The Fairway @ Royal Perak Golf Club, Ipoh

September 20, 2009 | 6,060 views| 22 Comments » | Print This Post Print This Post

(UPDATED 25/4/2010) – Here’s an e-mail from the management of The Fairway. Guess this will clear all the doubts.

Dear Editor,
We highly appreciate your valuable reviews about our restaurant. We are here to clarify, that we are indeed open to public. While making payments, our staffs will ask guests for the membership card, because members will get discounts for dinning in.

Thank you again for the effort to promote our restaurant and introducing Ipoh for the name of “The Heaven for good food’. Well Done!!!

Thank you.

Royal Perak Golf Club

The Fairway is a brand new restaurant in Royal Perak Golf Club (RPGC) in Ipoh, under the same management umbrella of MP (which is operating two other outlets in Ipoh, both in Greentown). If you’re wondering, should you apply for a membership before being granted access to the restaurants? (Kizuna  One is the other, serving Japanese food – which coincidentally, has its roots back in the original Kizuna over at Ipoh Garden East.) Rest assured that you can save up to RM27k (!!!) for the exclusive membership, and still waltz in with pride, and dine like no other.

The Fairway

The Fairway Restaurant – Serving a mix of Western and Chinese cuisine

Fresh Fruit Juices

Fresh Fruit Juices – Notice the custom-made stirrers with the logo of the club? Cool.

The menu resembles the one from MP so much, it’s almost uncanny. Down to the pictures of the food, descriptions, and even the prices. You may think that dining here will burn a hole in your wallet, being a high-end club and all, but surprisingly they keep the cost low and set the same price range across the outlets. An indeed well-planned business venture, for the premium location would definitely promise a steady stream of patrons. And The Fairway is renovated to fit for any function, given the spacious facade and an outdoor seating area that overlooks the lush, endless greens of the golf course.

Chicken Chop with Mushroom Sauce

Grilled Chicken Chop with Mushroom Sauce @ RM13.50

The crispy chicken chop, still juicy and tender after the grilled process, was a stunner. Served with either mushroom or black pepper sauce, potato wedges, and mixed salad, the price was justified for the portion served. Simple, yet one of the item that always managed to deliver back in the other MP Restaurant over in Greentown. The coleslaw was a bit off though, according to KYT who was digging into his chicken chop with much relish.

Grilled Lamb Chop

Sizzling Grilled Lamb Chop (RM16.50)

Mr Z’s grilled lamb chop came in two HUGE chunks of lamb cuts, doused generally with the piquant black pepper sauce. Only to realise that there were more bones than meat. LOL. Seriously, they could have improved on this, and not serve the customer with an almost unbelievably huge chunk of bone on the hot plate. Tastewise? Credits to be given where they’re due, the lamb chop was delicious nonetheless, with the sauce complementing the meat very well. The sight of crinkle-cut fries notwithstanding though. Jacket potatoes, or even mashed potatoes would be a better alternative.

Australian Rib Eye Steak (150G)

Australian Rib Eye @ RM15.50 (150g)

The steaks are served in two sizes, one being the larger 250g (cost a little under RM30 for all cuts), and the other being 150g (for about RM15 and above). For lunch, I’d highly suggest to go for the smaller yet ample cut of 150g. You wouldn’t want to doze off in the afternoon while completing your tasks in the office!

The rib eye was done medium, resulting in a sweet and juicy steak, albeit a little on the chewy side. But still full of flavour, topped with a dollop of garlic butter and a side of peppery brown sauce (which was not necessary, given the thoroughly marinated meat). The jacket potato and boiled vegetables with creamy thousand island sauce completed the ensemble. Well worth the price paid, I would say.

The Fairway offers an extensive range of Chinese dishes as well, and provide various set menu for larger groups of diners. An additional 5% government tax is chargeable, but there’s no service charge. Another feather in the cap to be mentioned here, is that the service was reasonably good, with most of  the staff speaking comprehensible English and attentive.

P/S : With the RPGC membership card, you’re entitled to a whopping 15% discount off your meal !

you’re welcomed. if Japanese food’s up your alley, try Kizuna One beside The Fairway, a little pricey though.

yesterday i went to the worst restaurant in ipoh. Both the service and foods were terrible. The restaurant is call josephine ( its situated in ipoh garden south , inside the parkson ria’s old building).
First of all, you must make yourself free for at least one hour because your food won’t arrive after 30 minutes even if you just ordered garlic bread only. The design inside actually not too bad but the services they provide will make you feel like you in hell. The waitress…is damn rude ( bare in mind the price is those high end restaurant prices). Me and my family ordered ice blended coffee , garlic breads, pancakes, salads etc. You will be surprised what actually arrived at your table. The ice blended is ….actually not really blended but a lot of ice cubes floating inside your coffee( but they charged like rm 12 to rm 14 for the ice blended coffee… more than coffee beans.)Then, the under baked garlic bread arrived. We had to ask them to send the garlic bread back to the kitchen to rebake it. ( very reluctantly by that waitress). Then this ‘wonderful’ waitress come and clean up the table while we still eating our food. We asked the waitress to stop cleaning first, then she just turned rudely to us and say “NO”. I got the shock of my life. The nightmare didn’t end there, then the pancake haven’t even arrived yet after 1 hour in the restaurant. We asked like 3 times for the pancake, again, the waitress didn’t bother much. At the end we decided to cancel the pancake as the enviroment inside is so terrible, so that we can get out of this place ASAP!!!
For people who think might want to step in this place again…………… think twice

thanks for writeup on fairway… must agree that the ambience is just right although a bit too posh for an old golf club like rpgc… was there for lunch after a round of golf, the food was good… and the pricing reasonable… service however was a tat too slow as we have to rush back to klumpur after lunch… will try the japanese restaurant the next time i golf there…

The Fairway at Royal Perak Golf Club, Ipoh only serves their members only. If you are a non-member, try not to embarrass yourself by going in, which I did myself with a friend. I came across this restaurant from here and decided to give it try with an Irish friend.

You will come across a sign “No Member Card, No Service” which is a pretty bad start for me. But since I was there already, I asked one of the more friendly Indian stuff that could we dine here by no being a member. She politely give us a nice welcome and brought us into a room with another posh sign “No Short Pants and Sandal”. As a poor Malaysian myself, you can guess what I was wearing in a relaxing evening. But she told me it is fine to use the “Special” room. So we walked in.

A fat Chinese woman (I think her name is Ann Ong) came in later and give us the menu. She soon find out that I was wearing, guess what, a short pants and sandals. It is like I murdered somebody in the golf club. So, I was pretty uncomfortable with the situation and decided “what the hack”, just leave, if they are so up their arse with rules.

Ms Ong actually asked us to stay to my surprise. However, my embarrassing evening had just began. She was speaking in Cantonese right in front of me with another staff regarding how I am not suppose to be there. I was really annoyed and asked her again that if this is causing a lot problems, I can go somewhere else. She insisted us to stay with sneer, which I wasn’t too happy with her attitude at all.

The real tin hat on the story is she requested me for the “Membership Card” when I asked for the bill. She sneer at me again when I said I am not a member of the Royal Perak Golf Club. So now, If you are not a member of the Royal Perak Golf Club, try to avoid the “Fairway” at all cost.

    hi keat.
sad to hear about your experience at The Fairway.

    J2Kfm,

Would suggest you consider checking with Fairway direct. Not sure when I was there last, but I was allowed to dine there. I am sure it was less than 3 months ago.

Lastly, I noticed you missed out an old Ipoh institution from your Western list of restaurants. Scotch Pub. Portions are small and I do end up ordering a second round but food and prices are good.

    Hi Keat,

The problem u got for the Fairway is bcos the fxxking club created the rule to the rental. Pls forgive the Fairway.

The Fxxking club hangered up a panel “Open for Public” but the set the shit rules on rentals. So we shall say that is the most good club & club management in the world.

I’ve been to Fairway a lot of time but no one ask me to show the “membership card”. The food there is fantastic and price is reasonable.

Scotch Pub? the food there is so bad and under my expectation because this restaurant used to be very famous with its food. The food price is not worth to what they served.
