL got our early morning milk-fixes at 7-11, and snacking between meals, as well as filling up on the not-to-be-missed Lay’s Potato Chips.

Kao Lee Dim Sum Restaurant @ Ipoh Garden

January 12, 2010 | 814 views | 26 Comments »

Kao Lee Dim Sum Restaurant in Ipoh Garden has stood the test of time, serving delectable morsels of dim sum for breakfast-brunch for a good many years now. Other than dim sum, Kao Lee was also serving steamboat and various noodles/rice & dishes for lunch and dinner. Noticed the past tense? That’s because currently they’re not opening for dinner, but will resume operations come dinner hours in the near future.

Fried Glutinous Rice @ Kao Lee

#1 – In comparison to Hong Kee in Pandan Indah (and everywhere else in Klang Valley), Kao Lee’s pan-fried glutinous rice scores better in terms of taste, and not as greasy.

Kao Lee Restaurant @ Ipoh Garden

#2 – Comfortable, spacious, and none of those ruckus ala Foh San, or Ming Court. Okay, maybe sometimes.

Brunch @ Pink Sage & X’mas Comes Early?

December 7, 2009 | 483 views | 42 Comments »

Pink Sage - Blackboard

The Pink Sage Diner & Pantry @ Jalan Dang Wangi

A diner in the heart of the city, yet not at the most strategic of location – The Pink Sage Diner & Pantry is not easily distinguished from the other shops along the road of Jalan Dang Wangi. Not until the many other food bloggers wrote about the almost hidden gem, that it started to gain momentum and appeared in most food reviews.

Stacked Breakfast @ Pink Sage

Stacked Breakfast – RM17.50 / USD5.00

Of course, I was up for brunch come early Sunday morning. Wait, how to have brunch EARLY in the morning leh? Hehehe …. Contradicting statements alright. Let me rephrase that; Waking up at a rather comfortable hour of 11am (I can sleep sooooo well on weekends), combining both breakfast and lunch into one was exactly what I had in mind. And when brunch sprang to mind, the name Pink Sage instantly popped up for more reasons than one. Jalan Dang Wangi is a road I am more familiar with, for it’s where Yut Kee (the Roti Babi specialist in Kuala Lumpur) is at, and the area is a mess of one way streets, but yet the names all sound different, easily discernible, in comparison to say, Jalan SS22/13/5252/7858 or whatever.
