JJ Cakes & Swiss Rolls @ De Mouth Restaurant, Ipoh

JJ Swiss Rolls

One of the evergreen classic, an “Ipoh-only production” is the famous swiss rolls from JJ Cakes. I’ve wrote about JJ Cakes way back in May last year (JJ Cakes – Sweet Temptations), when they were still operating from the back of a paint shop. Yup, heard that right, a PAINT SHOP, on Jalan Tokong in Ipoh, directly opposite of Tow Boo Keong Temple in Pasir Puteh, Ipoh.

Collage JJ Cake House

The lady boss herself, in all her glory moments, packing the delectable swiss rolls into the special carrier bag, a privilege gift for purchases of up to 5 swiss rolls and above

A year and a half later, Jennifer Liau, the proprietor of JJ Cakes had expanded her business to three outlets in Ipoh. The paint shop is still the main premise, though situated a stone’s throw away, in De Mouth Restaurant on the ground floor of Hotel Fairmont on Jalan Raja Permaisuri Bainun (previously Jalan Kampar) JJ Cakes has opened a counter to cater to the crowd.

The third outlet is at Inn Cafe, somewhere in Taman Shatin Baru in Pasir Puteh area of Ipoh. (Addresses to come at the end of the post).

The complete list of all the cakes and swiss rolls. Bear in mind that you have to call in advance to book for the cakes, and not every single variety of the swiss rolls is available on a daily basis.

The best sellers include Coffee Walnut, Chocolate Hazelnut, Pandan Custard, Fresh Durian and Mango, as well as the higher-priced cream cheese varieties.

As the swiss rolls are manufactured on a daily basis, you can be assured of the freshness (no preservatives added), and quality ingredients used in the rolls. Comparatively speaking, the swiss rolls from JJ Cakes are generally less sweet and decadent than its counterparts. Only fresh fruits and vegetables are incorporated into the rolls of sweet delights, ensuring maximum flavours and minimum artificial taste.

Priced from RM8 – RM 15 per roll, JJ Cakes’ Swiss rolls should be kept refrigerated at all times, and highly recommended to be eaten in 3 days, for there’s no preservatives added. Keep them for one week, and you’ll notice the deterioration in the flavour, as Jennifer herself proclaimed: “The freshness may be compromised, hence the natural flavours of the ingredients may ‘evaporate’ as time goes by.” Don’t say I did not warn you. :)

P/S : Currently JJ Cakes is having a Buy 5-Free-1 Swiss Rolls promotion.

the cakes are supposedly equally good, but have to be pre-ordered.
but the swiss rolls are really good stuff.

to me only swiss rools are good… especially the coffee flavour.

but i was once pre-ordered 2 birhtday cakes there, taste below average and i would consider way too expensive. what i really don’t like was the service. i was in a rush when collecting the cake… i specifically asked for some birthday wishes to be written on the cake (which is a very very simpy instruction for a pre-ordered cake) but end up they did not write anything on it. what worsten was they don’t even give me the candles. so i won’t go there anymore eventhought the swiss rolls are good. :-p

Hello, I have just been introduced to JJ Swiss Rolls. Bought the pandan custard flavour to try yesterday. Taste is good but I prefer it there wasn’t so much custard spread over the roll. Does taste fresh.
Does anyone know if I’ll be able to hand-carry the durian flavoured swiss roll in the plane to Singapore?

    Hi there Karen.
I am not sure about hand-carrying the durian rolls on a plane, for I highly doubt they won’t notice the fragrance (okay, maybe stench). Do check with the respective authorities before pursuing this.
