Klang Food Centre – How ’bout Pau for breakfast instead?

February 28, 2010 | 458 views | 19 Comments »

Constantly bewildered by the repetitive visits to Bah Kut Teh (BKT) restaurants in Klang, when it comes to breakfast in town? Yeah, so Klang’s THE place for possibly the most porky-licious breakfast one could ever have (step aside bacons and sausages!), but then again, how can one stomach the barrage of BKT indulgences morning after mornings, and sometimes even for lunch/dinner?!!!

Hainan Pau @ Klang Food Centre

Unpretentious, no fancy serving platters, nor funky/whimsical decor – Klang Food Centre serves possibly the most authentic and true-blue version of Hainanese pau in Klang

And then this unassuming, almost overshadowed by the countless BKT restaurants in its vicinity (Taman Intan of Klang, THE definite area for BKT hunt if you’re not fond of reaching the traffic-madness of Klang town) comes along, nestled in the middle of a row of shophouses, which of course …. also houses a few famous BKT outlets itself. Remember the famous Teluk Pulai Bak Kut Teh, when we saw Klang-ites and  BKT-aficionados alike getting into squabbles over the BEST BKT Klang has to offer …..

Kong Tau Loh (Botak)’s Seafood Paradise Restaurant @ Taman Chi Liung, Klang

January 18, 2010 | 587 views | 20 Comments »

How does it feel to be dining in the compound of someone else’s house? If you think that’s awkward, well …. think again.

There’s this restaurant (or as close to a restaurant as this premise can be) in Taman Chi Liung of Klang, which was opened by a former cook from a restaurant (pardon me, but sources unknown and not verified). The name of the restaurant is Seafood Paradise, and I tell you, the array of dishes listed and pictured in their menu is not shabby at all. An impressive range of seafood, meats, vegetables, rice and noodle dishes numbering in the realm of 80-100 items, if my memory serves me right.

Which on most days, it does not. Oh well …….

House Compound Seafood Paradise

Don’t let the miserable patronage deters you, for it was rather early on that evening we went for dinner ….. A second visit revealed the sheer number of customers Seafood Paradise usually has. Crowded to the max.

If you’re thinking, nah …. just another run-of-the-mill ‘Chu Char’ (Chinese style of serving dishes and rice) restaurant, you’re in for a surprise. The innovative dishes conjured up by the proprietor himself (fondly known as ‘Kong Tau Loh’ or Botak/Bald Guy) sounded very inviting, and you just have to browse the menu for vividly-coloured shots of the dishes, paired with descriptions in both Chinese and English, for a general idea on what they serve.

From crabs to prawns and fish, as well as chicken and pork, the manner of serving them is pratically endless, what’s more with the seldom available Crispy Yam Ring (‘Futt Poot’) with a variety of fillings, such as Marmite pork ribs, chicken, etc. Guaranteed you’ll find something for everyone – Sweet & Sour/Butter Cream dishehs for the younger ones, Spicy Assam and Curries for the adults, and softer Tofu (beancurd) and greens for the elderly.

Klang Lek Bak Kut Teh

October 8, 2009 | 739 views | 12 Comments »

In my last post, I compared Telok Pulai Bak Kut Teh on Jalan Teluk Pulai, and a spinoff  (?) in Taman Intan, which is easily accessible from the Federal Highway. But along the row of old, somewhat dilapidated shophouses on Jalan Teluk Pulai in Klang, lies ANOTHER gem of a Bak Kut Teh outlet, simply named; Klang Lek.

Klang Teluk Pulai Bak Kut Teh

Bubbling hot cauldron of porky goodness @ Telok Pulai Bak Kut Teh

I’ve successfully earned the ire of Bak Kut Teh aficionados with my post on Klang’s Famous Teluk Pulai Bak Kut Teh, especially those staying in Klang, or born/bred/raised in the royal town of Selangor. Much like how we Ipohans quarrel, fight and swear by his/her own favourite Tauge Ayam (Nga Choy Kai/Bean Sprout Chicken – the undisputed champ of Ipoh street food), and the constant tirade against Lou Wong and/or Onn Kee being over-rated, commercialized and so forth.

Peng Heong Hakka Paikut Restaurant @ Klang

September 16, 2009 | 1,537 views | 28 Comments »

Peng Heong Hakka Paikut Restaurant in Klang takes pride in its impressive 16 years run in the gourmet scene, previously operating at a stall on Lorong Gudang Nanas in Klang. The humble stall has since into its own premise, a corner lot on the same road off Jalan Pasar in Klang.

The exceptionally tender, almost melts-in-mouth texture of the spare ribs marinated and served with a sweetish gravy – Spare Ribs King, no doubt.

“Paikut” refers to spare ribs, and at Peng Heong, their signature Spare Ribs King is a boneless fillet of tender pork served in a variety of portions. Priced from RM6, onwards for a serving, one can opt for the bigger portions at RM8, RM10 and RM20 respectively, proportional to the chunks of meat served with their traditionally-concocted sweet and savoury sauce.
