Michelangelo’s Pizzeria @ Ipoh – Celebrations

January 7, 2010 | 2,002 views| 53 Comments »

And it’s Christmas, New Year and another particularly important date came late, when I finally popped over to Michelangelo’s Pizzeria for some Fresh, Hot Pizza made on the spot. If you have no idea on what or where Michelangelo’s is, do read my previous post first, for clarification. After all, I doubt many Ipohans can grasp the idea of freshly tossed/stretched pizza dough, then literally strewn with Michael’s pick of fresh ingredients (bear in mind it’s all so spontaneous, sometimes he adds/omits whatever he likes), and baked in a most unconventional brick oven fuelled by firewood (unconventional in the sense that it’s almost unheard of here in Ipoh). Up to a blistering 750 degrees, and within minutes your pizza would be served on your table!

Fresh Hot Pizza @ Michelangelo's Pizzeria

For the past week, it was almost an onslaught of a whirlwind of events for Michelangelo’s. Business was brisk ever since they started operations on Christmas day – People waited for seats, then for the pizzas, and some even claimed to have stood for a good 40 minutes or more in search for an empty seat! Yes, the place may not be able to cater to a HUGE crowd for the time being, resembling your casual, small-scale neighbourhood cafe more than anything. Michael claimed that it’s most regrettable to turn customers away, and he’s doing the best he could to handle the crowd. Which made me contemplating on yet another post on Michelangelo’s Pizzeria, to limit publicity for the time being, so to speak.

Psst, so if you’re reading this, and the urge for a visit is ever stronger than before, pray don’t tell on me ….

Say you heard about this place from somewhere else. Or from words of mouth. Or you stumbled upon the outlet.

Macchiato @ Michelangelo's Pizzeria

And they serve Lavazza coffee only … from Latte to Macchiato, and Espresso to Cappucino

Currently, Michelangelo’s is STILL running their Holiday/Opening Special Menu, hence the menu can be revamped in the near future, and prices are subjected to change. So if you’re liking what you’re reading now, hop over this very instant. Wait, I mean, when they’re opened for business of course (6pm-10.30pm), not in the middle of the night.

The menu is far from extensive, which is a plus point to me. So you don’t have to crack your head thinking of what to order, and make things so much easier for Michael to whip up those gorgeous pizzas. 8 types of ‘pre-set’ pizzas are on the menu, to assist the diners, but of course, there’s always the customization option.

As of now, the pizzas are priced from RM18.80 to RM28 (USD 5.30 – USD8) only, and they come in standard sizes and with thin crust. But of course, for the time being only. Nothing’s permanent, and you may see thicker dough versions in the near future, and different combination of flavours, as well as new ingredients added into the menu.

Breadsticks, Chili Con Carne, Caesar's Salad

Breadsticks with warm melted garlic butter (RM5.50/USD1.50), Chili Con Carne (not in the menu yet), Caesar Salad (RM8.90/USD2.50) and Garlic Parmesan Knots (RM5.90/USD1.70)

Starting off the meal with some warm, freshly baked breadsticks served with a side dipping sauce of melted garlic butter (and health freaks beware – your heart may skip a beat!), garlic parmesan knots that’s chewy yet crispy on the outside, and some simple, yet very authentic Caesar Salad, sans the egg, croutons and whatever they throw in nowadays. Just fresh, crispy lettuce, shaved parmesan and olive oil with anchovies.

The Chili Con Carne is a potential future addition, but a very tasteful newbie nevertheless. Remember A&W’s Coney Dogs? Yeah, crude comparison I know, I’m all set for a spank here. Hehehe ….. But you get the idea …..

Spaghetti Carbonara @ Michelangelo's Pizzeria

And much like the Spaghetti Carbonara Michael cooked up for the tasting session back then, it’s on the menu, thankfully. At RM18.90/USD5.40 per portion, it’s definitely meant for sharing as the rich and creamy sauce packed a most decadent punch, coupled with those sinfully addictive pork bacons. If you love your cream Carbonaras, you MUST try Michelangelo’s version. The only other place in Ipoh I know of that serves NON-halal version of pasta is Denis Jazz Bistro in Ipoh Garden.

Thin Crust Pizza - Greek & Italian Sausage Flavours

And as for the pizza, Siew Li (Michael’s lovely wife-cum-manager) recommended the Greek and the Italian Sausage. The former consists of crumbled feta cheese with black olives on a tangy tomato puree base, while the latter was made up of homemade Italian sausages (pork), olives and green peppers (supposedly, told ya it’s random!). One pizza can easily be shared among 2-3 diners, or 4 and above if you’re ordering the other dishes.

And yes, you can mix and match, to an infinite number of combination (Hehe, or so Michael said, but don’t push your luck. It’s gonna make Siew Li’s life a living hell; wondering how to bill you at the end of the meal !!!). But rest assured all pizzas are prepared freshly on the spot, meaning that you can really witness the tossing, stretching, and baking process in front of your eyes. Oh feel free to snap, record, mimic or whatever Michael’s doing for the pizzas, for he couldn’t care less. ;)

Elevated Pizza @ Michelangelo's Pizzeria

Another unorthodox note was the way the pizza on pan was served on your table. If you’re seated on a smaller table, with limited space, fret not! They have those HUGE empty cans of tomato puree ready to ‘elevate’ your pizzas to gastronomic heaven. So to speak.

Cheesecake @ Michelangelo's Pizzeria

And wondering how to end your meal on a sweet note? There’s the ice-cream. But go for their homemade baked cheese cakes – New York style, with a most delectable base made from crushed almonds. That layer alone warrants for your attention. Not to mention the luscious cheesecake itself. At RM6.50/USD1.80 per slice (DO NOT COMPARE WITH MY SLICE IN THE PICTURE ABOVE, THAT’S A SPECIAL MOTORMOUTH CUT, OK?), you can be assured of satisfaction, and a most lip-smacking finale.

Directions : If you know where Jusco Kinta City and Tesco Hypermarket in Ipoh Garden East are, then you’re almost there. Very near to the Ipoh Selatan highway exit (the second Ipoh exit if you’re coming from the SOUTH – the First being the Tambun/Lost World of Tambun @ Sunway City exit). As you make your way towards the town (keep left and turn left at the first traffic lights, right will take you to Tasek/Bercham), you will notice a McDonald’s 24 Hours Drive-Thru outlet on your left. Passing that fast food outlet, take the second left into Taman Ipoh Timur. At the cross road intersection, turn RIGHT, and you’ll see Kizuna Japanese Restaurant on your right. Michelangelo’s Pizzeria is on the SAME row further down the road.

Michelangelo’s Pizzeria was the place me and my friends’ end the year 2009 celebrating our birthday together.
All the ingredients were so fresh(I missed their bacon), really can’t wait to bring more frens to try again.

And not forgot to mention their cheese cake, a MUST try, the cheezy flavor spread to every corner inside my mouth in every bite.

I’m really glad we have such a great pizza place (beside shakey’s and …..da pizza hut) in Ipoh serving real thin pizzas with fresh ingredients.

*I suggest to those who planned to go to Michelangelo’s Pizzeria, plz bring your frens along so that you all can taste more different pizza (including customized toppings).

Yeah, bring more friends, for the pizza is served in a standard portion, and rather large at that.
I started my year with Michelangelo’s instead. :)

Went to Michelangelo’s Pizzeria just because of your fantastic post! Well, I was in for a shock of my life when the lady boss was so rude & kicked me out by saying repeatedly, ‘THIS IS MY RESTAURANT & I CAN DO WHATEVER I WANT, SO GET UP!!’ when I sat at a table that I’ve waited for 15mins ala ‘Foh San Tim Sum Restaurant’ style! No need to be so arrogant & chase your customers away when your business is good Mrs Michelangelo!

Wait, this is serious. The lady boss herself? You mean SL? That can’t be true, she’s a very nice lady.
You mind to explain in details, so the management themselves can answer this accusation?

    [Reply]

  21. RMO aka Michael: Michelangelo's s says:
    January 11, 2010 at 5:35 am

What happened was this and there are several other customers who will attest to this. We had a full house and no seats at all., there were four parties waiting patiently outside. This lady walked past them all and sat down the minute a table opened up. SL went up to her very politely and asked her if she would mind sitting at the counter becuae this table was meant for one of the parties who had been waiting for more then several minutes, the lady’s exact words were and I quote: “yes I do mind, you have no wait to be seated sign outside. SL then politely said to her, yes we know that, it is on a first come first sit basis, however because we are completely full and there are already people waiting we are trying to help them out, if you could move to the counter we will find you a table as soon as one turns up. The lady still refused to move and also said again that there is no wait to be seated sign and that she can sit there. SL for a third time very nicely tried to accommodate her by saying she would find her and her friend another table if she would mind moving to the counter first, but the lady still refused and said she was waiting for a friend, this table was meant for a party of 4. This was also during our busiest time on Sunday night. When the lady became rude to SL and said she will not move and she does not care, SL then said this is my restaurant and we have to consider all our customers concerns. The lady became more aggressive so SL said if she did not like moving to the counter she could leave. It was very unfortunate and the customers there felt uncomfortable about what had happened. However we do have to take the concerns of all our customers to heart and this lady was the type that would walk past you waiting in line at the bank or cut in front of you in a car when you were waiting for a turn, that is how she appeared. Funny though because we thought she was a repeat customer, maybe this was her first time there. Those who have been to our place know that we try very hard to give them the best experience that we can give, we also usually give free coffees, cheesecakes, or meals on the house if there are any delays. We have a very limited number of tables around 9 to 10 and can only sit around 40-50 people at a time and we try to make certain everyone gets in and gets their turn. But there are unfortunate times where the customers “are not” always correct. We have severed around 1000 plus people since we opened on the 24th and this is the very first time we had an ugly incident. Those who have been there or know us know that in no way are we like the above description. This really was a case were the customer was abusive, and rude to us first and would not understand that there were people there waiting before her even though we do not have a please wait to be seated sign. It should have been obvious to her that even though we do not have such a sign that there were people there before her waiting for a table.

We do have the right to help our customers out. And I am very sorry to say this as we do not wish to loose any customers at all, but if this is the type of customer that is wanting to come to our place we can do without this person and their attitude. While we would welcome her back at any time and give her the best in service we could, it was her attitude that brought on the small outrage that occurred on both sides. We will let the customers be the judge of it. But funny how she left out the parts above in her comments about her insisting that there is no wait to be seated sign, that SL did in fact asked her politely if she would mind waiting at the counter 1-3 times before becoming more direct towards her and that she refused to leave and knew there were others there before her waiting for a table. Again do remember we do have other customers that were there this night that did in fact hear what was said and how it went down. We do thank them for their support as well.

Great response to the above post Micheal! :)

I am one of the very happy customers who saw how Michael and SL treated all customers regardless how packed and impatient the customers got, while handling the orders promptly and still put on a smiling face to each request and order.

It gives me great pleasure to patronize your shop and taste the wonderful pzza you’ve made, while educating me on the different styles of pizza from new york, chicago and even Italy. Going out of the way and keeping your customers well educated while tossing dough is certainly no easy feat, and I definitely will be back again for more. =)

Things like this do happen sometimes when you work with a wood fire oven at 750 to 800 degrees and if we ever black one out too much on the bottom we of course admit it, give them a new one and use the old one for a hockey puck or a table leg stabilizer LOL. Steve so sorry for any wait period you had to go through and if any of our other guests ever encounter the above, please do let us know we will take care of it right on the spot.

Hey Steve my friend, you do know you can always pick and choose your own toppings on our pizzas or even B.Y.O. (build your own.) My friends, it is not simply tomato paste hehe, it is our very own mixture of seasonings and herbs that give it its’ very own unique taste.

Steve, be sure to come up to me at the counter and yell hello so I know you are there. Next week we are having Fresco Pizza, no sauce, no cheese, just the base coated in olive oil and fresh minced garlic then cooked in our wood fire oven. After we cooked the base we then will top it with rocket (arugula), fresh cut tomatoes, feta cheese, black olives and a drizzle of olive oil. Very light, frequent and very organic. I’m sure you will like it very much, my wife discovered this little treasure and those we have tested it on loved it very much.

I’ll be going over for this! Hey …. maybe on Wednesday then.
    Anyone wanna join me? ;)
It’s always pleasing to know that you’re coming up with new creations on a random basis.

I can’t imagine a stagnant menu for the whole year. Or lifetime.

Zune and iPod: Most people compare the Zune to the Touch, but after seeing how slim and surprisingly small and light it is, I consider it to be a rather unique hybrid that combines qualities of both the Touch and the Nano. It’s very colorful and lovely OLED screen is slightly smaller than the touch screen, but the player itself feels quite a bit smaller and lighter. It weighs about 2/3 as much, and is noticeably smaller in width and height, while being just a hair thicker.

We went there a few days ago and my entire family was impressed by the quality of the food. We ordered two pizzas both half and half as there are so many choices to pick from. I think this place will go a long way in offering top food for Ipoh, pizza hut cannot do what these guys do. The pizzas are very good and of a good size, however the place is small and tightly packed without a lot of room to move. It was a little warm in there also, but they were fixing the ac when we were there. I have not seen any other place like this in Ipoh or KL before, so this is what “real” pizza or real American pizza is suppose to be like, we loved it and will be back for much more.

I agree with Steve (January 17 post).

I m doubtful. I went there on Feb15, 2010, 2nd day of chinese new year on 7pm something like that, total 6 of us.

The foods and drinks over there are far from my expectation.

I ask them whether any side-dishes such as chicken wings, etc. The waitress say – ‘We are not pizza hut’. I m curious, why they compare themselves with pizza-hut ? Ok no problem at all, I ask her to suggest us what they served the best.

We order 2 pizzas (half bluecheese half chesses topping + ham topping), 1 Spaghetti, 1 tuna salad, 4 cappuccino, 1 espresso, 1 100 plus.

1st serve – Tuna salad, normal.
2nd – 4 Cappuccino(s) served, 3 in 1 coffee mixer are much better than them.
    3rd – Spaghetti, tasteless.
    4th – espresso, tasteless, i can’t think that i m drinking espresso – very light favor.
5th – pizza served, pizzas are over-cooked and bottom layer are seriously burned. Taste are bitter.

I ask the waitress n she say is like that, and i ask her to try herself, she refuse to do that. Honestly, i’m not enjoying myself over there.

Dear Eric, I do apologize you had a bad experience there in our place and hope you will allow us to try to make it up to you one day, however I would also like to address a few of the points you raised.
1st We never had tuna salad at any time in our place, we did have a tuna pizza and a tuna pasta, which became one of our most requested pasta from returning customers who had ordered it in the past, we ran this special for 2 and ½ weeks.
2-4 we offer Lavazza Coffee, which is Italy’s number one espresso and coffee while Illy is the number one outside of Italy. Everyone has their own opinion on coffees and we do receive a lot of compliments on our coffee. While we are not a coffee house we do try to offer a decent cup at a very affordable price, I do apologize we were not able to make it to your expectations.
5 Pizzas, If you did have a seriously burned pizza (and we have stated in the past this can happen at times) you could have at anytime contacted us and we would have replaced it. All of our employees are taught what constitutes a “burned” pizza and what is a Charred pizza. All wood fire pizzas should have black and slight bitter marks on the bottom, as long as less than 20% of the bottom is black it is considered a perfect wood fire pizza, anything more than that is considered burned. While I do appreciate the customers view, w2e have had several customers who had never had wood fire pizza before and had only Pizza Hut. To them they thought their pizzas were burned and bitter when in fact it was a perfectly cooked pizza with a little charring on the bottom and some blackening on the top. Then again, we have had pizzas go out that were over cooked and we try to fix every customer that we can.

Lastly, the reason for comparing us to Pizza Hut was probably because we are the only two companies in Ipoh that cater to pizzas and that a lot of our costumers compare us to Pizza Hut. However, we do not really compare ourselves to them, pizza hut is a full service restaurant we are not, we are a pizzeria and we are non-halal.

My 1st visit was on the 8/3/10 after receiving good comments from my friends. I ordered The Hog and Garlic Parmesan Knots to share with my wife. The pizza was good while the Garlic Parmesan Knots was not bad. The downfall was the Americano I ordered which was very normal similiar to our Msia Kopi-O. Very lack of beverage like fruit juice.Need more improvement.

    Dear KF,

Thank you for your comments, first let me address the lack of beverage, please remember we are not a Malaysian restaurant, in fact we are not a restaurant per se’ we are a true American Pizzeria and because of that we offer actually more than most pizzeria’s in America offer for drinks which is just soft drinks. This is a fast food establishment not too unlike McDonald’s or KFC except we make everything fresh. We try to keep costs down as well as time in preparing items.

As for the coffee, again let me apologize to people about this, we offer Lavazza Coffee and we have the machine set to the recommended amount, while we do our very best to please everyone, we obviously are not able to do that as each person has their own ideas on how they want their coffees to be, some want very strong while others want very weak. We try to set aroma and strength to the recommended amount of that in Italy.

Again please remember we are not a restaurant like Pizza Hut, etc, but a limited fast food place that actually specializes mainly in pizzas, while offering a few other items. For a pizzeria,, our menu is actually quite extensive as it is, we do hope in time as more and more people in Ipoh become familiar with the idea of a pizzeria they will also begin to appreciate our menu. Lastly, we do offer weekly specials that change every week and this in itself allows us to offer more than most other places as well.

We thank everyone for their comments and suggestions and will continue to try our very best to meet everyone’s expectations.
