Motormouth From Ipoh – Malaysian Food & Travel

Apparently yes. ONE hour from 2.30pm-3.30pm on their peak days (weekends/public holidays), and slightly extended operating hours if you’re lucky. I am not going to hide the fact that this was my FIRST time eating the legendary roast pork on the spot from this stall named Chee Kong Roast Pork; or better known as First Garden Roast Pork Stall.

If you remember somehow, a shave more than two years ago, I tasted their unforgettably crunchy, juicy and heavenly roast pork (“siew yuk” in Cantonese) at the Ipoh Hawkers’ Fest back in Dec 2009. The small slab of meat costed me more than RM10 but was memorable for the fact that … the crackling pieces of well-marinated, and perfectly roasted pork got me hooked.

Seremban Grilled Crabs (Foo Yoong Siu Hai) now has invaded Ipoh?!

Apparently yes. The chef (or maybe a group of chefs) that started Crab House Restaurant in Ipoh Garden East recently was previously from Hee Lai Ton Restaurant in Ipoh. Fairly new to the scene, Crab House has already unleashed its magic; creating ripples and waves amongst the crab lovers around town.

We had to be turned away on the first evening due to the overwhelming crowd. However, the adamant egos in us escaped barely unscathed … returning for a second shot on the very next evening. How refreshing and ingenious combination! If this is easily available within walking distance from the office, I bet you they will do some SERIOUS business in PJ!

Always a pleasure to be back home in Ipoh where this blog was born and thrived for years before reaching out to the thousands of food lovers out there. The imminent move to KL since late 2010 thankfully did not hamper my effort to a detrimental extent; still barely catching up with sporadic write-ups featuring hidden gems from nooks and corners of good old Ipoh.

Mydin Mall opened for business in Jelapang not too long ago; a humongous hypermarket that can easily rival the Tesco’s and Giant’s in Ipoh. A second one in Manjoi followed suit within weeks, apparently. AEON Kinta City and AEON Station 18 are both still very much in business and with barely a hiccup in terms of traffic from shoppers, while newer hotels like Tune Hotel, Kinta Riverfront and Seemsoon Hotel opened their doors to travellers within months of each other!

Thai Style Fried Rice (RM7/USD2.30 for small portion) – With prawns, squid, eggs, onions and stalks of mustard greens; served with a piquant and slightly tangy condiment of chopped garlic and bird’s eye chillies in a sweet-spicy chili sauce.

Thai cuisine has almost always never failed me. Especially in times of dire cravings and turbulent climates. You know what I mean.

This inconspicuous restaurant in Puchong came into the radar not too long ago, when we dropped by Mek-T for some good old Terengganu classics. The former Mek-T, I might add. They have since ceased operations under further notice. What a waste.

Chiang Rai Style Restaurant. Guess the signboard cleared things up explicitly; a northern Thai cuisine specialist within a neighbourhood dominated by Chinese restaurants (Leong Ya Indah, Kajang Sup Pedas and various ‘dai chow’ outlets)? Right on. Read the rest of this entry »

Kong Sai Signature Poached Chicken – The condiments make all the difference

If you have been irritated by the fact that I respond to your e-mail or comment with a generous dose of tardiness lately, I sincerely apologize.

Or you’ve been deprived of the frequent doses of Motormouth’s ramblings, I felt bad too.

Been working my @$$ off the past few weeks, and I foresee no relenting until the fasting month. And that’s another month to go. Even my camera has been stashed away most of the time, only making periodic appearance in instances like this gathering at Kong Sai Restaurant in Paramount Garden last week.

Is this a Museum or a Temple, you asked?

Talk about irony. Just a few days after writing about Hakka Rang Restaurant in Kota Damansara; a Chinese restaurant specializing in Hakka cuisine with a formidable line up of backing from media exposure and fan base, here we were again; dining at Hakka Zhan Restaurant. But this time about 150km down south in the historical town of Melaka, within a short distance away from Pak Putra; the Tandoori & Naan specialist.

Four dishes for 2 pax. And yet still left me hankering for more. I am a natural when it comes to auditioning for an ogre character.
