Mid-week Roast Pork Cravings

February 9, 2010 | 572 views | 26 Comments »

What makes a good slab of roast pork? Is it the crunchy skin, the perfectly tender and moist marinated meat? The layer of gelatinous fat underneath that crackly skin? Or even the accompanying piquant, and garlicky chili sauce?

Wong Fee Kee Roast Pork

Truth be told, back when I was a small kid, roast pork was never a favourite of mine. Nor even something that I would gladly choose when it  came to take away lunch at the chicken rice stall. I’d pick the Char Siew (BBQ marinated pork), the Siew Cheong (Pork/Offals Sausages), and even the roast chicken/duck, in that particular order. Probably more of an adult’s piece of meat, Siew Yoke (that’s roast pork in Cantonese) caters to the matured and possibly, jaded tastebuds more often than not.

On a whole different level, if you will.

Fancy Havin’ Steamed Fish Head for Breakfast? (Ngan Woh Coffee Shop @ Bercham, Ipoh)

February 7, 2010 | 529 views | 20 Comments »

If you’re down to Ipoh for a daytrip, overnight sensation excursion, or even if you’re a permanent resident (like yours truly) here in this exceptional, one-of-a-kind quaint town with those killer limestone caves, fat bean sprouts and (as they say …) pretty girls – you’d be scratching your head wondering where to go for breakfast.

Truth is, after the umpteenth dim sum feast in Ipoh, deep down inside, you’d be wishing for something much simpler, as tasty, but not the average wantan noodles or fish ball noodles you can get in the other states.

Ngan Woh Coffee Shop Interior

40 Years+ of Legacy speaks volume of its tenacious following ….

I was poisoned by a few posts before, on Ngan Woh Coffee Shop. (Click HERE, HERE or HERE for the doses of poisons). Surprisingly, throughout my stay in Ipoh, and very near to Bercham for that matter, I have never tasted, nor even heard about this shop on the main road of Bercham with an outstanding 40 years plus of history.

Goes to show that I am NOT a bulldozer who had demolished every single eatery in Ipoh. Really. ;)

Sar Kok Liew @ Ngan Woh

For really good, homemade Sar Kok Liew (crispy stuffed yambean/’sengkuang’), try Ngan Woh.

Bercham Prawn Wantan Mee @ Shine Noodles, Ipoh

November 24, 2009 | 875 views | 37 Comments »

Prawn Wanton

How often do you find a whole piece of fresh & succulent prawn in one wanton?

Since the post on Buntong Wan Tan Noodle received mixed reactions; some true blue Ipohans still swear by the authentic and most traditional approach of cooking the wantan noodle, while the others felt that the quality has dwindled over the years, I’m still on the prowl, searching for the BEST Wantan Mee Ipoh has to offer. The Ipoh stadium’s version has its own share of fans, but my only gripe is the small portion being served, as well as the comparatively long waiting time. But of course, the Buntong’s version triumphs once again in this aspect, especially come peak business hours. :)

Good Taste Chef – Klang’s Bak Kut Teh in Ipoh?!

August 8, 2009 | 271 views | 23 Comments »
Normally associating good Bak Kut Teh with Klang, or Subang Jaya, or even Kepong, (OK, don’t throw tantrum yet if your favourite BKT is not mentioned. Where else?) one wouldn’t even think of savouring hearty Bak Kut Teh in good old Ipoh.
But things started to pick up recently. Remnants of shattered BKT fairytale seems a little distant now (you should hear, or rather, read some of my previous mishaps, in some of Ipoh’s BEST BKT …. but more on those in later posts. Or in the next life. Hah!).
Believe it … or not. Though I’m lapping up the story with a pinch of salt myself. :)
Anyway, on June 20th (if I’m not mistaken … very hard to memorize conversations nowadays. grey matter seeping out like no tomorrow), Good Taste Chef Restaurant opened its doors to the fidgety/choosy community of foodies in Ipoh. CONTINUE READING THE REST OF THIS ENTRY »

Hoy Tin Lau Restaurant @ Bercham, Ipoh

July 2, 2009 | 223 views | 20 Comments »
Blogged about Hoy Tin Lau Restaurant waaaaayyyy back then, before they relocated to this new location in Bercham in Ipoh. So to those of you who were fans of Hoy Tin Lau’s amazing range of freshwater fishes (albeit at a price, beware …), and the incomparable Sar Kiong Kai (Roast Chicken served with freshly mashed ginger/galangal), but felt dumped somewhat by the sudden closing of the restaurant, don’t fret. About 5-10 minutes away, you’ll find your solace. ;)
Now the place can seat a larger crowd, compared to the rather cramped cornerlot back then
