Michelangelo’s Pizzeria @ Ipoh – Celebrations

NEW!! (January 2011) – Giant Cinnamon Rolls, Tuna Spaghetti & Jalapeno Mac & Cheese
Baby Back Ribs Pizza Promotion (ended in Oct 2010) – http://www.j2kfm.com/baby-back-ribs-pizza-michelangelos-pizzeria-ipoh-promotion/
Since Michelangelo’s Pizzeria (www) changes their menu and specials of the week/month from time to time, this post will be constantly being updated with the latest promotions from Ipoh’s most beloved pizzeria, specials of the week (they change at blistering speed, so you’d better check the latest updates on this page) and maybe a contest or two in the future.
Elevated on those huge but hollowed Heinz tomato paste cans, the pizzas at Michelangelo’s Pizzeria are never short of fresh, quality ingredients.
Currently, Michelangelo’s Pizzeria is offering a special MEATBALL Pizza (scroll down for a better look), with Italian style of chunky and dense balls of pork laced with herbs and spices, generously thrown on the dough with melted mozzarella and fresh tomato paste. If you’re a meatball lover, you CAN’T give this a miss !!! For limited time only!
Meatball Pizza & Chicken of the Sea (Tuna, Onions, Pineapples)
Good thing about dining at Michelangelo’s Pizzeria is that you can mix and match your pizzas, and the ingredients that go onto the base. Select up to two choices for each pizza (don’t worry, you won’t be paying an arm and a leg … unless you decide to order 4 varieties in ONE pizza, then Michael might come at you with a cleaver!) so you can taste different varieties without having to order excessively.
The Hog (Italian Pork Sausages, Smoked Streaky Bacon, Virginia Ham) and Bacon & Eggs
The “Chicken of the Sea” or tuna, onions and pineapple pizza is also a special item NOT featured permanently in the menu. Though with much persuasion (possibly a wink or two), you can try to coerce them into inserting the combination into the permanent menu.
And you really should, for the chunks of briny tuna with loads of chopped onions and cubed pineapples made a beautiful coalition; enough to send one into a seafood frenzy.
My personal favourite pizza from the list? The HOG of course. With an overload of PORKY goodness; bacons, sausages and hams, how can one resist this barbaric/carnivorous creation?!! Pray they do not take this out from the menu, for if you’re in dire need for protein, THIS IS IT. The Bacon And Eggs pizza is also a terrific combination, with overeasy eggs cracked on top of the layers of cheese, then topped with smokey streaked bacons.
Spicy Creamy Chicken Stroganoff – A fiery twist to the classic
Bacon-wrapped Jalapeno Pepper stuffed with Cheese – Be prepared to breathe fire ……
Other specials currently on the menu include the spaghetti topped with creamy Chicken Stroganoff, but this one has a fiery kick to it. If you’re good with spicy food, then give their Grilled Bacon-wrapped Jalapeno Pepper with Cheese a try. Want even more kick? Try the peppers WITH the seeds intact!!!! (Ask for Meg to please your sadistic palate)

food and service has always been great at this place. the beef stroganoff spaghetti we had last week was good – creamy and yummy. Just one disappointment – they no longer sell their trademark cheese cake. Michael – will you please reintroduce this cake back into your menu? 🙂 🙂

Haha, I am sure Michael will be glad to reintroduce the cake into his menu. Or maybe they’re thinking of doing something else. A tiramisu? A panna cotta? Gelato ice cream?
Oh by the way, they have a Lemon Curd in their menu now; a creamy custard with a tangy hint.
[Reply]
Actually James we do have a Tiramisu offered Michelangelo’s Pizzeria and have had it for several months now, even has a little M on the top of it. We will introduce more and new desserts over the next coming months. We just want to make certain anything we offer meets our standards and that of our guests. The Lemon Custard is very close to our cheese cake we used to have, the tastes are exactly the same minus the crust. We will be reintroducing our cheese cake once again one of these months. It does take a lot of time in preparing and to bake, that is one of the reasons we switched to the lemon custard instead.
Soon we will be offering a few new pasta specials over the next coming weeks and we will be bringing back our BBQ Baby Back Ribs as a special again sometime in the next few months, we’ll keep you informed on our Facebook page.
Thank you all for your support we do appreciate it very much and will continue to try to bring you the very best in your neighborhood pizzeria.

We went to Michelangelo on last Friday night and I was exciting to try the Giant Cinammon Roll u introduce (I’m a big fans of Cinammon). However, a lil disappointment, I found the Cinammon roll is a bit too sweet to me. But I really love THE HOG pizza and the Bacon is the BEST!! Also, not to forget the Tiramisu is also very soft and it melted once i put into my mouth.

I like your place as we went there last Thursday 21st July about 8.20pm with my family and a French friend. Ordered 3 pizzas – 2 Bacon and eggs and blue cheese. The bacon and eggs reminds me of my north of French experience last year. Quite tasty and not too charred.
However for blue cheese, the amount of blue cheese served was kinda “short” (due to the cost) – this is the comment from my French friend, Mr. Benoit Pluchon.
We also ordered the Baby Back Ribs but will not order this next time as we found it to be quite plain (sorry to say).
The decorations are beautiful and nicely arranged and after our meal, we smoked outside whereas my kids were thrilled to find a reading corner which is rather interesting.
Another comments from my friend, Mr. Pluchon is that the waitresses who served us were only friendly when we entered and leave (welcome and good-bye). Whenever, we are being served, the waitresses wasn’t smiling even when my friend, Mr. Pluchon tried to smile to them. I have worked as a waiter back in the 90s and no matter how tired or busy we are, we will always smile to our customers because they will be appreciated our hospitality and return one day to support us. After all this is a hospitality industries.
Overall, this is a good restaurant to go to compared to Pizza Hut and hopefully will be able to branch out throughout Perak and Malaysia…May your business prosper and give Pizza Hut a run for their money….Cheers

Thank you for your comments we do appreciate them very much. I also appreciate your friend’s view regarding the blue cheese pizza. Yes I would agree that in France there would be more blue cheese on the pie, however in America, people are a tab bit more shy when it comes to blue cheese therefore we do use a little less as all of our pizzas are made to be just like you would find back in the US.
As for the waitress, I will look into this, it could have been several reasons: a new one training, an old one getting ready to leave, etc. No excuses though for not smiling, I agree with you completely and thank you for your comment.
I do apologize about the baby back ribs, we do try to please most people, but like all foods, we are not always able to strike it gold on all food with everyone, People do have their own tastes. Our ribs are made the way my wife and I like them back in the states around the Chicago area therefore we make them the same way here. However our current rib nights (every Wednesday and Thursday) is now changed to the first weekend of every month. There is a lot of work that goes into making the ribs and therefore we found ourselves a little over stretched and it was sneaking into our time for our weekly specials.
As for branching out, if we ever did do such a thing it would only be limited to Ipoh and only Ipoh. While we appreciate people wanting us to expand to other areas, we want to stay true to the town that has been good to us for so many years and keep it as its own little special pizzeria but thank you very much for your kind words.

I can see I’m not the first person to complain about the loud noise. But judging by the feedback from the owner, it won’t get any softer.
I read plenty of compliments about the food. But no one is writing about how much they enjoy the loud music. So please interpret it constructively instead of justifying the extremely loud music as part of the theme. Lower the volume, make the dining experience more pleasant.
My friend warned me about bringing my earplugs along. Turns out, she ain’t kidding.

One more thing, before we left I told the waiter that I’ll be leaving as I could not possibly sit in a table which was meant for one anyway and he nodded. Another group of people were seen leaving meaning there were 3 unoccupied bigger tables. I won’t mind if I’m asked to share my table if the place is full.

I replied to your post here and below down below. By the way the table you are talking about is actually meant for two people and we usually sit around 5-6 groups of two every night at that table and have been doing so for more than a year now. I believe the table you are referring to is the one against the wall next to the wall drawing and near the wood fire pit. I explained below the reasons for why we sit people the way we do. I do hope that will explain in more detail and answer your concerns.
If you would like, you may contact me directly at any time by calling the store and requesting to speak to me or asking James, the owner of this blog for my email and I would be very willing to discuss this further with you and answer any concerns you may still have.

I went there at 8.45pm on 8th Sept and was dissapointed at one of the Indian waiter’s manners. There were 2 four seater tables and 1 for a 2 seater available. The 2 seater table was push right to the wall and patrons were seated so close that its not possible for me to squeeze in my legs and the other empty table with the corners touching this table which I am supposed to be seated. I asked this Indian waiter if we may be seated in this other table instead but was told that was meant for 4 people and I ask him how can I sit in that teeny weeny space. He then sarcastically replied and pointed to me ONE sit here and ONE sit there. We then left feeling dissapointed and angry.

We do apologize for your inconvenience, he should not have been sarcastic. However, as you yourself noted there were only two four seater tables left and the one for two people. We do have to sit accordingly unfortunately. If we sit two people at a four person table then we will have four people perhaps waiting around outside for a table while there was an open table already there for two people. In other words, when we are busy and there are just a few tables we do sit according to table size, seating the maximum amount of people to a table in order to ensure smooth movement. We only have 15 tables of various sizes, before we had the two and three seater tables we had only 11 tables and we had a lot of customers that would complained about the waiting time and would walk away before ever making it inside because they would end up waiting around 40 minutes for a table.
Again we do apologize for the seating arrangements, but we do try to do the very best with the very limited space we have. Therefor if we are busy we will seat either one or two people at a two seater table and three to four people at a four seater table and so on and so on.
We also have to wait to sit people if there are more than 6 people to a group and only enough have shown up for one table. For sizes of 6 or more people we have to give two to three tables, but if there are only enough for just one table then they will have to wait until the rest show up otherwise we would have an empty table just sitting there while we could have sat another group while the first party was waiting for their friends. There have been many occasions where there is a party of 7 but only 4 or 5 (enough for one table) have shown up and we gave them two tables but the rest of their group did not show up for at least 20-30 more minutes and we could have sat and fed another group during that time. We also used to have around 20 people waiting outside to get in and they would wait around 40 minutes. We have managed to bring this number down to around 6 people waiting outside and the waiting time down to about 10-20 minutes because of our seating arrangements.
While we do understand your situation, we also have to ask our customers to understand ours as well in that we have very limited tables and therefore we try very hard to do the very best we can especially during our peak hours between 6:45 – 9:00 P.M.
As for being crowded, our response to this is that we are not a typical family restaurant, we are in fact a Pizzeria which is very similar to a cafe and / or diner in America which is very loud, tight fitting, crowded and fast food. By no means are we an up-scale dining establishment. In fact orginally we did not want any tables at all, instead we were going to install counters where everyone would have to stand at to eat. Most pizzerias only have either one counter or 3-5 tables at most since most of the business is either delivery or take away.
We trust this explains a little more of why we operate the way we do, coning into MichelangelO’s Pizzeria is suppose to be a little more than just the food, it is also suppose to be a bit of an experience, to come to a place that operates the same way it would in the US in a city like Chicago and / or some paces in New York City. We do not practice fusion nor do we try to Malaysianize our store in any way, we want the whole experience to be as close to the real thing as if you were actually in the States.

I can be considered a regular at this place and I’ve never felt intimidated by any waiter/waitress there. We always follow the directions given by them about where to sit because we know that the restaurant is not big and they have to be really careful of seating arrangements. We never had any problem. The Michelangelo’s Pizzeria experience is simply great. Relax and enjoy the best pizza in town.

Loud dining in America? By that I hope you’re referring to a bar or Mexican restaurant that only caters to Mexicans. (Although most taquerías that I’d patronised in the past proved to be quiet and quite decent compared to the usual Malaysian restaurants and kopi tiams.) I’ve been in enough restaurants stateside to know that white people mostly like to dine in peace, as opposed to being pounded by obnoxious rap, trashy techno, or tarty music like Rihanna, Lady Gaga, or, urgh, SNSD. It’s only back in Malaysia, and only in recent times that people start to shift from pleasant and conversational dining to utterly dismal “ecstasy themed” and/or karaoke dining. Now, I have to admit, I don’t really know many places to eat in Ipoh, being a reluctant resident of Taiping. (Yes, facepalm.) And I certainly haven’t had the chance to step inside Michelangelo’s. Still, the pictures above have already sold your place. I can’t wait to check it out. But seriously, keep the music volume low enough so people don’t have to raise their voice. Pizza is not viking food. People shouldn’t have to slam their jugs on the table and cry out their lungs to be heard. Loud music (especially karaoke) is also out of place in a family oriented restaurant, mainly because, well, it cause deafness, for one, and secondly, pizzas are very dry and too much of it can cause sore throat. Now imagine if you have to talk loudly (over the loud music) the whole evening, and down too many slices of that dry pizza, now what should happen the next day? Exactly.

I would hope you will let me address your comments above, first yes we do play our music a bit louder than most places here, though not “so” loud you can not talk, but yes you will have to talk a bit louder than normal. The places you have have visited in America I am sure were very nice “family” style “restaurants”. We however are a “fast-food” Rock n Roll place and there are very man places in the States that do in fact play very loud music. Take for instance: Ed Debevic’s in Chicago and L.A. (you wait more than an hour to get inside and there is even a loud DJ and waters dance on tables) there is Paul’s Pizzeria in Decater and Hard Rock Cafe and Planet Hollywood as well as the Starlite Diner and many other places. In the states we have many types from very silent to extreme loud.
Secondly we have never played Lady Gaga or Rihanna, our music is either piped in over the internet from the US playing Classic Rock from the 60’s to the early 90″s or retro of the 80’s. Or we hand picked the songs and play them there. In fact we are one of the only places in Ipoh you will have the chance to hear some of this type of music or variety.
As for pizza being “dry and too much of it can cause a sore throat” not sure where you been eating your pizzas, but pizzas should never be dry nor cause a sore throat, sore mouth yes from the cheese being too hot and out pizzas are cooked at 750 degrees F.
Lastly as stated on here or other posts when we play the music up, there is actually a lot of research and reasons that go into it and we were very careful in making that choice., A bit of business by the way, the facts are when we have played the music at a softer level sales were actually down and when played at a louder level the sales actually are on average considerably higher than when not. Not while most people may just brush that off and say they do not believe it, but there is a lot of market research that shows that as well and what owner would ever want to “drive his/her sales down”
We hope you will stop by if you have not and please do feel free to sstand on the counter and dance to a song, we do in fact give free pizzas to customers who are willing to stand up there and dance – seriously, looking forward to meeting you. P.S. I am an American who grew up in Chicago.
thx for the post you share!!! I’ll be going back to Ipoh end of this month!! currrently surveying for nice food and this is definitely is at the top of my list!!! Terrible experience with this joint. Went there with my family of 5 person. Ask the staff to join the table for us as their single table could not fit us all. The staff told us that they cannot join the table because their so called American boss does not allowed so . Told them and explain that we do not wish to sit on separate table, then the staff went into the kitchen and ask someone for permission to join the table. Out come a chubby indian cook and pretended to be a big shot mafia and told us that their boss la la la and so so so. We got disgusted and left. By the way the pizza over there is sloppy and bacon look like its steam more than oven baked. Please do not pretend to be anything american if clearly you cant be. I am sorry you had such a terrible experience at our establishment. However if you were seated at one of the three corner tables, our staff was correct in seating 5 people there. We have been opened for business for about 2.5 years now and have literally sat hundreds of tables of 5 at those tables. If however it is a very slow night or right after opening or before closing and we are not crowded we can then join the two tables together. While I fully understand your complaint, we do take into consideration family size, the actual size of people and if it is too tight we will then join two tables. However more times than not there is room (yes it is slightly tight) for 5 people but some still want more room. While we would love to be able to accommodate everyone, we simply cannot. We have very limited seating and we need to move tables during rush hours in order to turn a profit which in truth is part of the reason we are in business. Therefore we do need to manage our tables. While the “majority’ of our customers are understanding and satisfied with that, there are some that do not or will not understand. All we can do is apologize and hope they can understand, but we are not always able to please everyone every time.
As for the place being American and the “so called American Boss” we all I can say is I was born and raised in America from 1967 until I graduated university and am living in Malaysia now since 1999. Our place if based off a a Chicago concept of a neighborhood pizzeria, not a upper-scale family restaurant., We are a fast food establishment and do try to give everyone a good and happy time there.
We do thank you for your comment however and as always will consider what you have posted and will hope that one day you will stop back in and try to please you again later, you may also ask for me anytime you wish and I’ll make sure that staff lets me know so I can meet with you and try to please your experience there if you ever do choose to come back.

I am sorry you do feel that way, My staff did not give favor to another table in which you caimed they did, there was a mistke made in which my staff was corrected on. However the customer is “not” always correct, if that was the case then virtually no business could actually survive. We only have two “rules) as you call them, one is we do not seat incomplete parties. This was made after several months of being open where people would come in and say there will be about 6-8 people but only 2-3 where there. They would tell us their people were on the way and will be there in a few minutes, however in several cases their people did not show up until well after 30 minutes. Now I understand why to some customers that may not seem like a problem, but for a restaurant this can be a problem. Because we then had people stadning outside waiting for 45 minutes to na hour for a table, many times there would be a party of 2-4 people waiting while inside they coudl see only 2 people sitting at two tables for 8 people. This seemedd unfair that 2 people were holding onto an empty table for more than 30 minutes while outside there were a full party that was already there and ready to sit, order and eat. The average time a person usually dines at a table is roughly about 45 minutes to an hour and 10 minutes at our place. We only have 15 tables of various sizes and so if a party is half there, holding onto an empty table and their people do not show up until 30 minutes later, that would then mean they will have the table for an additonal 30-45 minutes or for about an hour and ahalf to two hours. Restaurants need to turn over tables so many times a night an order to make a profit. Therefore once we started the policy of not seating incomplete tables the waiting times were greatly reduced to about 10 minutes to 25 minutes on average. This we started so more people coudl have a chance at a table. Also sometimes customers will tell us there is only 6 poeople and then once we sit them, another 2-3 will show up.
As for your comment about all I do is apologize and that I have a lot of negative comments, if you had read all these reviews as you stated you would actually see and notice that most people actually have very positive comments about our place and our service, there is really only a handful that have had some problems. And for the most part we did address those problems. At the same time we also as a buisiness have to sometimes still go the way we think is best. Yes we do say we our an American place. What we mean by that is when you come into our place we will run it as if you were in America, trying to give yu as close as an experience as you will have as if you were there. We do not Malaysianize our place in anyway from food, drinks to music to managment. We are not the only place here like that. In KL you can go to Plent Hollywood, Hard Rock Cafe, where the music is also very lour and there is a policy of not seating incomplete parties. You can also go to Chili’s in Penang and you will find a sign outside there saying the same thing about not seating incomplete parties.
Sometimes Customers also need to understand that those working in a restaurant our people and our doing the very best and the policies they have there are for everyone and to give everyone a fair chance and dining experience.
The only other rule we have is no outside food or beverage allowed. And you would be surprised at just how many people do in fact try to bring in outside food or drinks and also try to state the customer is always right. But I am sure you would agree that is not so also. After all why would you go to a restaurant and bring in food from McDonalds there. if you do not like the food of the restaurant or do not eat it, you should not go there then. So I am sorry you feel the way you do, but my staff was friendly to you that night, and I already did respond to you on another site both in public on the site and in a private message to you on the site and ever asked for you to give me a call (which you failed to do so) I do know very well what happened that night, and also there were tao other tables of customers who were there when you were there and who felt the need to contact us the next day and a few days later and said that you were actually very rude to my staff and that my staff did in fact try to help you out. Again you are more than welcome to contact me directly.

I very support on what Micheal had mentioned. We can’t be mind set with ‘customer is always right’. This statement makes me thinking of selfishness embeded inter-personality. We must always be considerable. The way of micheal’s rule and management is good to plant a good manner and culture among all. So-called bad habit – late, last time not able to turn out behaviour, will be improved.
