Back to Publika for A Taste of KLonuts @ Dessert StormAugust 21, 2013 | 5,876 views
Still the “Revolutionary” Mall in my books, Publika has this air around it that draws the weekend crowd over for a carefree time.
Slightly more than a year and a half later, I was back at Publika last weekend. So many new eateries have opened for business; and can you believe it when I first wrote about Ben’s General Food Store, that The Red Beanbag, Fatboy’s Burger and Swich Cafe were not even present?
Latest ‘craze/fad’ to hit town? Cronuts. Or rather, known as KLonuts @ Dessert Storm.
With Wednesday almost gone, it’s a matter of counting down the hours (or hair-raising minutes in the case of one gearing into overdrive to settle unfinished business) before the weekend. If you are suffering from midweek blues, go grab yourself a slice of mooncake, sit back and enjoy the barrage of photos to follow.
Not many malls embrace the concept of elegance in simplicity like Publika.
Though not as quirky as my first visit to Publika; the interesting clash of elements, bright sunlight from the high glass panels and a very liberal stroke of creative arts create a shopping environment that’s beyond the ordinary.
I have only been to Ben’s (end of 2011 I remember), and ever since then have not returned. The many rave reviews of The Red Beanbag and Swich Cafe got me hooked from time to time, but time literally flew by the year and a half.
Visit The Red Beanbag’s Facebook page for an idea of what they are, and what they serve.
Swich Cafe on the other hand; creates ripples among the cake-lovers community with their signature mangosteen cake, cempedak cake and other local-inspired creations.
Journal by Plan B explores the geeky world of a nerd with typewriters, skyscraping book cases, desks/chairs and journals.

Masak-Masak @ B.I.G (Ben’s Independent Grocer) now?
S.Wine Cafe (non-Halal cafe) & Plan B Roasters are part of the islands of food haven parked within the supermarket.
A cozy corner built upon fake grasses, Desserts Storm is bound to …erm, take the desserts world by storm? Bad pun completely intentional.
Pick up a sandwich from B*wiched, a cup of coffee from Plan B Roaster, a croissant from Bread and maybe a KLonut or two (a wackier name for the trademarked “cronut”), then choose a favourite corner and waste the afternoon away …
The KLonuts of the Day? Peanut Butter & Caramel, Lemon Curd Meringue & Vanilla Custard & Rose. For RM7/USD2.2 each.
Lazy to type the entire hoo-ha/hype/craze/madness over cronuts (croissant + doughnuts), read from Wikipedia HERE. First brought to our shores by Delectable by Su, the BIG Group jumped in the fray (strike while the iron … or rather, deep-fryer is still hot) and produced their version of the popular diet-destroyer; calling theirs KLonuts. No brownie points for guessing how that came about, sorry.
Three flavours on offer at any one time, I sampled the Peanut Butter & Caramel, and the Lemon Curd Meringue. Not the most bang for your bucks, be warned. The KLonuts are two-bites at most. The Lemon Curd flavour had that slight edge thanks to the tartness from the curd that balanced out the sweetness, and overall guilt.
However, the cronuts craze pales in comparison to the initial doughnuts craze brought over by Big Apple and J.Co (to some extent, Krispy Kreme) where you must have been traumatized by the endless lines of greedy souls (whom must have suffered the consequences of one too many of a glazed doughnut and now have outgrown their S-sized shirts) religiously trying out new flavours every week.
Me? I probably will return for the outrageously-named sandwiches at B*wiched; Tuna Turner, Christina Arugula and Salmon Hayek sounded like a riot, no?
*Dessert Storm, B*wiched, Plan B Roaster, Bread and Shucked are all located within Ben’s Independent Grocer.
