Pasir Pinji Fried Yong Tau Foo

Finally got a shot of the place, but sadly, no signboard in English

BIG succulent pieces of fish paste

Forgot the shop name la… but it’s at a crossroad opposite another coffee shop, previously owned by the deceased Tai Kau (Big Dog), as he was fondly remembered. Last time it was under some trees, and attap roof only. Quite hot in the afternoon, but ppl thronged the stall for laksa, fried ‘liew’ (yongtaufoo),fried chicken Poh Lee, & refreshing array of drinks (Wan Tau Long-dunno translation la… Ai Yi Ping Jelly?)
Now they renovated, and moved into a shop with ample seats, and lots of new stalls. The rojak still stays, as is the Fried “Liew” stall, but the rest dunno where they mushroomed from.
Each piece is STILL 50cents, and fried on the spot. On weekends noon, be prepared for long queues. I chose to go earlier, roughly before 12pm, to be able to choose my fav pieces, rather than simply choosing leftovers/the same type of newly fried batches. Their fish paste is VERY tasty, and lack the typical processed fishy smell.Portion is quite generous too. You can opt for noodles/laksa to go with the Liews, but normally i dun, to save time, haha ….

Location : (If anyone needs directions, I would try to help la … but i think its quite famous liao)
UPDATED! : It’s at Jalan Pasir Pinji, 31650 Ipoh. The opposite shop’s name is Sin Seng Kee Coffee Shop.

sure lee, i’ll try my best.
If you’re from Ipoh, it’ll be easier.
1)Coming from Tiger Lane (Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah Selatan, i think)from Jusco direction, go straight and you’ll pass Royal Golf Club onyour left, go straight til a BIG crossroads ,4-way traffic lights junction. Left is to Medan Gopeng/Simpang Pulai, right to Jalan Gopeng and pusat bandaraya. Go STRAIGHT instead, passed another traffic lights, left is to AIRPORT, but instead go straight.

    2) Til you passed SMK Raja Perempuan, you’ll reach another traffic lights which is climbing uphill-like. Pretty tough to maneuvre with Manual cars (haha). Go STRAIGHT again, til u reach the next traffic lights.

    3) Here, turn RIGHT instead, and you’ll soon come to another crossroads. The shop is to your LEFT, right at the junction. It’s quite spacious. Park anywhere you like, for free.

    Hope this helps!

    editor,

I am very surprised that since u have mentioned about this Pasir Pinji yong tau foo (which to most Ipoh folks are just average) and Poh Lee Fried Chicken (just opposite the yong tau foo stall), that
u have left out the most famous Pasir Pinji hawker’s food which is accidentally very near to both the above-mentioned stall. Its none other than the Very famous Pasir Pinji Chee Cheong Fun which is situated at the 5th street of Pasir Pinji and walking distance from both of those stalls (Yong Tau Foo and Poh Lee chicken). People from KL will always make their way to this stall for the Chee Cheong Fun and my golly, when u visit the stall, u will have to take numbers tag and if u are unlucky, u could be behind those who will order 10, 20 or even sometimes 50 packets and its a norm that u will probably have to wait for at least 20 mins to be serve on a very good day (for u, that is of course and not the fat lady seller) but if u caught them on a big que days, u will probably needs to wait an hour of eternity. By the way, the shop only open for business on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday while Wednesday is the rest day and because of their age (old couple in their 60s), these days, they even close on Saturday and Sunday.

I am a little surprised that the Chee Cheong Fun stall did not feature in this blog at all. Its one of the most famous hawker food in Ipoh and since u are formerly from Ipoh, it is very difficult to understand why u did not write about this stall.

    Cheers!

    Hi Jude,
    Good comment on this.
But I have been requested to feature this CCF for so many times, and I have explained myself time and again.

Okay, for those not in the know, this Chee Cheong Fun is at a house number 1456 (for a picture of the house, do hop over to http://www.j2kfm.com/ipoh-famous-canning-garden-chee-cheong-fun/) on Jalan Pasir Pinji 5.

You MUST call up and reserve if you’re planning to buy in bulk (20 packets and above is very very normal), but I do not have their number now. Anyone?

I have been eating from this stall in the house since I was a small kid. I was born and raised in Pasir Puteh, within walking distance to this house selling the immensely famous CCF. Last time, the wait was not that bad …. as compared to now.

Since this stall opens only for four days per week (Mon, Tues, Thurs, Fri), from about 12.30pm onwards (you can take your number in the morning though), it’s almost impossible for me to spend hours waiting for this, especially when I’m working in old town, and only an hour of lunch. Except on Fridays, that is.

I promise to get to this place as soon as I can. Thanks again Jude for the reminder. But I am sure many tourists would have known about this CCF extraordinaire?

Erm, Nicole it depends loh. Of course I don’t doubt that Dai Shu Geok’s yong liew taste better and more varieties, but some like the stuffed brinjals, are better here.

Hi samlee, you mean Ah Ping’s?
She’s the one making all the ‘yeong liew’ for Big Tree Foot on Jalan King.
At least back then she did them all … now I not so sure.
